sorry, but you're out of luck. the 2.71 firmware psp can not play emulators and can not be downgraded at the moment. give it about a couple of months and the homebrew community will figure a way to correct this issue.

You need to downgrade to run an emulator. Each update makes it so you cant use roms...so you need to find a downgrader and go to 1.00 or 1.5, then your games should work.

A few weeks or months after an update, a hacker makes a program that can take away the updates for your psp, downgrading it to an older update. You will find these on various websites and forums, you just have to search for a psp 2.71 downgrader. Chances are, there isnt one for 2.71 yet, so you will have to wait until someone creates it.

Currently there is no available downgrader for 2.7
I've been looking for a downgrader for 2.6 and all I can find is one where you need GTA Liberty City Stories to make it work. I'm growing impatient.

They won't fuck up your PSP if you know what you're doing. I downgraded from 2.0 to 1.5 awhile ago without any problems.
And chances are that there won't be an emulator for 2.5 and on. With each new firmware release, Sony has made it increasingly more difficult for homebrewers to make emulators on newer versions of the PSP.

yeap, like PhyuckYu stated, it's getting harder everytime. Sony is not worried about emulators and other roms being played on the PSP. what they're truely worried about is hackers one day being able to rip PSP roms and play them for free on the PSP through the memory card. i briefly read somewhere that claimed it was possible.
well anyway, to those who plan on getting a PSP for emulation/hacks, you can find some 1.5 firmware PSP on ebay. the new ones at the store are all 2.7 or 2.71 which doesn't have anything available for it right now.

Really if you you want Emulation and Roms, don't bother with the PSP, buy something that was designed to do it, get a GP2X. I'm amazed at the number of people whining about how hard it is to hack the £200 Sony when they could get all the need for £120 from Gamepark Holdings, and none of you seems to care. I'm coming over all freak fanboy, but it's so bleeding obvious. Get a PSP for PS2 ports and UMD films not playing ripped movies and emulation.

you've already mention about the GP2X several times. i know this GP2X is an undiscovered gem of a handheld, but it's the PSP we're talking about here, not the GP2X. a lot of us already own a PSP so we might as well make the best out of it.
if there was a thread started about the GP2X, then you'll be the perfect person to get advice from and ask. maybe you should start a thread about the GP2X advantage over the PSP for emu/hacks just to get your point across once and for all.

Good point, I'll do that when I get home from work.

I picked up a used version on Amazon for $25.00 bucks and it works perfectly, also you don't actually touch your firmware so theres no chance of you hurting your PSP. (GTA is good too, least it wasn't a bad game!)

If you want to play emulators/roms, and rip PSP roms and play those too --- you'll have to get a downgradeable psp (2.60 and lower). If you bought your psp from a place that covers it with a warranty (EB, toys r us, etc.) there's a way you COULD trick them into getting a better version.
What you do is put clear tape over the laser with barely enough so one can't see that you put it on. Now whenever you try to use a umd it'll have a disc read error as long as the tape remains on it. Now bring it to an EB games and say it's not reading discs and it suddenly started happening, they'll test it and let you pick anyone you want out of the store (this can work in any other store you bought it in). If it doesn't work (if the clerk heard of thist rick before), you can take the tape back off the laser and it'll work again.

