Word up.
Post obscure bands that music "heads" or people in general tend to overlook or dismiss off-hand or are just unaware of but are really good indeed. Hopefully, this will expand our horizons. Maybe even post joints. If anyone wants these I'll host em.
If this fails, I was fighting the good fight, so I was...
Kenneth Leighton: Demonic, mysterious, intense choral music - if you enjoy the bit on In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida where the organ ascends and does that devilish ha ha ha sound you'll love this. Terrifying, what horror soundtracks wish they could be.
taste_u Recommends: "Et Ressurexit", "Solus Ad Victimam"
Barry Manilow: Yes, Barry "botox" Manilow. He may be cheesy and he may sell millions and live in Elvis's Penthouse, but I feel amongst music lovers and snobs he is criminally underrated. The man is a great performer and writes really well-crafted, moving songs.
taste_u Recommends: "Live", "Manilow II"
Scott Walker: The sound of nightmares in music. A Sinatra-like crooner wailing over dark, frenzied, scuttering soundscapes, sounds like cockroaches crawling under your floorboards, a scarecrow is moving in the distant fog, it was a bad idea for you to go walking by the canals alone, a bad idea, and don't you just know it now. Such an eerie effect.
taste_u Recommends: "The Drift", "Tilt"
Ustad Ali Akbar Kahn: In terms of Indian classical music, a few of us know Ravi Shankar, but this guy is the absolute fucking God. Eerie, thunderous, powerful, orgasmic - otherworldly. No more metaphors.
taste_u Recommends: "Signature Series Volume One", "Three Ragas (with Ravi Shankar)"
Organized Konfusion: Wu-Tang Killa Bees, we on the swarm. If you like the Wu, you will love this - dope flow, "dark beats", yeeeeah. To the uninitiated, rather like Bitches Brew by Miles Davis but with niggas spitting heat over the top, and ooooh what heat it is that they spit.
taste_u Recommends: "Stress: The Extinction Agenda"
Hamza El Din: Nubian Oud player. The legacy of Ancient Egyptian culture and all the mystery it entails preserved in the haunting playing and singing of one man. Just really beautiful stuff, when the mood takes you.
taste_u Recommends: "Eclipse", "Escalay: The Water Wheel"
Renaissance Choral Music: Not really album format stuff, but if you like that monky eerie sombre sound you'll be wanting to get some of this.
taste_u Recommends: Thomas Tallis - "Spem In Alium" and "Te Lucis Ante Terminum", William Byrd - "Ave Verum Corpus", Gregorio Allegri "Misererei Mei, Deus"
Public Image Ltd.: Dub/funk basslines and funky, tight rhythms over demonic guitar shredding and banshee wailing from John Lydon. Abrasive, repetitive, hypnotic, metallic powerhouse. Really challenging, but rewarding in turn. Best is Poptones - beautiful melody is hinted at beneath the bed of sound, hinted at but not delivered, out of reach - musical enigma.
taste_u Recommends: "Metal Box", "Flowers Of Romance", "First Issue"
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band: People go on about Led Zeppelin and their ilk but as far as "classic rock" goes SAHB are premier league material. They rock hard, their music is moving, they are very diverse. The songs "The Faith Healer", "Hammer Song" and "Isobel Goudie" will demonstrate this, should ye care to download them.
taste_u Recommends: "Framed", "Next", "Live"
Genesis: Quite a few people are into progressive rock, but criminally few are aware of just how much arse Genesis used to kick before Phil Collins took the reins and steered them towards MOR shite. Best prog band ever.
taste_u Recommends: "Selling England By The Pound", "Wind & Wuthering (pre-release)" (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=30C1209A5A8E8D8A), "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway"
Jaco Pastorius--The most influential (and arguably "best") bass player ever. He single-handedly changed the roll of the electric bass and paved the way for every bass soloist to come since his time. Without him, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Flea etc, would not be what they are.
Humble Pie--One of the most unknown classic rock bands in the world. Just fuckin listen to them, they kick ass. Kind of a mix between The Who and Led Zeppelin, seriously great soul-influenced classic rock.

