I thought this might be a good idea, to create a list of PC games that are older but still worthy of a place on your hard drive. These games are also great if you don't have the best video card or the hugest hard drive, since they are generally small and easy to run.
Some obvious ones:
Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom
Duke Nukem 3d
Sim City 2000
Quake 1, 2, 3
Half-Life
Max Payne
Jedi Knight 1 + 2
Older ones:
Duke Nukem 1, 2, 3
Jazz Jackrabbit
Prince of Persia
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
EDIT: Starcraft, Warcraft II, Diablo 2 (duh)

The Monkey Island series.
Grim Fandango.
Both good point and click games, although the SCUMM engine took a while to get used to after The Curse of Monkey Island.

Exactly what I was going to say.
There are rumors going around the Tim Burton might make a Grim Fandango film.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
I bought Allied Assault: Deluxe a while ago and it turns out it doesn't work on my four year old desktop computer because it's incompatible with my video card. And yet, I can play Half Life 2 on it fine.
Oh, well. It was only £5, so it's not like it's going to devalue any more before I get a new computer. I've been saying I'm getting a new computer since November.
I could install it on my laptop, but I can't be bothered swapping the mouse from my desktop to the laptop and back again.

Going to add Tomb Raider II into this. Why? Because it outperformed the original, III, IV, and Chronicles and even Legend. Giving birth to a major female heroine who you could actually see most of the game (note: trying to exclude Samus, who was in a suit during almost all of her series). It was a great platformer and action game and produced countless spawns (starring both female and male characters, many of which failed to be as good and productive as Tomb Raider II).
Many of the ones I would've added were said though...
But I'm going to repeat Starcraft anyway, because it owned that much. Not even the actual playing of the game, but the UMS games were amazing.

Command and Conquer: Renegade. EA bought Westwood and stopped supporting it, so the community released a homemade anti-cheat (Renguard) and patch (CP1). It's neat how game communities have dedication to a game.
Rollercoaster Tycoon 1/2. Got addicted to the original and it totally took over my life.
Half-life, especially for the mods. Counter-strike, Sven Co-op, The Specialists, and so many more.
The C&C RTS games. Nearly the only RTS games I ever played (except for Starcraft [barely] and AOE 2/3).
