View Full Version : Resistance: Fall of Man

On the exterior, Fall of Man doesn't look all that different. Take a few steps away from your television with squinted eyes and you could mistake it for Call of Duty or Medal of Honor. But do yourself a favor, open those peepers up and step towards the screen because Resistance doesn't pay homage to World War II... it attempts something on a scale of much larger proportions.

It's July 1951, and the mysterious "Chimera" has overrun Europe. Originally having conquered Russia in the '30s, the bizarre alien race has moved westward to infect the entire European continent with a virus that transforms its people into ugly gun-wielding monsters. Sure World War II never happened, but humanity's cities still fell -- replaced by the rubble of what came before it and giant tower-like structures of unknown origin. In the midst of this mess players assume the role of Sergeant Nathan Hale, a tough-as-nails American soldier that joined Britain's final defense effort. But what secrets is Hale hiding and more importantly, what Chimeran secrets will he help the British uncover?

And so begins Fall of Man's overarching storyline; a narrative that benefits from talented voice actors, multiple in-game cutscenes, and a series of old-school "freeze frame" transitions. Though there aren't too many surprises to be found across the game's 20-plus chapters, the plot still plays out well and has interesting, albeit few, main characters. It's likely that by the time you get to the end of this 12-15 hour experience, it was because you were compelled to find out what Hale and the Chimera were really all about... even if the story's ending is a little unclear and open-ended.

Closing Comments
But let's be honest, Resistance doesn't have to be perfect to be fun, and fun is exactly what it is. From start to finish, Fall of Man is one hell of an outstanding roller coaster ride that every last PS3 owner needs for day one. Epic boss battles (the final few are crazy!), ever-changing scenery, addictive weaponry, and a unique thematic are just a few of the reasons Resistance stands out. But above all else, it's the multiplayer elements that truly ascend this one to the next level. It's a must have for sure.

While the single-player game is good, multiplayer is likely to be what's most fondly remember about Resistance in years to come. To say it's big would be an understatement. With 40 player support, more than a half-dozen game types, the ability to play as humans or Chimera... I could go on and on. The point is that it's fun as hell and should keep us all glued to our systems for weeks if not months.

Seems like a rather quiet Playstation 3 Launch title has proven itself quite well ... decent. Discuss.

Oh and

9.0 Presentation
Insomniac has created a compelling mythos and the unique blend of World War II-level battles with alien technology is a great mix. Expect load times only at the beginning of stages.
8.5 Graphics
A mix of 20th century war machines and intergalactic alien hordes makes for quite the interesting art style. A solid 30fps framerate and plenty of bells and whistles easily impress.
8.5 Sound
When connected to a capable speaker, Resistance will blow your speakers to kingdom come with great audio effects and stellar voice acting. Don't expect to hear much musically, though.
9.0 Gameplay
Experience the best weapons to come along in a shooter for quite some time united with challenging enemies, tight control, smooth online play, and insane boss battles. Seriously fun.
9.5 Lasting Appeal
Between 12-15 hours of single-player action, multiple (and very challenging) difficulty levels, four hidden weapons, unlockable secrets and skill points, and a ton of multiplayer options. Hot!

GOW's 8 player mode helps make matches more faster and thrilling. And Resistance is sounding like another battlefield except with high tech weaponry. But I won't know anything for sure till i've played it.

sounds awesome. Not awesome enough for me to fork out the cash for a PS3, but at least PS3 owners will have something good to play

It doesnt interest me much. Many of the launch titles dont...I'm waiting for some of the later titles...

Either way, I'm not buying any next gen system...I just play them for free at work, and we'll probably get this one. I'll try it out when I can and let you guys know.

Where do you work?

I work at a LAN center...kinda like a modern arcade. You pay for a number of hours to put on your account, and you can play with our 360's, xboxes, ps2s, nice PCs, etc...We have the 360's set up to 1080i 42 inch hdtvs....and 19 inch flatscreen moniters for the PCs, etc....really awesome place to work, and I get to play everything for free!:bigwink:

God, I love my job...

There is a pretty large LAN center by my house, and I have always wanted to work there.

resistence has medicore graphics with butt ugly textures, and what looks like to be mildly fun gameplay, one of those, play for about 1 hour and play it later. Though i also have heard there's little to no lag on the 40 person.

Wait for the North American release to get the reviews in, gamerankings has a nice average, and so far there are only 3 reviews for it, it's definately a mid 8's game, which isn't bad.

but man this looks bad. well as long as it's fun, i'd give it a try, but...no way am i buying a ps3 till i see a big price drop, and with how little are being shipped, i'm guarenteed no friends will have it.

Eeww, that's fucking ugly...Killzone ugly.

And this got a 9.0 for Graphics, while GoW got a 7.5 for replayability? IGN need a kick up their arse when it comes to reviews.

I still see it as a generic FPS with guns that would of never been possible in WWII...It's CoD2 meets Bugs Life.

Huge difference between GoW environments and Resistance environments. They seem much more open in Resistance, so naturally it won't have the detail of GoW close-up. Metroid Prime looks amazing for a last-gen game because it's all closed-off hallways. And Resistance sounds quite a bit deeper than Gears. Gears was a good game with an amazing hype machine behind it. Cliffy B? Come on now. This shit is turning into Hollywood.

Resistance has been the most hyped PS3 game so far, so it wasn't exactly being ignored. It is considered PS3's Gears or Zelda.

I'd still rather play Battlefield.

This game got absolutely slated in this monthes Edge mag. " In its current form, it could actually be the last thing Sony needs: a predictable slog, withPS2 written all over it". And....."as you butt into its surfaces and characters with wild analogue thrusts, the games world not only moves like that of a PS2 shooter before your eyes, but buckles further beneath the weight of expectation....."

Does sound great, does'nt it? :uhoh:

IGN's PS3, Xbox 360 + Wii Reviews are done by certain teams.

You have 1 team for each Console...There's room for Biased Reviews.

And you can't count things like MGS4, Motor Storm, Final Fantasy or GT. Resistance is the only thing that the PS3 has right now, while the Wii has LoZ:TP and WiiSports to name a few. I would include the 360's Titles but it's kind of unfair after a years launch, but we're all looking forward to Halo 3, Halo Wars, Halo "PJ Project" so we'll have to make deal with GoW, Dead Rising and Viva Pinata.

Why do you think there's a Thread for it here? Oh yes, because you created it out of Hype.

I factored in the rest of the reviews are saw this as quite a biased hateful review, and yes i didnt ignore it, i read it however i disagreed with it on account that much more reliable sources have rated this game alot better.

Secondly i have no offical article about this, for all i know it could be some guy who got raped by a ps2 (<cough>wii60<cough>).

Of course, there are actually people that love Diablo 2.

Apparently repititious boredom can be good.

Oh, and the game looks decent, like the whole alien vs. WW2 vets thing.