Word. I've never heard of them, but I will begin a limewire search asap.
As far as the topic goes.
porcupine tree - Great modern prog. Good mix of light/poppy songs with heavy/fast paced songs. Steven Wilson is one of my top 5 favorite vocalists and the new drummer, Gavin Harrison is possibly the second coming of Bill Bruford(drummer of Yes/King Crimson, etc.). That pretty much means he's fucking good. They used to be kind of unkown, but they are definately getting a lot more attention now.

Some good rap artists..
Aceyalone-
Wylde Bunch - Rap group, just like The Roots, they play their own instruments. I recommend "I Don't Give A Damn" if you're ever gonna check them out.
Dilated Peoples - Good hip-hop group, check out "Live On Stage (Remix)" featuring Talib Kweli.
EPMD - "Crossover", tight song...
KRS-One - Check out "Phucked"
Pharoahe Monch - Organized Konfusion member, good stuff...
Volume 10 - "Pistol Grip Pump", good song, RATM also did a remake of it.

Pain of Salvation - Prog Metal
Samael - Metal
Riverside - Prog Rock/Metal
The Zombies - Classic Rock
The Electric Prunes - Classic Rock
Arsis - Great Melodic Death Metal
I also agree with Yes and Porcupine Tree, although I don't think Yes is really overlooked... they did have Dream Theater open for them just a year or two ago on a tour.

Yeah, good luck with the search, I don't know of a single Humble Pie song that's not at least decent.
As for PT, they kick uber-ass. Good call on them, not enough people know of them.
One more band for the thread:
Big Sugar. Just kick-ass rock, generally it's fairly mellow groove-oriented rock, perfect for driving. I suggest everyone give them a try too, but they're not for everyone, kind of an acquired taste. Big Sugar = great chill music. Also one of my favorite singers (along with Porcupine Tree)

Teddybears & Mad Cobra - Cobrastyle
Velvet Revolver - Headspace
Dope - Everything Sucks
E Nomine - Vater Unser
Chimaira - Implements of Destruction

12 Stones - Broken
Rufio - Out of Control
A Perfect Circle - The Outsider
Alterbridge - Metalingus
Damien Marley - Welcome to Jamrock
Bond - Explosive (classical-techno)
Lost Prophets - We still kill the old way
Muse and Kamelot are also some good bands to look up.
Phew, I think that's it for the more unknown bands I have.

The Beach Boys- yes, I know they're hardly obscure, but I think I'm the only one on here that ever mentions them. Get Pet Sounds, it's one of the best albums of the sixties.
The Aquabats- Not a lot of depth musically, but their fun to listen to from time to time. I like Charge the most out of their albums.
Frank Black- (If you don't know who he is, get some Pixies right now, Surfer Rosa and Doolittle) His solo career is pretty good. I like Honeycombs best, but Teenager of the Year is another strong album.
Neutral Milk Hotel- Download In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and listen to a few times. A great fucking album.
Paul Anka- Download Rock Swings. I actually prefer his version of Black Hole Sun to the original, and all of the covers are great, even the Nirvana one.
The Shins- Fairly well known. They may take some listens to get used to, but both of their albums are really good.
The Zombies- They've been mentioned before, and they're getting mentioned again for a reason.

I have humble pies anthology double album, it's pretty good.
May I throw up Shiver, they released an album called Walpurgs which I find quite good. They're a Swedish/german prog band from the 70's. Good shit.

Camel - Greatest prog rock band to grace the Earth IMO. It's brilliant badass music with a lot of flute.
Arcturus/Ulver - Both of these are bands involving the genius Garm. Seriously though, they have nice and varied discographies. Criminally underrated.
Isis - These guys mainly get overlooked, because the whole atmospheric/sludge doom scene is overlooked by most people. Isis is very awesomely atmospheric.
Mercyful Fate/King Diamond - Considering the number of Maiden/Priest/heavy metal fans around, these guys are surprisingly unknown. Both feature King Diamond with his flying falsettos.
Zaraza - Probably only of interest to doom metallers. Anyway, an interesting fusion of experimental funeral doom and industrial. Not very well known, but good and unique.
John Frusciante - RHCP is a huge band, but not that many get into his solo stuff. And many of those people walk right past his experimental 90s albums. Niandra Ladies & Usually Just a T-Shirt is a fucking great experimental album - and Frusciante is a great guitarist.
Faith No More - Mike Patton isn't exactly an unknown vocalist. He is renowned for his skill. But FNM just doesn't seem to have as many fans as they did in the 90s. It seems that every second kid on the block knows of RATM, but Faith No More seems to fade into oblivion. Not the easiest band to get into, but this is Mike Patton we're talking about. :D
I agree with Porcupine Tree. One of my favourite bands - they're becoming more known now, but still relatively unknown.

