Ok guys, I'm looking to buy a soccer game in the next few days and Blockbuster doesn't have shit for soccer games around me. The games I know about are Winning Eleven (not sure which number is the newest), Pro Evolution (same), and whatever EAs newest game is.

Love one of these titles? Did I miss one? Here's your chance to prove to me which game I should pick up. Screenshots, videos, reviews are a bonus here of course.

Thanks in advance guys.

Pro EVo and Fifa are the main ones, or play Sensible Soccer (the new one) if you want something different. :D

Will do, I rented 8 before the world cup and liked it. Nice and hard, unlike EA sports's soccer games. Sucked though cause the game didn't come with instructions so I'm sure there was stuff I was missing. I couldn't do shit on free kicks for instance. Thanks for the advice.

I disagree. Some are hard but others are easy to slot in after practice and with the optional curl. Using someone like Henry also makes it easier.

All instructions can be found by pausing a game and going down to the commands tab.

Alternatively read the manual.

go to pesfan.com to see all set of moves and tricks that certain players can do. there are hundreds of them (theyre not all listed on pesmoves.com).

this game takes a lot of practice (in training mode) which really really helps.

and the best thing is, you can edit the teams! so since we9 covers the 2005-2006 season, you can edit the relegated teams, and replace it with the teams from the previous division, thus youll have the 2006-2007 teams with the correct rosters (with a little editing)

and theres master league mode, which is a simulation or soccer rpg if you will, where you can buy new players, get relegated, win trophies, set records. players will gain experience everytime you put them on the field. your players will age as the seasons progresses (which would affect their performance, by decreasing their stats), but the computer generates random players though.

and o yea, NO GOALS ARE THE SAME, thanks to the realism and realisitic physics the game has.

well that is all :) im sure youll figure how amazing the game is once you play it :)

and its very different from Winning eleven 8

So yeah, I finally bought it last night. Took me fooooooreeeevvveeerrrrr. I went to ebgames, Target, compUSA, Circuit City, nothing. Finally found it behind some other games at Best Buy, was very lucky.

So I did a lot of the training challenges, got me pretty familiar with the controls. Then stayed up until 2:30 playing some games. This game will get me addicted...no doubt.

I scored on a free kick from almost where you take the corner kick from. I got fouled there and tried to bend the hell out of one and score. It hit some dude on the other team (Real Madrid) in the face and went in the goal, knocked him on his ass. It was totally hilarious.

I concur. It's the same thing with NHL or MLB, all the faceoffs and different people to come at bat. And soccer (footy) is the only sport that you know around how long the match will be. 90 minutes + a few a minutes of stoppage time. (Unless it goes to extra time)

Also, I have FIFA 2006 (EA), should I really make the change to WE9?

So I start playing WE9 last night, and I was sucking it up!!! Every pass was intercepted, every shot either missed the goal all together or hit the post. And they moved through my defense like it was swiss cheese. I started a season as arsenal. Tied my first game and beat Man U (red), all 2 nights ago. So then I start last night and lose three straight games. Friggin sucking it up. What's the strategy on defense? Gimme some help here guys!

Change the difficulty or go in training mode and practice....I was shit at it once I started playing it, you get better at it. Being honest, all i've done on my game is make a custom team where every player has top shooting, accuracy etc. I score 40 yard goals alot :p I haven't got round to the master league or anything

Why we are on it, is there anyway to turn the offside rule on/off and is there anyway to change referee strictness??

I don't know what the hell you're talking about. Hockey is exactly 60 minutes of play with some games going into overtime/shootout. And no where in hockey do you have to pause and "make plays." Besides, there are plenty of stoppages in football (not American).

u beat man utd with arsenal? yea boy!!!

you know the formation settings before you start the match?

study it.... change your formations and choose which suits you well
then tell your defense what to do from the menu...

have your defense or dmfs cover an area OR man mark a cruicial opponent

go to pesfan.com for tips etc.... they have vids too

everything on the formation menu is important

and you have to study the position of your strikers, so you would know how well they would shoot, when in a bad position.

No it's not exactly 60 minutes, when the puck get's frozen or iced or out of play or even when there's a fight the clock stops. So if that fight lastes 2-3 minutes that makes the game more then 60 minutes. In footy, when there's a goal or it goes out of bounds, the time continues, but at the end they at that time lost to the game.

Ok, arsenalfan, gotta question for you. I was playing last night, doing pretty good, dropped the difficulty down one level just to get more comfortable on defense. And I was switching between trying to pass a lot to get open shots or one-on-one runs at the goal and sprinting down the sideline and centering the ball in, for a header. I started getting really good at getting the centering pass right on henry or reyes and they literally headed it over the bar every time, I never scored on a header. Am I doing something wrong when I'm hitting square or is it just hard as shit to score on a header?

