Have you ever rented a movie to find it is black and depressing as hell? I rented "The Hours" last night. Good god I felt like slitting my wrists half way through. Nothing like a movie that just picks you up and makes you want to jump off a building. Have you ever rented one of these feel like shit movies?

I've seen too many depressing movies. But one I just watched recently was The Grey Zone, a movie about the holocaust. Too damn graphic if you ask me.

Is say that the passion of the christ was probably the only movie that made me think. It's also the only movie that probably made me cry. :(

I am avoiding "Passion of the Christ" just because I hate crying. That sucks. It has to be something really, really depressing for me to cry and it just sucks.

Call me crazy, but, John Q depressed the hell out of me. I think the thought that our medicare and society is so horrible that money is more important than life depressed me.

Oh another one, "About Schmidt" with Jack Nicholson. I wanted to see it because it was filmed here, but damn it was very black and depressing.

I am with you on the Holocaust movies, I never made it through Schindlers List. The only Holocaust movie that I could watch was "Its a Beautiful Life"

Did you notice that they somehow made a movie about genocide rather chipper?! I still cried at the end though . . .

More depressing movies. Last of the Mohicans, Monsters Ball, Leaving Las Vegas, and Blow.

Yes, I saw that movie last week. It wasn't his cat he put in the oven, it was his deformed baby that he just shot. He also shot his pregnant wife in the stomach. That movie kinda did suck, but the ending was really twisted and depressing.

I may be showing my age here, but there were some very artful and depressing films in the early 60's. Here are a few I liked:

- Days of wine and roses with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick (1962)
- The Hustler with Paul Newman and Piper Laurie (1961)
- What ever happened to Baby Jane, Bette Davis And Joan Crawford (1962)
- Requiem for a Heavyweight, Anthony Quinn and Jackie Gleason (1962)

Although a very dramatic, intense movie, I found American History X to be really depressing. Great movie, not a real happy ending though. But I guess that's what I expected going into it.

Call me a wimp, but I cry at so many movies. Here is a list of some of the movies I cried at, ending with the one that moved me the most:

13. Hearts in Atlantis - when Ted get's taken away.
12. The Green Mile - at the end.
11. Forrest Gump - when he's at Jenny's grave.
10. We were soldiers - when the women are handing out the letters.
9. Men of Honor - the scene where De Niro breaks Gooding Jr.'s radio.
8. John Q. - when the dad is talking to his son before he's going to shoot himself.
7. Radio - when Radio's mom dies.
6. Schindler's List - almost all the way through.
5. The Pianist - when he pulls the dead kid under the wall.
4. LOTR Trilogy - a bunch of places.
3. The Elephant Man - at the end, when he lies down to die.
2. Winter's End - at the end, when the dad and son forgive each other.

And the number one movie I cried at:

1. Dad - mainly the scene where the dad and son hug before the operation.

Requiem For A Dream......killer soundtrack...great film.... one of the most messed up films i've ever seen

Cat Puncher
07-04-2004, 10:48 AM
I knew Requiem would be dropped a lot, and it deserves to be. Great movie too.

Another great movie, that just destroyed me was House of Sand and Fog. Christ, an amazing fucking movie, and just so damned depressing. It's the closest I've come to crying in 4 years. Ugh, just so damn good.

And yeah, the ending to Matchstick Men is so much more depressing than the rest of the picture. I liked it a lot.

Edit: Oh yeah, almost forgot. Nobody's probably seen it, but this little french-canadian flick called The Barbarian Invasions. Pretty good movie, but utterly depressing end that is really damn good.

Someone hit the nail on the head with "Stand By Me".

Also, "Donnie Darko" was somewhat depressing...especially the alternate ending, where they actually show Donnie dead after the engine crashes through his bedroom. "Ginger Snaps" is depressing at the end too...well, to me at least. It didn't take the usual "the hero walks away into the sunset" approach, but just kinda' lingered there while sad music played and while the wolf (Ginger) died.

house of sand and fog was amazing.....but again, it just dragged me down...there's so many out there.... mystic river.....one of my my customers started going off when i was renting it to him about how all sean penn does is whine and cry and what not..... it's not entirely true.... fast times and ridgemont high was awesome

on a brighter note, Love Actually was pretty damn good, was a nice pick me up, since most of the time i only end up watching the downer ones... it's just nutz, how they have this 8 year old er whatever, and he feels so struck down by love... he manages to sum up love so perfectly, yes i know, just a movie... but still...
