Shooting at U.S. Embassy Syria, explosions heard
11:43 | 12/ 09/ 2006

DAMASCUS, September 12 (RIA Novosti)-The U.S. Embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, appears to have been attacked Tuesday morning.

A series of explosions followed by gunfire rocked the Syrian capital, Damascus, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported from the city, and a policeman standing at a cordoned off area said the shooting had happened at the American diplomatic mission.

The district houses many missions, but the Russian Embassy is located in a different part of the city.

The gunfire has subsided since the incident was first reported at just after 10 a.m. local time (6 a.m. GMT), the correspondent said.

Syria 'foils' US embassy attack

A burnt out car was removed from the scene of the clash
An attack on the US embassy in Damascus has been foiled by local security forces, Syrian officials say.

At least three assailants tried to drive a car at the embassy compound but were killed by guards, officials and eyewitnesses said.

One report says they blew the car up amid exchanges of gunfire. There are no reports of American casualties.

Security forces have sealed off the Rawda area, which houses other embassies and security installations.

"A terrorist operation targeted the US embassy. Security forces have brought the situation under control.

"Three terrorists were killed and one was wounded," said Interior Minister General Bassam Abdel Majid on state television.

Damascus has seen sporadic unrest in recent years, including a suspected attempt to bomb the Canadian embassy.

Ambulances and fire engines were seen rushing to the area through the mid-morning traffic.

Heightened tension

Syria is an authoritarian state where the security forces exert tight control on the population and the media.

A BBC correspondent in the region says the reported attack comes at a time of heightened tensions between the Washington and Damascus, with bitterness in Syria over US support for Israeli military action in Lebanon.

The US accuses Syria of supporting the insurgency in Iraq and not doing enough to prevent weapons going to Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

This is why they have Marines at Embassies. We'll be getting a brief about this incident sometime this week. I will guarantee you that.

Anyone remember the attack in Jeddah about a year and a half ago? Or the constant trouble in Monrovia, Liberia about 2 and a half years ago?

My bus driver was an embassy security guy for awhile, he was cool as hell, was a real estate agent and drove busses to school and donated his checks from that to the American Cancer Society. Anyways, he said he passed the Army sniper training and was stationed at an embassy for awhile.

Scary stuff, I wouldn't want to be holed in an embassy...

Thumbs up to the Syrian guards. Wouldn't have expected them to actually defend us.

To make more sense of this could you kindly help me out by providing the "whens" of your post? :)

My bus driver: When?

was an embassy security guy for awhile: When?

Anyways, he said he passed the Army sniper training and was stationed at an embassy for awhile: When?

Sorry, this might be old news to many here, but I have no idea when you rode a school bus; were you an elementary, secondary, high school or college student? I don't know if you were here in the USA or abroad. I don't have much info by which to fully appreciate what may be a very interesting insight of yours.

Respectfully yours,