Canty

It's much rarer on the current version to score headers. Nothing you can really do about it but they do go in every so often.

yea you hit square to shoot with a header, but also press R2 for accuracy. R2 adds accuracy but *somestimes* at the cost of power.

when pressing R2, your player will kick using their side foot, and when heading, sometimes they would aim at the corner OR they would head it towards the ground so hard, that it will bounce back into the air, thus tricking the keeper.

when doing crosses, use R2 to slightly move your players (if theyre inside the box) but use super cancel (R1+R2) to have them run towards the ball (if theyre out of position) and maybe they might even do a diving header.

always use R2 when shooting everytime youre inside the box.

now for crossing: there are three types of crosses in the game

Press:
Circle Once- and your player will perform a far cross (which will end up near the goal, but on the other side, which would leave the keeper confused)
Circle Twice- Medium Cross (ends up somewhere near the center circle in the box)
Circle Three Times - Low Cross (its very different from pressing X, it will send the ball low and fast)

and o yea, make sure your right footed players play on the right side, and left on the left side (its important to keep in mind). make sure your RMFs and LMFs have good passing accuracy and speed (can be seen in their stats), so their crosses will be accurate.

for the wingers (wing backs) the best wingers are the once with high stamina, speed, teamwork and passes. Wingers are helpful when your Side Midfielders are in trouble and are surrounded near the touch line (the "out* line), they would run up to your troubled midfielder so you can safely pass the ball to him, so he could continue his run towards the other end to cross the ball.

for AMFs, you would want someone with the "Middle Shooting (special ability) star* such as gerrard, rooney, joe cole etc, or anyone with High shooting power stats (85-90). these players can shoot from 35 yards.

I hope im making sense because it is pretty late here :) :sleeping2

o yea, always shoot, its a game, so the more you shoot, the more chances youll score.

this game is adicting isnt it hehehe

I was a big fan of EA since FIFA 96' on SNES and bought most titles, but I didn't care for the online one I got a few years ago. I'll check this one out.

So, I guess that means you can relegate half of Serie A when the courts are done with them?

6? I thought there was only 5, damn I'm slipping. I guess I'll just keep playing and try to get the hang of things. It pisses me off that everyone on the other team is faster then all of my players, even if I have the higher speed rating...doesn't make sense.

When you say you started a season do you mean Master League or just a normal season?

AsHopeDies
07-31-2006, 11:53 AM
I played a normal season in the English league, as Arsenal. I bought the game, was playing on 3 stars (the default) and was doing pretty good. Then I started doing really shitty. So I was reading online about how to get good at the game and I saw somewhere to bump it down to 2 stars to get used to everything and then bump it back up. I can't help but feel like that fucked me, because I was better at 3 before I bumped it down then I am now. But at the same time, I'm either drawing or losing 2 or 3 to 1. So it's a lot of fun. I hate games where you play them 4 or 5 times and you never lose again. I was just wondering if there are any tips about playing defense or how to get around the fact that you are always slower then the computer. I'll admit I know/do shit about the formations.

*oh yeah, before I switched I won a few games on 3 stars. But since going back I've only won one. I beat the netherlands 3-1. 2 of my goals and they had an own goal, which was pretty funny.

Quiet_Riot
07-31-2006, 12:11 PM

When I first started my ML I was awful at 3*. I just kept at it and I gradually worked out in my head how to get a shot on goal. I did this through to ^* and although I lose quite a few on friendly matches it is so much fun getting about 5 shots on goal in half an hour for some reason. It's all about just trying to find a gap and then playing a through ball to a striker. Just keep passing the ball and btw use manual tactics. I use:

X - Centre Attack
/\ - Offside
O - Counter Attack

AsHopeDies
08-01-2006, 12:29 AM
The game seems funner to me at 5*. That's kinda weird. I just beat Austria in penalties with England. It went to 10 shots! My keeper made one great save in regular time and theirs made 2, low scoring chances for both sides...was very cool. A lot like a real game.

In my opinion, 5 stars is harder than 6. In 5 they go all out, do whatever it takes, whereas in 6, they use cunning tactics, and actually play proper football; long balls, 1-2's, long shots etc.

Trust me, as soon as you get enough points, buy 6 stars and play, you'll never go back.

change your formation, find one that suits you well

my favorite formation is 4-2-3-1

4 defedners
2 midfield defenders
3 attacking midfield
1 striker

Strategy:
Counter Attack - Auto
Zone Press - L2
Center Attack OR Opposite Side Attack - Auto (depends on enemies formation in the center)
Offside Trap - Auto

I set my two center backs a few inches from the center circle in the penalty area, so my offside trap works like a charm.

Defensive/Attacking Setting:
Offside Trap: A
Counter Attack : A
Zone Press : B
Back Line : A

4-2-3-1 is great for defense AND offence

for offense youll end up using the AIR through pass (L1 + Triangle)and super cancel a lot, but once you master it, it works like a charm.

