From what I've heard, no. You can brick it, and turn it into, well, and expensive paperweight. I've considered it, and weighed the good and bad.
I decided not to, ultimately.

I have 2.6 and I have heard the only way to downgrade that is to use the GTA game for it but I have no idea how to pull that off.

I downgraded when I first got it. 2.0 --> 1.5 and everything worked fine. Homebrews are awesome you can do a hell of a lot with it. But then I upgraded to 2.8 for some reason, and now I'm waiting for the next downgrader to come out.

you can download if u have 2.71 or below. Make sure you dont have a ta-082 or ta-086 though because if you do u will have a definate psp shaped brick.

Ok, I checked I have the ta chip er whatever. Is there a way or way in the future Id be able to get around that without fucking it up?
But I'd downgrade it for some homebrew.

currently people all over are trying to bypass ta-82/6 but nothing so far. In the near future hopefully. go to pspupdates.qj.net for up to date news everyday. I just read that a new eloader came out that supposively has homebrew for 2.80.
Homebrew is why anyione would downgrade. I use it more than i do anything else on the psp.

There's a chance to brick the PSP everytime you access the flash memory. Basically everytime you upgrade the firmware, theres always a chance to brick it. Downgrading shouldn't be a problem but I heard there was this 2.7b thing which can do what 1.5 does.
Oh I have a PSP aswell on 2.7, not upgrading or downgrading just leaving it as it is.

1.5 or 2.71 B are the greatest firmwares. Personally i like 1.5 best because i can use a homebrew called devhook that emulates 2.71 so i can have all those features and still use homebrew. And yes it is possible to brick everytime you access flash but with most downgraders and upgraders it is hard to brick unless you are a complete idiot.
