This was a long time ago - the reporter is John Stossel (now I think co-anchor of 20/20, right?), wrestler is David Shultz.

Stossel sued Shultz (and WWF) and won - no one officially knows how much he got. Shultz was fired, although he claims the WWF told him to hit Stossel (RIIIIGHT).

amazing, i just saw this video on a wrestling forum yesterday.....the reporter got what he desirved, because he tried the one things (expecally back in the day) that was not tollerated(sp) making a wrestler break kayfabe, which the wrestler stayed in character and done what he may have thought would be the only to defend the sport.....of course wrestling is fake, with storylines, and preplaned spots, but the thing is, it's not fake when some one messes up and/or if some stupid person is at home trying the same moves........it takes years and years of practice to do what these guys do in the ring, making every move and spot look real.......of course you have to get used to pain, to be able to sell good moves, hell even ric flair's chops is one of the most painfull blows........sorry for the long rant, but some ppl really don't get what pro wrestling is about, please correct me if i'm wrong

Doesn't matter what wrestling is "about", or what is "tolerated". This guy can hit whoever he wants IN the ring, whether it's scripted or not. The point is, he can't just bitch-slap people OUTSIDE the ring and get away with it, no matter how annoying they are. (And what did John Stossel do that was so bad? He said he thought it was fake. Doesn't matter if it's fake/scripted/arranged or real/tough/bloody, John Stossel can think what he wants.) And I don't know what "people trying it at home" has to do with anything.

I think the wrestler got what he deserved (sued & fired).

Bottom line is, you just can't go around hitting people; ESPECIALLY since he's an "athlete", which means he's probably much stronger than an average person (or reporter).

Obviously Shultz didn't get the memo saying that WWF/WWE was/is fake.

It is such an offense to insult a wrestler like that. There are two things you never do to a wrestler, you dont tell them the risks and sacrifices they make to entertain people are fake and reveal their secret handshake to people who are undeserving. This is not an issue of kayfabe, rather its an issue of respect and honour. I mean what this guy does is such a HUGE commitment. In a way every sport is fake...

So John Stossel deserved to punished because he "insulted" a wrestler? Because he dared to do something "you never do to a wrestler", namely, suggest publicly (and to the wrestler's face) that, in his opinion, wrestling might be fake? Come on, give me a break!

It doesn't matter whether or not it's an "offense" - and f*@k "respect and honour" - Shultz committed assault, right on video. He deserved to be sued, and have his career ended. He has no "honor", if he doesn't know the difference between the ring and the real world.

Every sport is NOT fake. If MLB planned ahead of time who would end up in the World Series, then I would agree that it's fake, even if they were really hitting the ball and running. But it's NOT planned - it's a real sport. Sure, wrestlers have to be in shape, and they can get hurt - but it's entertainment, not a competitive sport. (Of course, I'm not talking about actual competitive wrestling, like college wrestling. I'm talking about so-called "Professional" wrestling, like WWE.) I'm sure lots of people are entertained by it and love it, but it's not a real competition.

And don't make me laugh about "risks and sacrifices" and "commitment" - you know who take risks and make sacrifices? Soldiers. Cops. Firefighters. Teachers. Not grown men in tights hitting each other with chairs following a script.

oh no he made fun of the redneck asshole, big deal. the wrestler was a big fucking baby throwing a tantrum when someone said something that hurt his little feelings. he deserved to get sued and fired and I hope he enjoys being the local mcdonalds bully after that.

lol what is funny is that, he was selling his character, and ppl are like as if he shot the president.....everyone knows, even sport reporters that no matter what wrestlers will defend the sport no matter the consiquenes.....as for this incident, it could have been a work(real, but preplained, or was still part of a storyline, or to cause shock tv).....one occasion(sp) Jarry the King Lawler(sp) slaping Andy Kauhfman(sp) on late night with David Letterman.....For years upon years ppl thought that was a really fight, but to come to the truth it was a work....And it worked very well, ppl thought they actually hated each other and wanted to kill one another.....Don't allow everything that you see fool you....so i'm a wreslting geek and proud of it....funny how many ppl will flam me for saying that, but i really could careless lol....

