Hey I've been hearing a lot about these guys recently on the forums and i was wondering what kind of music they play and what are some good songs/albums to get.

Theyre progressive, and fucking awesome, every band member is a virtuoso at their instrumemt.
Get the albums "Images & Words", or if your into a more metal-esque type sound then get "Train of Thought"

Best Metal Band around, in my opinion. My favorite album is Scenes From a Memory.

They play progressive metal. As far as heaviness goes I would say they are on par with old metallica for how "heavy" the music is. The instruments are needlessly complex while still pleasant to listen to, not generally thought of as a speed metal band, but most songs are faster than stuff you normally hear. The vocals are generally soft but with many parts in the vein of old school metal like black sabbath or iron maiden.
Thats a rough description, the easiest way would be to simply listen to them. Dream Theater do not sound like any of the bands I mentioned, and I never said they do.
Anyways, if you were to start off with an album I would get Images and Words (One of their softer albums) or Scenes from a Memory (A concept album with excellent music.)
Individual songs if youre going to download I would go with "The Glass Prison" or "Under A Glass Moon." Just two of my favorites, ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers for songs.

Yeah I found them on Itunes and I've been listening to samples. Sounds like I'm gonna have to check em out.

My favourite albumis probably 'Images and Words'. There are some pretty cool metal songs like 'Pull Me Under' and 'Under a Glass Moon', theres progressive, almost jazzy songs like 'Another Day' and 'Surrounded' and just epic songs like 'Learning to Live' and 'Metropolis'. There is not a bad song on the album.

I don't dig them much.
They just seem like, "Hey let's get as much talent as possible together and play"....without regard for much else. They are good, I will give them that. But overrated IMO. And that is my opinion, not fact. So don't shit yourselves.

If you want some good dream theater songs, that sound heavier, i'd check out In the Name of God, Home, or if you're into instrumentals, Stream of Consciousness.

Images and words first, then if you like the technical side of things, go for scenes from a memory, or if you like the heavier things, go for train of thought.

My favorite albums, and the ones I reccomend, are "Metropolis Pt. 2 - Scenes From A Memory" "Images and Words" "Train Of Thought" and "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" which I just recently got from a friend.

"Train of Thought" is the only release I like from them. They tend to be on the wankery side of things, and place it in front of actual song writing craft.

Images and Words and Awake are two of the best albums I've ever heard.

Attempt to get everything they have released, except "Falling Into Infinity". That album is too commercial sounding and really boring. I would recommend "Images and Words", "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory", and "Six Degrees of Innter Turbulence" the most. Every Dream Theater album is a work of art in my opinion (except FII).

I have train of thought. I fell asleep during the only time I tried to listen to it, but I might give it another try again.

I like them for their talent and variety of sounds. I enjoy the songs Dance of Eternity, Erotomania, and War inside my head. None of those songs sound as if its the same band. This band's main influence was probably from the king of progressive bands, Yes.

Dream Theater was influenced by quite a lot of prog including Yes, Rush, King Crimson, Genesis, ELP, Pink Floyd, Tempest, Marillion and Queensryche.
But they also cite Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Boston, Ozzy and Zeppelin as influences.