I have ONE center back Man Marking the Enemy in the penalty box(Aggresive)

The Wingers Man Mark midfielders on the side (Normal)

One Defensive Midfield Covering the area.

and one Attacking Midfield (Steven Gerrard) play as defence and offense.

heres my formation

----------Goalie------------ Petr Cech

--------|_MM__o_|-------- Campbell with Heitinga or Gilbert
----/-----------------\----
---MM----------------MM-- Kolo Toure with Ashely Cole or Eboue w/ Clichy
--/--------------------\---
---------\-------/---------
----------o-----CV-------- Mathieu with Essien or Flamini with Gilberto
----------|-----|----------

--------Halfway-Line-------

----|------------------|---
----o------------------o--- Joe Cole (far left) and Reyes or Van Persie(right)
----|--------|---------|---
-------------O------------- Gerrard (offense + defense)
-------------|-------------

-------------O------------- Striker : Henry or Rooney (getting adriano later)

-------Enemy-Goalie--------

you have to learn the settings in the formation setup. theyre all helpful and are cruicial espeicllay when playing in 6 stars.

also dont forget to change players so they'll be available for your next game and get xp (make sure to sub 12 minutes before the round ends or your subbed player wont gain any experience).

you dont want to put an important player on the pitch UNLESS you have to (because hes cruicial to the game) or else he will get very tired and wont be able to play a lot of games in the coming fixtures, and also if your players are really fatigued, they are prone to injury, so always check your calendar to see which teams are weak or strong.

if your facing a weak team, try putting average players, or if youre really good, put one good striker and score lots of goals so you can sub the weaker players after half time, so they can gain xp and grow.

try to also get to know which players in your team are good at passing and free kicks.

i have henry for short free kicks because he can bend the ball alot.

BUT since he has very low shot power, i have Rooney, Gerrard or Van Persie taking long free kicks (for passing or scoring). long free kicks are in the distance between 35-30

try understanding the players movement, and in which position a certain player can clear the ball or shoot.

Henry for instance, can shoot with both his left and right foot, and can even do a turn around shot, BUT players like Ronaldo or Nistlerooy cant

yea i play this game a lot when i ahve nothing better to do at home :squint:

Thanks a ton for the help man, I'm starting to get the formations and stuff down. I'm not 100% comfortable with all of the settings yet though. I dunno if I just don't know enough about soccer or this game, but I know how to do everything you said except were you were saying that you have one defender doing this and one midfielder doing that...I don't know how to set that shit up, I'll figure it out though.

I think my main problem with the master league is that I am creating a new team and using the default players and the lowest starting money points. I read on pesfan.com that that was very challenging and the 'real' way to do the master league, so I'm giving it a shot. Very difficult to do on 6* cause the default players suck ASS!

So I wasn't sure if I sucked or not so I started an England League with Arsenal on 6* and won the first game 3-1. So I'm thinking a lot of my troubles have to do with the fact that my default players suck ass.

Arsenalfan, PM me or something and maybe we can set up an online game, that should be fun.

Thanks a ton for the help man, I'm starting to get the formations and stuff down. I'm not 100% comfortable with all of the settings yet though. to set your players to Man Mark an opponent or cover an area, in the formations setting, go to Individual

and choose a player to change his Defensiveness and offensiveness

There are two types of man Marking : Normal and Aggresive

Normal sets your defender to only man mark when defending

aggressive sets your defender to ALWAYS stick to an opponent (do this when the oppoenents are really close to your defenders)

use normal when the enemy is really far away

Covering (mostly used for defensive midfielders) covers an area that is not guarded by any one of your defenders

Mark Zone which is default (ZN)
sets your players to stay in the area that they are assigned to, and wait for the ball to come to them, and they mark any opponent that comes into field of view.

well Mark zone is hard to explain, but only set it to your attacking players (strikers and Attacking midfielders)

and dont always use every defender to chase an opponent. i did that once with three of my defenders and i didnt even realize that no one is backing up my keeper.

and also set arrows for your players (individual -> attack) so they will go to the assigned area when attacking or defending.

check out the lines in my ugly, hopefully understandable diagram.

the lines and slashes that are attached to the "o"s that points towards your goal indicates where the players go when defending, while the opposite tells where they have to go when attacking.

also use the radar to see if your striker is open to any long passes, and learn to use the air through pass L1+ Triangle.

so to sum it up:

find best formation that suits you
practice long passes ( and only use O (circle) for crosses) and timing passes.

dont change your formation often, i only stick with my 4-2-3-1

stick with a formation, then if it suits you well, play around wtih the settings in the formation setup.

then after that, all you have to do after each game in master league is change your players, because your formation settings are saved

o yea never use Square to clear a ball, use L1 + circle instead to send the ball to the half way line.

clearing with square sometimes ends up in an out or a corner kick in favor of the opposing team

dont always run with R1, use R2 for sprinting with a better control of the ball.

use the feint shot often too, its not just used to fool opponents, but also if you want to make really quick turns.

heres a video of how to perform special moves in the game:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4390720118408354775&q=pes5&pl=true

its in spanish heh

but dont count on tricks so much.

i only do stepovers with longbridge, roulette and shot feint sometimes