The Jesus Lizard - weird rock
John Smith - chill rap
Tha Alkaholiks - west coast rap
Compton's Most Wanted - west coast g funk
Too $hort - father of g funk
Goodie Mob - 90's southern rap
Lootpack - underground hip hop
MF Grimm - underground hip hop
Ill Bill - hardcore underground rap
The Birthday Massacre - electronic rock
Dredg - art rock
Iggy and The Stooges - punkish classic rock
Hank Williams Sr - old school country/western

Hawkwind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkwind). Their bio on wiki isn't the best written or the most complete, but yeah, Hawkwind... nuff said.
Here & Now (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Here_%26_Now_%28band%29). Offshoot from Gong/Planet Gong. Have done some awesome prog/space prog music - also featuring ex-Ozric Tentacles members.
It Bites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_bites). Pop/Rock/Jazz fusion band from the late 80's. Overlooked by everyone, criminally underrated. Most prog album - Once Around the World.
Budgie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budgie_%28band%29). Another overlooked and forgotten British rock band. Some of their later albums are of dubious quality in both music and production terms, but the earlier albums (up to Power Supply) is probably their best work. They're probably only known here for being a band that Metallica covered.
Ozric Tentacles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozric_Tentacles). Probably the most criminally overlooked British band in history. Flirted with popularity in the early 90's (headlining Glastonbury, top 10 album etc) but never really 'made it'. Have a huge worldwide following, released well over 20 albums and nobody's ever heard of them, which is fucking criminal as these guys have done some of the best music I've ever heard.

Kaleidoscope, an American psychedelic band from the late 60's that recorded 4 albums(I highly recommend A Beacon From Mars, all of their albums are great though). They had Country songs, psychedelic sitar jams, Celtic songs with fiddles in them, Normal brit pop songs, Psychedelic banjo jams(yes, I just wrote that) ragtime songs, middle eastern style jams, Blues, Jug band, old time jazz, Spanish Guitar work in some songs. Oh come on dude. I fuckin love this band, I guess it's just a matter of opinion, but IMO they are a fantastic example of soul & groove-influenced rock and have a very distinct sound that not many (if any) other bands had. And it's fuckin amazing to me that they're practically un-heard-of today, except that one song that everyone's heard and still doesn't know who wrote it (Get Down To It).

Robert Plant.
Everyone knows Led Zeppelin, a good deal of people liked Page & Plant, but I don't know anyone other then myself who listens to Robert Plant's solo stuff.
I would suggest Mighty Rearranger, it's an awesome album and I think just about anyone can get into it (very accessible), check that out first.

Yeah, post/atmospheric metal is underrated in general.
But I have a feeling it's going to become more popular with bands like Agalloch, Isis, Neurosis and Pelican finally beginning to gain more attention.
And post metal could be considered a natural progression from post rock which means post metal will gathe rmore fans.