Today I successfully downgraded from 2.6 to 1.5 (using the GTA method), installed the newest version of devhook and have been playing the new tekken game all day!
This is how I downgraded from 2.6 to 1.5!
WARNING, THIS COULD FUCK UP YOUR PSP, DON'T BLAME ME IF IT DOES, USE THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK!
You will need the following:
1.) A PSP (Apparently you wont be able to do this if you don’t have one of these)
2.) Grand Theft Audio Liberty City Stories (No other known game will enable you to downgrade, you will also need to have played and saved the game)
3.) Devhook + 2.5 & 2.6 updates, eLoader, 2.5/2.6 downgrade kit and PSP ISO Compressor 1.1 (optional but well worth it). I have zipped all the above and uploaded it to rapidshare, download it by clicking here (http://rapidshare.de/files/25847920/PSP_DOWNGRADER.zip.html) (26MB)
Step 1
When you have downloaded and extracted the zip file there will be two folders, one called “PSP DOWNGRADE” and the other called “PSP ISO Compresser v1.1”. The “PSP DOWNGRADE” folder is the only one you need to worry about for now. When you open the “PSP DOWNGRADE” folder there will be four folders:
dh
DOWNDATER
ISO
PSP
Plug your PSP into your computer using the USB cable, you will see your PSP is made up of two folders, one called PSP and the other called MS_ROOT (or something like that). Copy and paste the dh, DOWNDATER and ISO folders to the root of your PSP (I don’t mean into the MS_ROOT folder, I mean upload the 3 folders so they are next to the PSP and MS_ROOT folders).
Step 2
Open the PSP folder that came with the download and you will notice 2 more folders inside, GAME and SAVEDATA. Open the PSP folder on your PSP and you will notice there will be the same 2 folders (as well as a few other folders). You have to copy the data inside the GAME and SAVEDATA folders from the download and paste them into the GAME and SAVEDATA folders on your PSP. Before copying the data from the GAME folder in your download to the GAME folder in your PSP, you need to make an alteration. In the GAME folder included in your download there are 6 folders, two of which are called “DOWNDATERTEST 2.50” & “DOWNDATERTEST 2.60”. If your PSP is a 2.6 then rename the “DOWNDATERTEST 2.60” folder so it just says “DOWNDATERTEST” and delete the “DOWNDATERTEST 2.50” folder, do the opposite if your PSP is a 2.5. Now you can copy the data to your PSP.
Step 3
After copying the files from the SAVEDATA folder in the download to the SAVEDATA folder in your PSP you will need to look for the folder in the SAVEDATA on your PSP that contains the saved game data for GTA liberty City, the folders will not be named, they are just loads of numbers, so you will have to go through them all until you find the GTA folder, you will know when you find it cos there will be a screenshot of the game. When you find the GTA saved game folder cut and paste it onto your desktop (cut & paste, not copy and paste!). Then cut and paste it back in! The reason for this is because the GTA saved data folder needs to be newer that the 3 folders for eLoader.
Step 4
Now onto the risky bit! Start your PSP and insert and run GTA Liberty City, I should start normally, when loaded press start, then go to game, then load game, you will see a list of all your saved games and in that list will be the eLoader icon, open it just like you would open a GTA saved game file! eLoader will now start, in the left column the DOWNGRADE TEST should be listed, open it! Your PSP screen will go black for a minute or two, it might take a bit longer, You should attach the AC adaptor before doing this so the battery does not run out. You will notice that when on the black screen the light for your memory stick will be flashing, this is because your PSP is using the files on your memory stick to downgrade to 1.5. So if your memory stick light is still flashing then it is still doing it. After it has downgraded, your PSP will restart and you will get a warning message, I can’t actually remember what the message was, it was about the language files being corrupt I think, anyways there is an option to press circle and repair them, obviously do this! After they have been repaired you will have to select your language, time zone, enter your name and what not. After this you will get another message saying that your PSP is unable to read the disc. This is because you will still have the GTA UMD in your PSP, eject the disk and the message will go away. Now check your system settings to make sure you have been downgraded to 1.5.
Step 5
You can, if you want, delete the “DOWNGRADE” folder from the root of your PSP and also delete the DOWNDATERTEST folder and the cfg, pbp and tga files from the GAME folder as you wont be needing these anymore. Also the three folders you copied to the SAVEDATA folder can go as well, you wont be needing them either. The rest of the files from the download have to stay on your PSP as they are the devhook files (which includes the 2.5 & 2.6 update). Now all you have to do is copy your ISO games to the ISO folder, however it is recommended that you compress your ISO files to CSO files using the ISO compressor (can be found in the PSP ISO Compresser v1.1 folder) and upload the CSO files to the ISO folder instead, this will save space on your memory stick!
Playing games
When you have compressed and copied your CSO games into your PSP’s ISO folder start your PSP and go to the game icon, make sure you have a UMD game in your PSP, it does not matter what game it is as your not going to play, you just need a game in your PSP in order to play your downloaded games through devhook. On the game menu scroll to the memory stick option at the bottom, on the memory stick are 4 files, 2 of which your PSP will say are corrupt, however you only need one of the four files, but keep the other three, don’t delete them! At the bottom of the list should be the devhook launcher. Open this and devhook will start. Once started press circle (as instructed on screen) then on the menu press “select UMD”, all the ISO and CSO games you have in your PSP’s ISO folder will display, select the game you want to play and press start. You PSP will restart and the emulator will start. The emulator looks just like your normal PSP start up screen except the X button might be the button used to select stuff instead of the circle button. Go to the game icon and scroll down to the UMD icon, with any look the UMD icon will be the ISO game you selected and not the game you have in your PSP! Open the game and it should start up as normal, when you want to quit the game press the home button, then press and hold the R1 and L1 buttons and the up button then press yes to quite the game by selecting the x button. Keep holding down the R1, L1 and up button and you should return to your normal PSP start-up screen, you can test this by seeing if the circle button is the button used to select stuff, if it isn’t then the emulator is still running, go back into your game and press the home button and try as before to quit!
And that’s it, don’t ask me where to get the ISO games, if you don’t know that then you should be attempting this!

Great tutorial, that's the method I used. Also there is apparently an official downgrader for older machines that updated to 2.1-6.
http://pspupdates.qj.net/ has the information in their archives / a forum post on it.
Also be careful, newer PSP's have a different motherboard in it that may result in a broken PSP (TA-082). To check if you have this version check out this (http://www.modchipstore.com/support/images/ta82spot.jpg) link.
