Is Microsoft's Xbox 360 about to massively undercut Nintendo Wii by going on sale for $100 on Amazon? It sounds like total and utter hogwash from where I'm standing, but TechCrunch's Michael Arrington swears that it came from "a rock solid source."

The day that even the Core 360 sells for $150 less than a Wii is the day that I go and buy Hitch on Blu-ray. But here's the word straight from TechCrunch:

If you are thinking of buying an Xbox 360 in the next few days, don’t. We’ve gotten information that Amazon may be putting the $300 Xbox 360 bundle on sale for $100 in the next week or so as a promotional move for the holiday season. We don’t know if this will be limited to the Xbox or will include other items, or exactly how many will be put on sale - but it came from a rock solid source.

Microsoft is already taking a massive loss for every unit they sell as is. So this would be a textbook example of cutting off one's nose to spite their face. Naturally, treat this as rumor until we report otherwise.

This is hard to believe, but it would be cool. I'd buy it.

I think they're putting the original Xbox on sale, not the 360. That's what I heard.

Second place I've seen this pop up.

If only... I'd get it. MS is planning to cut off production of the core system soon, this might be a way to get the last few out the doors and try to get more people buying games.

Of course, a more likely scenerio would be it being the original XBox on sale for 100 bucks.

Nintendo is just saying that so that you WONT go buy your xbox 360, and will "Wait" for nothing. Thus, buying them time for the Wii to come out, and for you to buy it.

But I can totally see this being where the rumor came from. Just seems that a "rock solid source" would have their facts straight.

100 dollar rebate would be nice, but it's not worth flying to California to buy a new xbox.
