They could do like Microsoft does, and after they launch the PS3, wait for everyone to complain about it, claim they're going to fix it, and then claim the 150 billion people affected by overheating is small in comparison to the total number of people that bought the console. Later, they'll fix it in a recall and replace whatever $.50 part is causing their consumers so much of a headache.
They could do like Sony always does, and claim the heat is a feature. The 'feature' keeps peoples minds off other console problems, like discs flying out of the console, or seriously long loading times, DRE problems, or just some demo disc that ends up clearing out all the saved info on your memory card. Or they'll just claim we're using the console wrong; "it's not a gaming machine, it's an entertainment machine."
Or, they could do like Nintendo, and milk the console for all its worth, and then release a new portable, or re-release the same portable with a cool new design. By the time the portables spark is gone, they can make the PS4, or make a PSP with 2 screens!

well according to a Sony spokesman:
Approximately 200 PS3 units were clustered close together and placed in small kiosks.According to Kato, overheating problems are common at trade shows, and the issues observed were "not a problem with the PlayStation 3 unit itself." He maintained that "for a normal player at home, there shouldn't be any problem."

Sony really isn't known for making products that shut down when they overheat.

Anyway, anyone who overclocks PC hardware knows that prolonged overheating can permanently damage hardware. Also, the problem isn't with the heat, the problem is with the fact that overheating causes glitches in a game. I don't know about you, but I don't want to spend $600 on a console that's prone to glitching.