No, they're calling it what it is. Assault. No where in written law does it state Assault is crime "unless you're a wrestler." He can "Sell his Character" just fine in many different LEGAL ways. There is absolutely no reason for a wrestler to break the law in order to "sell his character."

Which is why Stossel won a $450,000 settlement.

For years huh? You don't think people clued in when Kaufman "threatened" to sue for $200 million but instead ended up in the ring with Lawler? How about when Lawler recieved the $5,000 bounty piledriver from Jimmy Heart, delivered via The Assassins...?

For years...lol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Lawler read that little page, and u'll find out that it was planed......Like i said, it was part of the storyline my good friend....What i'm trying to say is, that not all things you see in the world of pro wrestling is real, expect for mistakes(deaths, broken bones, etc).....They will go many lenths to make everything seem real, even getting the new media involed...if you like to find out more things about the world of wrestling, go to a news site, where they will tell what's going on backstage and the politics that come with the buisness....

ps little info on what a work is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_%28professional_wrestling%29

It is silly how far some of you are going to defend what is blatantly assualt due to the fact that the all-mighty keyfabe was disregarded. Get your head out of wrestlings ass already.

I used to watch wrestling when I was younger so this isn't about me disliking wrestling. Recently, though, I flipped through a pro wrestling show and it was just humorous. The moves, the acting, everything was so obviously choreographed.

As for the crap about honor, commitment, and sacrifice; wrestling is nothing more than lifting wieghts and practicing moves. Of course there is some commitment but nothing close to any other sport (if you can call professional wrestling that). You want to see real sacrifice and commitment then watch some MMA such as UFC or PRIDE. It isn't the occasional Ric Flair's "most painful" chop; it is taking actual hits and being in top physical condition to defeat an opponent in an actual fight.

Thank you! Finally somebody that knows what real fighting is. I watch U.F.C. and i can say these guys dont mess around. They dont run their mouths, or dance around, they just 'GET IT ON'. By the way loved the video, regardless of anything.

I know it was planned. That was my point...
You said people believed it was real for "years upon years". I merely pointed out how obvious it was to be a "work" as you put it.

Either way, that case is different than this "video" case because it wasn't a work, it wasn't a ruse, it wasn't preplanned. It was assault plain and simple. The wrestler thought he was a bad ass, thought he was above the law and that he could hit anyone. He was wrong and the courts proved it.

yeah my bad on that one, i missed read your statment refuse....for the rest of course it's fake, i never said it was real, everyone knows that ufc or k-1 fighters can take apart pro wrestlers(maybe for exception of a few) any day of the week(watch bam bam bigalow(sp) get stomped by a mma fighter, on youtube)......if this incident wasn't set up, yeah the wrestler should have been fined, but he did what he thought was good for the business at the time....no excuse though diffently....but look at van vader when he was in japan(i do believe) a reporter made a statement that wrestling was fake, and got his ass handed to him........the reason why back in the day wrestlers cared about ppl making that kind of statement, was because it took years of trainning, and injuies to get to that point, also to have the illousion(sp) of the sport being real....also finally back in the day ppl actually believed that wrestling was real to a point, if you don't think so, watch old clips back in the 60's-70's, compaired to todays fans......there is no excuse for the wrestler, but i was just saying you never know when it was a work or a real situation..even then promotions will use the real situation, and make story of it, like the ric flair incident(road rage), etc.......but like i said there was no excuse for the wrestler to do what he did, but would have you done the same if you was in his shoes??

Edit: then you have asses like myself whom don't read everything that's out there, just like the first message on this thread where, the reporter took the incident to court....yeah i'm great like that....