Anathallo - Indie rock with bits of post-rock; they sometimes try to do too much
Andrew Bird - Interesting indie music; pretty mellow
Bill Frisell - Jazz guitarist; pretty relaxed music
Black Mountain - Indie rock mixed with classic rock; like Arcade Fire and Led Zeppelin
Can - Experimental music; started genres like post-rock and are highly influential (check them out if you like Radiohead's post-OK Computer albums)
Explosions in the Sky - Post-rock; extremely beautiful and dynamic music
Frog Eyes - Indie rock; very, very strange music. Short, fast songs with absolutely crazy vocals
King Crimson - Prog rock/Classic rock; sounds like Yes mixed with Jethro Tull
Minus the Bear - Indie rock; Interesting guitar work
Mogwai - Post-Rock; ambient, dynamic, somewhat creepy music
Mono - Post-rock; Beautiful melodies, complex guitar work, like
Explosions in the Sky. (Japanese band, not the American trip-hop one)
Múm - Post-rock; Like Sigur Rós, ambient, slightly experimental
Nick Drake - Folk guitarist; relaxing, autumnal melodies
Okkervil River - Folk/Indie rock; so-so vocals, but very good indie rock, especially their most recent album "Black Sheep Boy"
Pedro the Lion - Indie rock; mellow songs with good lyrics
Pinback - Indie rock; lo-fi sound, somewhat Elliott Smith-esque
Sigur Rós - Post-rock; beautiful, ethereal melodies and haunting vocals
Spoon - Indie rock; very catchy, unique songs

A lot of these were suggested to me by a former kickass member:
Can - Definately check these guys out. Get the album Tago Mago. Amazing, addicting stuff.
Organized Konfusion - Their album Stress: The Extinction Agenda is probably IMO one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made.
Jaco Pastorius - I think Mike said him earlier but I'll say it again. This guy owns on the bass. Get his self titled album.
Zombies - Fairly unknown but a great band from the 60's. Definately check out the album Oddessey & Oracle.
The Yardbirds - I guess you could consider them fairly unknown but get some of their music now. They're pretty much what could be considered a super group because Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton were all part of The Yardbirds at one time or another.
Medeski, Martin and Wood - Fairly unknown jazz/jam band. They kickass.
I'll think of more later but this is a fairly good list.

yyaaaayyy! More good Jaco albums (or other people's albums with Jaco on bass)
Pat Metheny--Bright Size Life...some amazing bass and guitar playing.
Weather Report--Night Passage, Heavy Weather, and 8:30 are all good albums.
Jaco Pastorius--The Birthday Concert, Word of Mouth, Invitation (which is an abridged version of "Twins"), Live in Italy.
The Zombies & The Yardbirds also kick ass, I don't know if they're really overlooked, more like they're acknowledged and never listened to. Lots of people have heard of them, but I don't know any real fans.

What are examples of post rock/post metal bands?
Post rock is hard to define, and is normally defined as rock with uses instruments for non instrumental purposes - that's a bit cryptic. Anyway, post rock is more about texture and atmosphere than individual riffs and solos - and that's why I group atmospheric rock/metal with post rock/metal.
For post rock, I'd check out Baneofevil's list since he's our post rock expert (I believe he even composes his own post rock). I especially like Sigur Ros and Mogwai.
Naturally post rock was drafted into metal as post metal and there are a fair few good post/atmospheric metal bands like:
Isis - Very dense and atmospheric. Check out Oceanic or Panopticon
Neurosis - Considered one of the fathers of post metal
Godflesh - As above
Pelican - Awesome band. If you only listen to one song, listen to 'Autumn Into Summer'. Completely instrumental band.
Agalloch - These guys are more folk/atmospheric than post metal, but very awesome. Their fanbase is growing all the time. Check out the Mantle or Pale Folklore
There are some more bands like Cult of Luna, Red Sparowes and Old Man Gloom.

Eh, Porcupine Tree is pretty much just a straight foward progressive rock band with metal and pychedelic tendencies. Though porcupine tree's earlier work was well more on the pychedelic side of things. I really wouldn't consider it post rock.

I would say PT's early stuff was psychedelic rock, and their later stuff progressive rock.
But they definitely have post rock elements. The ambience and attention to sound textures which PT has, is very post rock like. So I'd definitely recommend them to someone who likes post rock.

Yeah, Neurosis is great. With taste_u it was the other way around - he liked Neurosis and I recommended him Isis. Both killer bands though.
I can't decide whether I prefer Pale Folklore or the Mantle - it's hard to say. I think they have atmospheric elements, but in general I would classify them as folk/doom. However, in a topic on atmospheric metal, I won't hesitate to bring them up.
Jesu is great - but I haven't heard any Overmars yet.

