Ive always been into jazz since i started playing in my school's jazz band 2 years ago. It really opened me up to the genre but unfortunatly i never got around to picking up an album, and ive decided that tommorow Im going to pick one up, im just having trouble deciding which one, which is where all of you can help me out. :)

Definitely Miles Davis. Classic jazz album that's classic and historic. The whole album is completely improvised, which is the core of jazz. The artists on this CD played whatever came to their mind, with no previous practice, to create music on the spot using the "framework."

Go for it, it's definitely an album you can't refuse.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue is where you start, Milestones is not bad either. I'm a fusion guy too, so check out Bitches Brew as well
John Coltrane - Giant Steps, A Love Supreme, and my personal favorite, Crescent
Art Blakey - The Big Beat, A Night in Tunisia, Moanin'
Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come, Tomorrow is the Question!
Duke Ellington's Live at Newport '58 is the only record I have by him, but it's incredible.
Anything by Charlie Parker. The only thing I have by him is a compilation on Vinyl.
And Wes Montgomery's The Incredible Jazz Guitar was the album the opened the doors for me.

hmm...there's so much, but those are my favorites

Love Supreme is amazing, but that stuff is pretty deep for a jazz newcomer. I was 12 when I first heard it and I was overwhelmed by it.

But it really makes my day to see someone making an effort to get into such a great kind of music.

Being a Jaco fan myself, I have to say Heavy Weather. The fact that you even know about that album is a good sign.
It really depends what you're looking for though. If you want just straight-up classic jazz, go for Miles Davis. If you want fusion and more innovative stuff, get Heavy Weather. Herbie's great too, but it's a little wierd at first, takes some getting used to, still a great album.
Anyway, I say Heavy Weather. It's got oodles of great bass playing (as well as stellar performances from the rest of the band, Wayne Shorter is a fuckin sax-god). It's considered a huge breakthrough/landmark album in the world of fusion and should at least be sampled if you're into that kind of music.

edit--
As an "other" suggestion, I'd have to reccomend Jaco Pastorius' self-titled album. It's more along the lines of classic jazz rather then fusion, every song is a fuckin masterpiece, and it is an absolute plethora of innovative bass-playing genious. You won't be disappointed with that one, I garuntee it.

double edit--Hell, PM me if you want, I'll hook you up if you want to get into Jaco/Weather Report. I'm always happy to help someone out with that.

Agreed, definitely check out some Mingus. He was one HELL of a bassist, great musician.

Also:
Stanley Clarke. Look into his older stuff, the newer albums got really smooth jazzy and fairly gay. But back in the day he was a fuckin god on both electric and acoustic (upright) basses. His solo stuff was great, but for some really incredible shit, listen to his stuff with Chick Corea & Return to Forever.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Jaco Pastorius - S/T (or some Weather Report stuff)

But Hancock, Mingus and Coltrane are all great too.

If you're wanting something which is more rockish, perhaps you might want to get Between Nothingness and Eternity (live album) or Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra. The first time I heard the live album, I thought it was a studio album, because McLaughlin is practically flawless. Anyway, it's fusion jazz.

My favourite jazz artist is probably Thelonious Monk. It might not be a good introduction to jazz, because his piano style can come across as slightly strange to some people. But I love him.

Wholeheartedly agree that Miles' 'Kind of Blue' is essential-everybody should own that album.
I'm quite partial to John Coltrane's 'Blue Train.'
Jazz vocals-'The Best of Chet Baker Sings'
Jazz guitar-try something by John McLaughlin, 'My Goal's Beyond' prolly the best to start.
Jazz fusion-Miles' 'In a Silent Way' (hypnotic)

Of those three I would choose Kind of Blue, which I just noticed you did. Good choice. If you want something a little more upbeat, go get Giant Steps by Coltrane.
