I might be getting a psp, but considering most of the games for it are crap, I'd just be getting it mainly for the homebrew and emulator crap. If i get one with the latest firmware version will i be able to get emulators on it? And to anyone who has experience with an N64 emu on it, does it control ok and will any rom work with it or are only some compatible?

You will be able to get the emulators but not the homebrew stuff for that you would need one that before 2.0

I never knew you could do that. how do n64 roms work with the lack of buttons on the psp?

no idea, which is why I was wonderin..I found an N64 emu for the psp but I dont wanna go out and blow 200 bucks on one only to find out it either doesnt work or has really shitty controls. If it does work ok though, 200$ would be worth it just to have portable paper mario :). Do you know if the downgraders work? I've heard they do but some can fuck up the system.

Homebrewing is hard to do and figure out and if you don't follow the steps you could turn it into a brick.

Yeah and not only that is if any new games comes out...Lets say by some amazing chance something like...Zelda comes out on PSP, you wont be able to play it without the latest firmware. You need the latest firmware to play the latest games.

And of course you could fuck up and void any warranty.

I was thinking about doing it myself untill a gamestop employee told me about the above.

I have had a psp since day 1 and i love it. I admit though that there is a huge lack of games. But what the people told you is half right. You do need specific firmwares. But, there is a homebrew application thats easy to install that will let u emulate future firmwares right now it works on up to 2.71 so you can play games that require that firmware. And what you have heard about bricking with downgraders usually only happens if you are a complete dumbass. As for bricking with other homebrew if you wanna be safe just dont use homebrew that needs kernel access. pspupdates.qj.net has alot of stuff for people new to the psp. But there is one risk that you take, sony released a psp with a new mobo in it called ta-082 and like nothing involving homebrew works on that yet but people are working on it.

Lol, it's really not that hard! I've helped a couple people on these forums getting homebrew working.

Well I'm kind of lazy to explain the stuff now but you can check from the box if your version is downgradable to a 1.5 firmware where you can have full homebrew capabilities. This thread here (http://forums.qj.net/f-guides-general-psp-42/t-determining-psp-firmware-using-box-codes-july-27-2006-28718.html) will tell you how to tell apart versions from the box serial. If you're really having trouble finding a downgradable version, I recommend going to a store that people generally don't buy games from like Zellers.
