I know there are a few threads already but I checked the first page and I couldnt be arsed to search any more...

Anyways, I've heard a lot of people mention them and I've heard YYZ and liked it. Where should I go from here?

Feel free to discuss anyhting about them in general here though.

Unfortunately my Rush collection is pretty much shit. I really need to get more of their stuff.

Check out good prog rock, not Rush. That's where to go next.

Yes, 2112 is a very very good start, as well as Moving Pictures.

Even though I'm pretty sure they're out of print, but for a greatest hits collection, I recommend Retrospective Vol. 1 and 2. If you can't find these, then The Spirit of Radio: Greatest Hits will have to do justice.

As for Live Albums, I recommend Exit Stage Left and Rush in Rio.

All the World's a Stage is a great live album. Lakeside Park is my favorite song by them.

If you like YYZ then you should probably check out the rest of the Moving Pictures album first, as that's the album YYZ is from. Red Barchetta & The Camera Eye (both from Moving Pictures) are well worth listening to.

As far as other albums go; Permanent Waves is the album that sounds most like Moving Pictures, although Moving Pictures is a sort of transitional album between their prog rock 70's albums and into their synth driven 80's albums.
Permanent Waves also has elements of both, but is far less reliant on synths for their sound, and every track is a winner.
The further back in time you go with Rush albums the more proggy they become, with the exception of the first album, which is more hard rock than prog. 2112 is probably their stand-out 70's album, although they're all worth listening to. My favourites are Fly By Night and A Farewell to Kings along with 2112.
The 80's albums (Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, Presto) feature more synths and sound effects, and are notable for being less guitar driven.
The 90's albums (Roll the Bones, Counterparts, Test for Echo) are more of a return to Rush's hard rock early years only with a far more complex sound.
The live albums are all pretty good, although Exit... Stage Left is my favourite - it's sort of like a 'best of' Rush's early years and features an awesome rendition of YYZ with a blinding Peart drum solo thrown seamlessly in. All the Worlds a Stage is quite raw sounding, A Show of Hands showcases their 80's albums and so on.

I'd go with Permanent Waves next though, it's probably their best album.

Well, the suggestions have already been made, so I won't make any more. But my favourite Rush albums are Moving Pictures, 2112, A Farewell to Kings and Signals.

But most Rush albums are awesome.

I actually really like Vapor Trails unlike almost everyone. 2112 is just awesome though.

Dammit. I hate when YYZ is the first Rush song someone hears. It gives the wrong impression of them.
Pretty much anything of their's is good, but browse around. They're sound definitely varies over the 30-something years they've been around so you're bound to find something you like.
I recommend pretty much all their music, but especially the live albums. Get any of them and definitely check out the Rush in Rio DVD.

Thanks guys, yeah I noticed how everything else is completely different to Yyz. Got Moving Pictures and 2112. Not sure I like much of it though. Its ok, the drummings great but I'm not sure if it's worth listening to.

I would say a lot of their stuff takes a couple of listens to really appreciate it, especially 2112 (the song by itself really, though the rest of the album is good too).

I got 2112 and A Farewell to Kings as my first two albums by them and I thought that didn't really like the song 2112 (the entire thing, I liked the first two movements) until I listened to it for a while, but A Farewell to Kings I thought was really good.

I'm a huge prog rock fan, and almost nothing by Rush is appealing to me. Maybe it's because they suck, maybe because they're Canadian, but most likely both.

I'm actually listening to YYZ live on Youtube right now. My dad's Rush collection (I have none of my own) is pretty much just 2112, Chronicles, and Spirit of Radio: Greatest Hits. 2112 is my favorite.

That's strange, but I guess it's just taste. I can understand the vocals getting on people's nerves, but I can't get enough of Rush.

Having said that, I prefer Camel and King Crimson to all other prog rock bands.

I'm intrigued this so-called Camel. Any album recommendations?

Awesome symphonic prog band - and the main influence on Mikael Akerfeldt.

For starters, I'd probably listen to Mirage and Moonmadness. I started out with one of their weaker albums (Stationary Traveller), but still liked it a lot.

We haven't got enough Camel heads on this forum - I think there's only tripb19 and Rev'd_Flasher.

Heh, I'm definately getting there. :bigwink:

So far, I took your recommendation on "The Snow Goose" and then quickly picked up "Mirage". I've heard Moonmadness is really good. I'll probably have to get that one pretty soon.

Oh, and I can definately hear the inlfuence it had on Opeth.

As far as Rush goes, I really need to get some more of their albums.
