Troll metal

Troll metal deals with elements of Norse mythology, particularly trolls, goblins and the like, in a way similar to Viking metal (but with the focus on the villains, rather than the heroes, of Norse mythology). Some troll metal bands, such as Finntroll, use elements of folk music, which leads some to classify them as folk metal. Troll metal sometimes contains some anti-Christian themes, similar to Black or Pagan metal, although it is not always as serious- for example, the Finntroll album Midnattens Widunder.

So is this like WoW metal?

How about don't worry about it if you don't listen to it. And that list is full of gay made-up things.

Black metal
Death metal
Doom metal
Folk metal
Gothic metal
Heavy metal
Power metal
Progressive metal
Thrash metal

I don't recognize symphonic, speed or viking metal as genres unless paired with another genre and thus I removed them from the list. There you go though, that is what I would call the actual genres of metal.

EDIT: lolz Ok, they're gone. :p

Well, celtic music is a folk music, so it would fall under the category of folk metal. The Lord Weird Slough Feg has celtic influences, but that's the only one I can think of right now.

Black metal
Death metal
Doom metal
Folk metal
Glam metal
Gothic metal
Heavy metal
Industrial metal
Metalcore
Nu metal
Power metal
Progressive metal
Thrash metal

I'd take out industrial, glam, nu, and metalcore because they're more of metal influenced style rather than an actual branch of true metal. I agree with the symphonic and viking statement.

A mixture of hip hop, grunge, and electronic music that has been "heavied up". Bands like Korn and Linkin Park.

Wikipedia has user-submitted content. It's a nice site for general facts, assuming of course the submitter cites a reliable source, but when it comes to things like music genres a person can add pretty much whatever the hell they want. If I record myself shouting and banging on my knees with my hands and call it rawcore I could get my own page on Wikipedia.

lol I know what it is. I just meant in terms of the archetype genres. Rock, metal, rap, etc.

Why are you complaining about metal subgenres when electronica has many more? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_music_genres)

Your anti-metal attitude is getting kinda annoying.

Some of those metal genres aren't even valid - and if they are, they're only valid on a small scale. Rapcore can be put under nu-metal. Stoner metal is usually put under doom metal. I put troll metal under viking metal. I've never heard of Celtic metal. I combine speed and thrash. Epic metal is a stupid idea for a genre. Arcturus is epic. So are Behemoth and Candlemass, but you don't see anyone calling them epic metal. And I'll stop there.

Point being, just because someone mentions a genre doesn't mean it is suddenly a genre of metal.

So, what's everyone's favorite song off the Black Album? I know, it's tough to choose just one.

My Friend of Misery takes it. They should have made it an instrumental though.

Constantly arguing about genres, what defines genres and then what bands belong to which genres makes me laugh.
Genre arguements have to be the most pointless discussion in the history of music forums. And here's why:

Motorhead have, over the years, been classed as heavy metal, speed metal, and just about every other metal genre under the sun. And yet Lemmy has stated ad nauseum when asked, that Motorhead play rock 'n' roll.
So who's right? The genre freaks? Or the guy that's playing the music, because he should know, right?
Secondly, who the fuck cares? The only thing genre classification is good for is making it easier for people to hate on bands they don't like by classifying them into another genre that doesn't include their favourite bands.

Sure, you can use genre labels to loosely describe a particular band's sound, but does any band fit rigidly into any one particular genre? I don't think so.
Music by its very nature is progressive, and just about every band's sound progresses from one album to another, so trying to fit something that's constantly evolving into a neat square box is an exercise in futility.

Oh, and Holier than Thou.

Exactly. People forget that subgenres should be used for a vague description. Yes, Blind Guardian sounds different from Sabaton, but they're both still power metal. If you want to use a whole bunch of crazy adjectives, write an essay on the band.

I don't see the big problem with genres. Maybe it's because I'm not a genre nazi nor do I know any in real life. If I know I love Band A, and Band A is labeled as a certain genre, then I know to check out other bands in that genre. At least I know I'm hunting for stuff that I know I like. Not saying that I'll like every band in that genre or that I won't give anything a try that's in another genre, but at least it's a good starting point. I think it would be harder to find bands that I like if it was all just "metal" or "rock and roll"
