RIP One of the great songwriters of all time
"ONDON (Reuters) - Syd Barrett, a founding member of Pink Floyd, has died aged 60, a source close to the band said on Tuesday.
"I have had it from David (Gilmour) that it was confirmed by the family," said the source, who did not want to be named. "It happened on Friday".
Guitarist David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in 1968, three years after it was formed and shortly before Barrett left the band.
Barrett, a singer, songwriter and guitarist, had lived the life of a recluse for the last 30 years. He had been suffering from diabetes, although it was not immediately clear what caused his death.
The writer of the bulk of Pink Floyd's early music, Barrett had been credited with helping to shape its progressive sound. His increasingly erratic behaviour in the late 1960s has been linked to his experimentation with psychedelic drugs.
Pink Floyd's 1975 track "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", from the album "Wish You Were Here", is widely believed to be a tribute to Barrett.
He was born in Cambridge as Roger Keith Barrett, and acquired the nickname "Syd" when he was 15 years old.
He missed out on Pink Floyd's most successful years in the 1970s, which included the albums "Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here" and "The Wall".
The band has sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide, although internal rifts have kept public performances featuring its main members to a minimum since the 1980s."

Oh Christ here we fucking go.
Everyone! Hop on the Syd Barrett death train, now that he's dead, EVERYONE CAN HAVE A CHANCE TO REALLY SHOW HOW MUCH THEY KNEW HIS MUSIC...
I love Pink Floyd dearly. They are my favorite band period. All vintage of them too, From Piper to Division, I love em all. However, people are going to begin to call Syd 'one of the greatest songwriters of all time', which is an extreme exageration. 'one of the greatest guitar players of all time', which is a slightly smaller stretch than the first one..
Respect his music, respect his legacy, respect his death.
Do not, make it a spectacle.

Shine on You Crazy Diamond.
Roger Waters is what made Pink Floyd, Syd may have started the whole thing, but when Syd left the band, waters took over and defined the band what it is today.

Just shut the fuck up and pay your respects. Pink Floyd would have NEVER happened if Barrett never started it up.
I hate it when people go all crazy on who "made" Pink Floyd. Syd, Waters and Gilmour, Wright and Mason ALL made the band what it is.
BTW, I am seeing Waters this september in Montreal.
Dark Side of the Moon recreated for the first time in 30 years! Plus I am betting he is going to have a tribute to Syd.

I know what you mean, but i don't don't think this will turn into anything big.
Now i want to watch The Wall again.

Why so much anger?
Anyways, I never disregarded Syd, I said he started the group, soon after he left, Waters took over. Whats so hard to understand?

How about you shut the fuck up and stop being such a sheep - \\\'pay your respects\\\' - why? Because of social pressure?
Debating whether or not Pink Floyd would have started up without Syd is deeply idiotic - we are all slaves of cause and effect and we have no powers of time travel from whence to judge. You cannot possibly speculate about alternative paths of past events when you are defined by the chain of events that have preceded now - you are an inhabitant of a system of time and cannot assert anything that would require independence from the said system.
Barrett was deeply overrated, the band did all of their best work without him, his death is mourned the same way as the nice old lady\\\'s next door would be - oh fucking well.
Reigenborn and Avo - my props to you - Gs that knows where the fuck it\'s at. \\\'Respect for the dead\\\' is insincere, hypocritical and dishonest - why does someone dying change who they are? It is patronising to the dead people, disrespectful to who they actually were, to paint them in brighter colours in death.

wow the guy who is trying be different and talk about being a sheep and wutnot, ur a sheep also trying to think differently because there are many who do so and u run along with them. So theres no escaping in being a sheep for anyone really... except me, I do what I feel is right and what is respectful and I am a badass with cornrows in his crotch. This guy I dont know who this guy is, I can call him a doushe if I want just to "be different" but I wont because I know Pink Floyd changed a lot of peoples lives and have much respect. Iv never listened to their music and never really had an urge to but out of respect to someone who changed many lives I do say to rest in peace.

I never liked Syd Barrett's music, nobody should be calling him one of the "greatest songwriters of all time". But I do respect the man himself, as crazy as he was, R.I.P.

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but because I don't know him personally, I'm not that sad about his passing, and he's pretty much been dead for decades anyway.
Pink Floyd would have never gone as far as they did if Barret had stayed with them.
Also, Shine On You Crazy Diamond is an awesome song, my second favorite by them, right after Have a Cigar.

I'm not much of fan of Syd Barrett's work. The early pink floyd does not interest me at all, but I think Syd Barrett was a very interesting indvidual. He's definetly someone to remember.

blah blah blah.
No, I arrive at my conclusions through analysis and thought, not through blindly imitating others - a sheep only conforms as it follows the shepherd, if I have the same views as others that is not because I copy them, but through collective logical realisation.
Yes, this is me \'thinking I\'m right\', but in order to believe something you HAVE to think it\'s true, or else you wouldn\'t believe it!. When people speak of \'respect for opinions\', as though all views are equally valid, they are contradicting themselves, I\'ll change any view in light of new evidence, but the opinions of others, in themselves, and lacking such evidence, are of no relevance. To debate about things implies there are answers to be found, facts.
The point is to at least try and be an individual, there is a big difference between actually forming your own views about the world, even if they (by chance) match others, and blindly mimicking and accepting social pressure as a guide to your life.
People are scared of the thought of their own freedom, it implies such terrible responsibility, but it\'s also wonderfully liberating - even if we\'re not truly free it\'s a good assumption to live life by. There are no set answers, there are no rules, there are no traditions to conform to, we are free to invent the answers, to do as we wish. Life in itself is meaningless, it is up to us to give it a meaning: this is existentialism.

JEEZ!!!! How can you say that they suck?!?!? I'm shocked! I've grown to completely respect their music because this band has persuaded new rock and psychadelic bands to make something that wasn't well known back in the 70s. I may not want to listen to much of Pink Floyd's music because it's emotionally overwhelming for me. But they are extremely good and deserve more credit. Why do you go back and listen to "Wish You Were Here," and think about what their intentions were of making this song great. Maybe you'd think twice about their talent.
