I have an xbox 360 and have been trying to connect it to my PC. I keep getting a configuration error when trying to authorize the xbox while running the setup application. Could someone possibly straighten this matter out for me? I have no idea what I am doing wrong. It says I should be able to connect the XBOX360 to the PC through a simple ethernet connection but I think my router is behind the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS I have a D-Link Router and don't have Media Centre on my computer.

I have home edition and my 360 plugs directly into the computer and I get no problems. It's probably the router.

Any ideas what ports I'd need to open to allow my XBOX to connect to our home network?

Are you using the ethranet cord that came with the xbox? Make sure that the router is set up properly and enable the Local Area Network. It should work.

The problem is I can't get my XBOX360 to pass the IP test. I can't seem to get the router to assign it an IP.

connect your xbox to your PC and try going into your network connection and right click on the internet connection your using. then click on repair.

You need to use a regular ethernet (NOT a crossover) cable to connect your xbox 360 to your router. Once you do that, fire it up and go to your router configuration screen (most routers can be accessed by typing something like 192.168.1.1 into an internet browser) and find your "attatched devices" page (or something to that effect, it will list all devices on your network). go back to your xbox and go to the configuration blade > network settings > test connection, now take a look at your mac address and vaguely remember it. Go back to your computer and look under the attatched devices list for your xbox 360's mac address. Copy that mac address to the clipboard with control+c and then go do your Address Reservation page... Use that page to assign a static IP to your 360 on the network by putting in the MAC Address you just copied and the desired IP position within the network (ie, 192.168.1.5) now your xbox will always have that sub-ip on the network and no other device will claim it. Go to your WAN set up and enable DMZ Hosting. Set your DMZ host to your xbox's new static IP. DMZ hosting your xbox will place it outside of most of the router's firewall's, but there's more left to do! Next, you might have to do some searching to find this option, but you need to Disable NAT Firewall, Enable Ping From Internet, and enable UPnP. Once you've done all that, you should run the network test again in the 360 config blade, you should be pulling the IP that you assigned it, and at the bottom of the test results you should see "NAT Settings - OPEN". If NAT Settings returns as STRICT, or MODERATE, you didn't successfuly change the NAT settings, set the DMZ host, or enable UPnP. If you continue to play with STRICT or MODERATE, you will be able to play online but you will encouter alot of connection issues when playing people over xbox live... some games much worse than others. Specifically PGR3 and CHROMEHOUNDS will give you endless problems unless your NAT result is OPEN.
A few other things to try:
even if the router isnt seeing the xbox, enable UPnP and disable NAT firewall, this may be the problem right off the bat, my computer wont see my 360 unless those are set properly. Also, the very first thing you might want to try is plugging your 360 directly into your cable modem and taking the router (and everything else) out of the mix. That's the best way to see where the problem lies. If it still wont pull an IP after it's hooked directly up to the cable modem, your xbox could be faulty. But I doubt that's the case.
I hope you find that information useful, it took me a good while to figure out back when I was having similar problems. Good luck bro!
EDIT: Did that help? The thread stopped here, so I'm gonna assume I gave you the info you needed to fix the problem and you've been too busy enjoying xbox live to come back and say thanks ;)

Well your steps worked like a charm for half my problem.
Before, my PC wasn't detecting my 360 nor vice versa. I connect strictly through a Linksys BEFSR41 v4.1. It solved all but one problem, can't get my 360 to detect my PC...I have Zune and Windows Media Player to have sharing enabled. Maybe an option or something I did inside the 360?
I also configured my Windows Firewall to the recommended ports here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911728
I use Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. Here's the tricky thing about this...
If I disconnect it from my router to a Network Hub *really crappy because for some reason it doesn't want my PC or 360 to connect to the net* they detect each other just fine....but as stated, can't go on Xbox Live or anything like that...no internet connection, just a network connection. But seeing that now my PC is seeing the 360....think there might be some things in my router wrong...I had to skip a step some steps because I could find it...well skip one and guessed on another...
The one I skipped: Enable Ping From Internet....dunno how to do that...couldn't figure it out.
The one I guessed at: Then go do your Address Reservation page... Use that page to assign a static IP to your 360 on the network by putting in the MAC Address you just copied and the desired IP position within the network (ie, 192.168.1.5) now your xbox will always have that sub-ip on the network and no other device will claim it. Go to your WAN set up....I went to my QoS page because I couldn't find ANYTHING in my router that said Address Reservation Page....I entered the MAC address in the QoS page under Applications and Gaming. So I went to the one thing that allowed you to enter the Xbox's name and MAC address besides the option MAC Address Clone....which was in QoS...
Update: I did a Media Center connection test *even though I don't use Media Center....* and it said that my console didn't obtain an IP Addy from my DHCP server. Think that might have somethin to do with it?
Oh I didn't notice the dates on the post....I'm sorry for bumping an old thread...
UPDATE: After 8 freakin hours I figured it out!!!!!!!!!!!! lol All I had to do was clone my PC's MAC address inside the router! See...I knew it had to be somethin simple lol. The only thing that'd make something like that hard to figure out. Either way, right now I'm watchin Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge Of The Sith of my PC's hdd. No lag, just like watcin it off DVD. It's workin great! Thanks for the guide Wipeout! If ya ever see ya on Xbox Live, I'll give ya a holler...if ya play PGR 3...hell I'll prolly race ya...might beat ya....who knows lol thanks for the guide tho, your a life saver.

go to internet explorer and try enabling connection sharing in tools/connection/settings/properties/advanced box

Dude, fuck all that. Just buy a cheap Xbox and hack XBMC onto it. It runs pretty much everything VLC media player can, plus has trippy visualizations for music, weather info, and a picture viewer. And it even works well over wireless connected computers.
