Act of War...? Definitely not the best, at all...

Probably the most well done strategy game is either one of the Civilizations or Starcraft... Starcraft especially for the time it came out, and it's persistence (still waiting for Starcraft 2 goddamnit!)

Age of Empires was the game that really got me into RTS games, god was that game good... Age of Empires II is also a masterpiece

red alert 2 was plain fun, total annihlation was great, i haven't played that many contemporary rts games unfortunately

I don't play a lot of strategy, but I got into them with Age of Empires II. I then got into some Command and Conquer RTS games (I spend years playing Renegade, however; it was my favorite game for a long while. It made me hate EA for stopping service, but it just goes to show how a community can improve so much on a game that the developer gave up on.) but didn't play them a whole lot.

I have a hard time playing RTS, as I have trouble juggling resources, individual units, upgrades, building units; I have a one-track mind and that's why I love missions involving a group of units and no base to worry about.

I always put Sudden Strike 2 up there, but now I feel it is a toss up between Rome Total War or Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War.

you gotta love the nuking and the weather storming.

oh and Allied dolphines. you can't leave em out, cus we all know dolphines fight for the forces of good.

The Civilization series is the best turn based strategy game by far. Civ 4 is the current one, and it's the type of game that can be fun for hours at a time.

I liked that game Savage where it mixed RTS and FPS toghether, don't think it took off that well though. You can grab the demo and play two maps, usually servers are quite populated. Link (http://www.s2games.com/savage/)
