How viable does that sound?

I'm going to sell my '01 GMC Jimmy, although it doesn't get horrible gas mileage, like 21hwy 19 city, I'm 17, make $10.00 an hour, other bills, not enough extra money.

I'm waiting until I'm 18 for my motorcycle license due to having to wait 6 months to recieve your motorcycle license in pa if under 18. What I intend on doing is selling my Jimmy for around $5,000, buying a decent 90's Honda, Acura, anything with 28+ MPG and also buying a road legal dirt bike.

Does anyone have experience with a road legal dirt bike? Do you suggest certain models? Should I just stay away from the subject in general?

I don't believe I would use it to go on highways much, mostly through a small country town, back roads, etc.

Why dont you just get ur license...I dont follow your logic here. Youd have to wait 6 months to get the license...but you can drive with a permit until then. So you want to wait 2 year instead of 6 months? OOOOOOOOK...anywho.

Dont you need a motorcycle license for anything over 50cc anyway. So you would need a license for a on/off bike anyway.

Get applying for that permit....

I called the DMV, I CANNOT drive it without an individual who is licensed and over 21 while having a permit. I also cannot have someone driving with me on the bike while having a permit(even if that person is over 21 and has a motorcycle license).

It seems to me it's basically telling you to do a MSF course if you're under 18. If I'm over 18 I can get my permit and a few days later I can get my license, if I get my permit tomorrow, I'll have to wait 2 months to get my license.
That's confusing, no?

Getting a permit does nothing for me

I'll be 18 in a couple months, not big deal anyway.

Let's get back on topic, what do those who have used or have a friend who used think of street legal dirt bikes??

You wont be able to drive it on the street without a motorcycle license anyway...so why are you asking?

I called the DMV, I CANNOT drive it without an individual who is licensed and over 21 while having a permit. I also cannot have someone driving with me on the bike while having a permit(even if that person is over 21 and has a motorcycle license).

Yea that makes no sense. You cant drive it without someone who is 21 and license....but you cannot have someone with you while u have a permit???

I shouldn't have said anything at all about license, thanks for trying to help but I already knew everything about the license deal, I just wanted to know peoples opinions on street legal dirt bikes.

The 28+MPG was me saying I would trade my suv in for a car that got 28+ MPG and I would get a street legal dirtbike with that money and get even better mileage.

Just want to know if anyone here has any experience with how they handle on the road, some good bikes that are already street legal or a good bike to convert to street legal.

Dirtbikes can handle fine on the road, have you ever heard of the Super Motard series? It's basically a track that switches from dirt to asphalt. I drive my dirtbike on-road to find good off-road spots, and it handles just fine, can go fast enough for my needs, and gets an assload of miles off a 1.74 gallon tank. My only worry is bad drivers and the fact that many dirtbikes aren't key ignition, they just have a switch to allow fuel to the carb. Anybody could walk up and start it and own a dirtbike for free.

DR-Z 350
DR-Z 400 (newer and more expensive)

the entire XR line are always good. id suggest an XR 400 for a beginner, maybe a 250 if youre a beginner not riding on the highway.

you could even look into the TT-R or WR line from Yamaha.
