I just got a '01 Camaro SS about 5 months ago and was wondering what flows/mufflers/headers are the best sounding/performing/looking for the Camaro.

I heard of flowmaster mufflers and borla catbacks, but don't know much about them.

Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated!
(If you got links for pics, performance reports, prices, and whatnot, please include!)

Well you've got a choice, if you aren't going to lower the car, grab Long tube headers. They're the best for the LS1 and are used by all of the LS1/6 engine builders. They rave about them.

You'll want to get at least 2 inch exhaust.

and Corsa, and Borla are the two most talked about in terms of the rear section of the exhaust. Personally I like B&B Tri Flo(? I think they changed their name)--they sound AWESOME and very VERY mean. However some people prefer the sound of a more ferrari like whine/whistle. I never understood it myself but that's what you'll get with the Corsas and Borlas from what I've seen.

Angryredneck should be able to help you. I helped him install a short throw the other day. Lots of fun. :) Kuffar's turn to chime in.

Oh and not only is what I'm saying backed by redneck, but also my classic "how to build small block chevy's", "Corvette Magazine", as well as "Building Your LS1/6" book. They're great reads. Lots of really useful tips in there. I don't even have any of these cars and I learned a lot. Couple free mods too.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET BLOWMASTER (flowmaster). It makes the least power...................For low budget, get hooker. Medium budget = MAGNAFLOW. I have it, it makes the most power, made of stainless steel, $385 (cheaper than borla/corsa, fuck both of them, it's expensive and sounds ricey cause it's high pitched). Only down side = it's quiet. It takes a month for the muffler to break in, then it sounds good, but still not loud. I love loud cars, but this keeps attention away from the cops, it makes the most power, and it's kinda stealthy (in the sound dept at least). No droning at cruise, very quiet, and an easy install.

My pick = magnaflow.

It's quiet until you open it up (and the muffler is broken in)........then..........

As for headers, get Longtubes with cats (if you have emissions), such as SLP, FLP's, or Hooker. Hookers are cheap, but only come with an offroad pipe (you will need to make a custom one for cats). For ground clearance or strict emissions, go with MAC MIDLENGTHS. They are decent, no loss of clearance, comes with offroad or catted Y. Not as much power, but good. It will be my pick..........I can't afford to lose clearance. If you do handling mods later, do not get lowering springs if concerned with clearance or run LT headers..............get 1LE springs (then again I think SS's already have them). They are good handling springs with stock height.

Go here to shop:

The loudmouth is the loudest, makes decent power, BUT DO NOT COMBINE WITH AN OFFROAD Y PIPE. Too much rasp and pigs will be all over you like mud. I would choose magnaflow, with either Finish Line Longtubes or thunder racing ones.

veX: I agree with you on the mufflers that give that whine/whistle. POINTLESS to have a nice V8 rumble in my car with those baby screamers... :) And I think I will definately get more aquainted with the reading material. Always good to research before possibly fucking up my car. ;)

Angry:  Niiiiiiice sounding exhaust, definately got me jizzing in my pants! That's EXACTLY what i'm looking for! Thanks for the clips of your sweet sweet ride... :D I think I will invest in the MAGNAFLOW with MAC MIDLENGTHS or THUNDERRACING (whatever gives best clearance) 'cause I hate bottoming out my car... makes me cringe :o

--> One last question for ya Angry or veX...
What do you mean when you say "open up"? I get the breaking in part, but is there something else you do to open up the sound?

Nope, just drive it around until it breaks in. You will definitely know when that happens. I meant it only gets loud when you open it up, as in stomp on the gas all the way. :p

If you want maximum loudness and aren't concerned about emissions (ie, you know a friend who owns a shop and can throw cats back on for $0), then go with the B&B Tri Flow Exhaust (click here and read (http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?p=888139#post888139post888139)),

After that, x-pipe and 2.0 inch (or slightly greater) pipes, then as you get to the headers--if I were you I'd save up and get the long tubes. You'll get the most from them. Look around, perhaps you'll be able to find a different brand that has a slightly better bend in them. Kook for example supposedly was getting popular but I'm not sure as to why. And if u want to lower the car you can always just upscale the size of your rims to 17s front, 18s rear. :D Give it the badass corvette stance.

If that's what you're looking for then forget what I just said cuz then angry's exhaust is loud enough for you. LOL if you attempt at going with the setup above you're gunna blow your ears out. But for a good purpose/reason. :D

X pipes give you 0 clearance, it's worse than anything out there, do not do this. And you mean at least 2.5" for an x pipe vex.......................2" is for fucking 200 hp cars................lol

Just a question, but doesn't the Z28 come with a hurst shifter? (like the SS model) Isn't that already short??? And you made it even SHORTER? Does that make a big difference in shifting time or is it just a preference to have a really short throw?

He has a used car with 80k miles on it. Because of all those miles I think it got sloppy. I'm not sure about the stock shifter. But this one made the length of the shifts as well as the shifter itself shorter and more precise.

The SS has a hurst shifter..............Mine is a stock piece of shit, with long throws, sloppy as shit, and it was just a pos.

People even say the Hurst sucks compared to an aftermarket shifter, such as a Pro 5.0 or B&M. I'd say go and get a shifter, trust me. It even beats your hurst.

And, the B&M Ripper I put in isn't that short at all. My friend has a 5.0 stang with a pro 5.0 shifter, and it's so short you can't tell what gear you're in by looking at the stick cause it doesn't move lol, and u just have to move your wrist to shift. Mine is in between, just a little shorter than stock. It's nice.

flowmaster 40 series is supposed to have the best sound.

Angryredneck
05-28-2004, 01:44 AM
Sound is subjective.............Flowmasters have alot of backfiring, which I think is cool lol, but it's very untuned, and it DRONES LIKE HELL IN ALL CARS. Can get annoying for people who can't take it. ;)

i myself would put electric cut outs so when you feel like hearing it rumble.......just push the buttom...........or the 40 series single chamber would sound pretty damn good

i have Kooks stainlesss headers and 2.5" true duals with an x pipe and Borla XR1 race mufflers with turndowns before the axle. I have a 2000 WS6 and it is lowered 1.3" and i have plenty of ground clearance and it sounds mean as hell with the true duals (best sounding exhaust for fbodys in my opinion) Check out LS1.com, LS1Tech.com, and LS2.com for lots of information on these cars.
