Whats the saddest song you can think of that stirs up all kinds of emotion?

I need it for a video. Thanks everyone

One with minimal lyrics and a real emphasis on intrumentals are what I think makes a sad song.

Hurt - Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash

Sad stuff.
Amen to that, the first time i completely listened to The Downward Spiral all the way through, i felt depressed afterwards, for a good few days, i never had an album hit me like that, "Hurt" is one of the most emotional songs ive ever heard.

And watching the music video of Cash covering it its hard not to feel sad, knowing he died shortly afterwards and knowing that he was going to.

Hmm.. Through Her Eyes by Dream Theater has some pretty sad lyrics, and when you're really really down, it can make you cry if you're in the right mood. Also, State of Grace (the Evening w/ John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess version) has some very sad, slow melodies.

Elliott Smith - I Didn't Understand

Pretty much any Elliott song, but that's the saddest in my opinion. His layered vocals are just haunting.

And just cause, I'm saying for the third time Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah

A country song,
Don't Take the Girl - Tim Mcgraw

Warning: Tear Jerker

Johnnys daddy was taking him fishin
When he was eight years old
A little girl came through the front gate holdin a fishing pole
His dad looked down and smiled, said we cant leave her behind
Son I know you dont want her to go but someday youll change your mind
And johnny said take jimmy johnson, take tommy thompson, take my best friend bo
Take anybody that you want as long as she dont go
Take any boy in the world
Daddy please dont take the girl

Same old boy
Same sweet girl
Ten years down the road
He held her tight and kissed her lips
In front of the picture show
Stranger came and pulled a gun
Grabbed her by the arm said if you do what I tell you to, there wont be any harm
And johnny said take my money, take my wallet, take my credit cards
Heres the watch that my grandpa gave me
Heres the key to my car
Mister give it a whirl
But please dont take the girl

Same old boy
Same sweet girl
Five years down the road
Theres going to be a little one and she says its time to go
Doctor says the babys fine but youll have to leave
cause his mommas fading fast and johnny hit his knees and there he prayed
Take the very breath you gave me
Take the heart from my chest
Ill gladly take her place if youll let me
Make this my last request
Take me out of this world
God, please dont take the girl

Johnnys daddy
Was taking him fishin
When he was eight years old

A thousand times I've tried to walk away
I'm losing my mind about you
What can I say?
You keep telling me to let you go
That makes me want to cry
Cause God knows I love you so

Tell me what is going on
Tell me would it be all right

Gloomy Sunday

Version:

Rumours it led to several suicides:

http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/gloomy.htm

Lyrics:

Sunday is gloomy, my hours are slumberless.
Dearest, the shadows I live with are numberless.
Little white flowers will never awaken you,
Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you.
Angels have no thought of ever returning you.
Would they be angry if I thought of joining you?
Gloomy Sunday.

Gloomy is Sunday; with shadows I spend it all.
My heart and I have decided to end it all.
Soon there'll be candles and prayers that are sad, I know.
Death is no dream, for in death I'm caressing you.
With the last breath of my soul I'll be blessing you.
Gloomy Sunday.

Satriani is a blessing. His level of songwriting is quite high - I'd say the basic level of good songwriting is writing music which has good riffs/solos. The next level is probably writing on an emotional level. And the level after that is probably songwriting which creates different moods and takes your imagination places - and that's where Satriani writes at IMO, incorporating all three.

It's great that such a technically skilled guitarist can offer so much on a songwriting level.

Anyway, I seem to have a lot in common with most people here (musically), because I listen to a pretty wide range of music.

That film sucked unhealthy amounts of testicals, wayyyy too long.

a song i consider sad would be, for some odd reason, simple kind of life by no doubt. i have no clue as to why that is, it also brings up a feeling of nostalgia.

Trouble that can't be named, tigers waiting to be tamed (singing)
You are, you are

Come back and take you home, I could not stop, that you now know (singing)
Come out upon my seas, curse missed opportunities (am I)
A part of the cure, or am I part of the disease (singing)

Yes, Sigur Ros' album ( ) is fantastic. Untitled 4 on that album, especially. The song is such that if you're in a good mood, it will make everything 1,000 times more beautiful, and if you're in a bad mood, it will make you want to cry.

Elliott Smith's music, Beck's album Sea Change, and Nick Drake's album Pink Moon are sad in a sort of personal suffering way.

Some individual sad songs are:

Your Hand in Mine by Explosions in the Sky
A Thousand Paper Cranes by Mono
Asleep by The Smiths
New Slang by The Shins
