I think it's a very good thing. It insane here in Britain when people say they passed with a grade E. An E may be a pass, but it's not worth anything to anyone.

Yea, I agree with you both. Even if your not planning on going to college or anything after high school, you should still try to do the best you can while in school.

When you say not helping anything, are you saying more people failed? In a way I could see that as a good thing, it weeds out more idiots from getting their diploma, and in the long run I would think that generally people would start aiming for the higher grade to pass.

I forget the reason why it was brought back. I think it was because parents were complaining and they wanted less students to fail. I don't know why though. I had a really good argument to keep the D as passing, but I forgot it.

Yup. I knew alot of kids back in high school who only did the bare minimum just to pass. As long as they passed, they didn't care what they got. Making it harder to pass only makes the uneducated stay in high school and let the educated pass. If a person is really trying hard in a class and is still not getting it, there are plenty of things that person could do.

It may not seem to be working right away but in the long run, it does help.

It's good... in most subjects the work is easy and people just try hard enough to get the D. Now people can just try hard enough to get a C. Then the average GPA for the country will go up and everyone is less dumb...

I disagree. There are actually a fair ammount of people who don't care so much for school and don't try hard, but when it comes down to it they still really want to pass. If you raise the standard, the first few groups who are used to the old standard will have problems and more will fail, but when people get used to the new standard, they will work for it.

I'll break the dumbasses down for you:

Super-idiots: These guys know they're going to fail and don't care.

Idiots: These guys know they're gonna fail, but are smart enough to care.

Below average: These guys pass by the skin of their teeth. These are the ones who would fail if the D grade was dropped.

Viceroy, the people who pass by the skin of their teeth generally DO care about passing, they are just morons. They put shit off until the VERY last minute than half ass it when they panic about failing, then barely pull it off.

If that's the case why don't we drop Bs, Cs and Ds and just say: "You either submit an A grade piece of work, or you fail." That way the average will be very high.

Come on, there's always gonna be dumbasses who aren't gonna improve, no matter what happens to the curriculum. The only way dropping the D grade is good, is that when you say "I passed Science", people know it was with an A, B, or C grade. However, if fewer people pass then then it makes the whole system look bad.

I see your point Viceroy, and actually I think you don't quite see mine. Passing with a D means you can get by with only getting 60% of the work done, which seems rather rediculous to me. I truly don't care about letter grades, it comes down to percents. I honestly can't think of a job right now where you can get by on 60%. People have been putting school off to much, they need a massive slap in the face to get them going.

As of right now, this is how is goes:

A - Excellent

B - Good

C - Average

D - Below Average

F - Failure

Now, don't you thing that if D would become failure, that more people would strive for that C just as they are, right now, striving for the D? I knew this one kid in high school who only did enough work to get a D. He actually had a very high IQ and really did know how to do the work. He just didn't care. As long as he got a D, he was fine. Now, don't you think that having to get a C to pass would make more people try harder? How do we expect people to get an education when they refuse to do the work? If they want to pass, they will have to do more work to get that C. If they don't care if they pass or not, then this won't effect them. If they want to pass but really don't understand the work, they could get help from the teacher or other students.

What do you mean? If a person studies and gets almost every answer on the test right, don't you think he/she deserves an A? That person may not be a genius but they still deserve to get an A.

What studies? And who would these dropouts be? They would be people who do not care about school. Because dropping out is the easy way out. Those who really want to get good grades, no matter how low their grades are, will not drop out. They will get extra help if needed but they will not drop out.

I'm talking about the stigma of a C. In a bell shaped curve overall most people will score close to the middle, the average, the C grade. But, in this overly competitive day and age we live in, a C might as well be an F.

I say that if a student works their butt off an earns an A on a test or in a class, then they deserve the grade. But if every kid in the class/school/state is getting an A (or an F), then something is wrong.

Exactly. It is my opinion that it is too easy to get an A. That has actually hurt me. I have had several classes where I never even go to the damn lecture, I march into the final and get an A... makes me loose the will to go to lectures....

......although, that said, there are still tons of people who drop out. Maybe there is just a large population of incredibly stupid people? It just seems to me that even if the class is hard, if the person is studying hard every day, there should be NO reason they should fail unless they have a learning disability.

If the person really cared about their grade and was still having trouble in the class, then they should go to the teacher for help or at least other students who know what they are doing. If they care and are failing but do not seek help, then they obviously don't care that much and should fail.