Porcupine Tree are great, but it's hard to pigeon hole them into one particular genre as they've done so much and blended so many different styles into their music. They're a sort of post-Gong, psychedelic ambient space prog rock band - like I said, hard to confine to one particular genre. If you like PT you might like the Ozric Tentacles, as they play similar stuff.

Yeah, PT is hard to place - but I guess in labelling something as prog you expect it to test the boundaries of music in a few different directions. Definitely spacey and Floydish at times. I agree with your classification.

I agree. His solo albums kick a lot of ass.
Anyway, I'll throw in a couple of band/artist names that I think are pretty underrated. Some of them may have already been mentioned before.
Van Der Graaf Generator - Pretty good early 1970s English progressive rock band.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - ELP were arguably the first progressive rock supergroup, being comprised of ex-members of successful underground acts The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster.
The Flower Kings - Suprisingly good modern prog.
Roine Stolt - A major figure in Sweden's rock history, guitarist/singer/composer Roine Stolt led two of his country's most successful progressive rock bands: Kaipa in the 1970s and The Flower Kings in the 1990s onward.

That's kind of sad really. I remember reading some interview a music critic or what-not gave Jones about one of his solo albums. The critic said, 'But don't you think it sounds a little Zeppelin influenced' Jones simply replied, 'Don't you think Zeppelin was a little John Paul Jones influenced?' .. Couldn't agree more.
Anyway, Zooma and The Thunderthief are both very good albums by John. Some songs can be slightly repetive, but the music is still great.

I downloaded the Human Equation a few days ago, but I haven't listened to it yet. (I will do so next.) I've heard good things about it though.

Dunno if they've been mentioned, but the band Phoenix is just remarkable. I'm normally not into the whole pop scene, but this is the one band that I've listened to which every one of their songs is perfect.
Also, out of Minneapolis, The Blend is a really good hip-hop group.

Toto's entire discography. Prog-pop = best genre ever. Check out a song called 'On the Run' by Toto, sounds suspiciously like John Petrucci's Glasgow Kiss.

I would go to see this band. So would you."
No, I wouldn't. Suddenly rediscovering Chuck Norris is as gay as saying "leet" or "pwned". It screams of virginity and never having been in a fight. As a matter of fact, I call out all you trendy homos that think Chuck Norris is cool.
I remember Chuck. I remember that chick getting her nose impaled by the coke straw in "Invasion USA". You punks weren't old enough to watch it when it came out, much less be born. Fuck all you Chuck trendoids. Go listen to Nickleback.

And I thought I was the only Toto fan on here - respect to you for getting into Toto.
As for people sounding like Toto; there are bands out there that have had entire careers from, uh, borrowing Toto's melodies, progressions and riffs - not going to mention anybody individually *cough*Europe*cough* but yeah, mostly them, but there are others as well. I also think that Steve Lukather is a great, and woefully overlooked guitarist.

I didn't say that. Somebody else did, and I found it funny. It would have been funny without the mention of Chuck Norris. The humor was in the randomness of each person mentioned. Now take out the dildo, and chill.

Their stuff is so good, even a song as satisfying as On the Run was an overlooked b-side  I read about Steve Lukather's exploits with Santana and Beck in Japan in the 80s, he must be one of the most underrated guitarists there has ever been, the proof is in the pudding, check out the note choice in the guitar solo in Rosanna (not that you need to be told of course ;) )

I like Toto - they're probably one of the most talented pop bands I've heard (Level 42 excluded). Lukather is most definitely overlooked.

Hamza El Din is really fucking good. What is simply just one nigga playing the Oud and singing occasionally turns out to be some of the most emotionally powerful music I've ever heard. My eyes roll back in my head and I have a body orgasm listening to this. Truly some evocative shit.
All I've heard so far is Escalay: The Water Wheel. Downloading other shit of his from the all mighty soulseek right now. Just haunting, beautiful wow.
Also, I've recently gotten into Fela Kuti. Some very dope, groovey funkey afrobeat jazz. I've only heard Expensive Shit and Zombie but I reccomend both of those albums.
