Wow. I'm very ignorant when it comes to sports, so, somebody fill me in...what ended up happening to this guy? Did he live? That looked like some major arterial spurting going on there.

Here's a quote that was given to me 20 minutes ago, which led me to do a search on Clint Malarchuk via google, which is how I found this thread eventually:

March 22, 1989. Clint Malarchuk took a
hockey skate to the throat and got a 6 inch opening to his carotid. He
still managed to skate off the ice. The announcers are like "My God, take
the camera off." and Sabres fans were fainting due to sheer fright as blood
gushed through the cut & Clint coughed up pools of blood. He required 300
stitches, but was back out on the ice in 3 weeks. It was beca

Yea, he lived, he had some problems dealing with it afterwards tho. He played in the NHL for a bit, then went to the "Minor League" of hockey for a while, now he is a goalie coach for the Florida Panthers

I saw that on Sportscenter, it's so gross. I can't believe he lived. Wow.

its ridiculous. it kidna worries me as to why the refs seem to be more concerned with scuffling players and a dude whos on all fours, over a pool of blood....and his teamates...i understand that this was around the time when aids was first becoming known, but hell, the guy is spurting blood from his throat and no teammate or ref even helps him immediately.

My buddies site has it. Here are the forums. I am not going to direct link it because it will kill his bandwidth. It is in the "general hockey clips" section.

I just saw the footage of his accident last night and I found out that he used to be a goalie for the Gulls (the "Minor League" hockey team), my absolute favorite hockey team. There was always talk at the games about how there was something "different" about this goalie, but no one ever actually said what it was. It's so amazing to see what happened to this man and then think that I was lucky enough to see him play again after his accident.

Do you know if he's still a goalie coach for the Panthers?

Take care everyone.....*Patchy*
