I love them, but I'm pissed that not many people know them. I'm slowly spreading the faith. If you havent listened, check them out. I hope you wont be disappointed.

They remind me of Symphony X. However, I think Dreamtheatre started playing music before they did.

Dream Theater is by far my favorite band, other bands are good, even amazing, but DT is godlike.

I love 'em too, and I think they're generally famous in metal circles.

I used to be fanatical about Dream Theater. Nowadays, eh. I like them but I'm not so big on progressive metal in general anymore.

They have inspired me more than any other band, and I love their music dearly, but I think Portnoy is a tool for letting his influences getting in the way of other members' creativity.

What do you mean?

Preventing Myung/La Brie/Ruddess from having musical input on 8vm and making 1 track sound like a blatant U2 rip-off and 2 tracks sound like blatant Muse ripoffs because they are/were the bands Portnoy was currently listening to.

They're pretty talented musicians, but I find their music to be SUPER boring.

When I first listened to DT I thought they sucked and that guys voice was annoying, Now I think they are just amazing musicians, I've only heard 2 of their albums but i'm looking forward to getting more of them.
Fuck, I'll listen to DT right now.

They're one of the most musically versatile bands in the history of music, how can people not know of them? I dont know if this is true but if it is, that's just wrong.

I just introduced this kid at work to them. He's already a Rush and iron maiden fan, so i told him to sit back and hold on. I played This Dying Soul for him. He was in utter shock.

Mmm, I like Dream Theater.

Petrucci can go a bit over the top at times, but they're seriously a good band.

They're pretty good. Dream Theater is what happens when you combine monstrous musical talent and creative genious with bitchy vocals. There's tons of bands out there like this.
Musically speaking, and in terms of talent and capability, the whole band is fuckin incredible. But very often they tend to over-do it and it seems like they're trying too hard, like they're just saying "Hey! Look what I can do!". But they are amazing when it comes to writing complex and very technical music. It can just get boring after a while.
I prefer Liquid Tension Experiment. It's got the over-the-top complex virtuosic music like Dream Theater, minus the winey singing.

I took me a while to get used to LaBrie, but I think he's great now. His on-stage performance needs to improve. Maybe he should go hang out with Ted Nugent for a week.

^I think his brother's opinion is pretty much right on the money. Seperately, everyone in DT is fuckin amazing at what they do. Together, it's like everyone of them is trying to out-shred the others and it all just turns into a fairly boring wankfest.

Plus Tony Levin. :D

Do the people who call Dream Theater over the top realize that most of their songs employ pnly a few moments of virtuosity and the rest is just very music and emotional songwriting?

So, would you just kinda sit around and play power chords if you had the ability to play some crazy virtuoso shit?

When I say Petrucci sometimes goes over the top, I don't mean he plays crazy virtuoso shit, because there are different types of virtuosos. I mean that I think he sometimes plays for technicality's sake. Nevertheless, it doesn't bother me much, it's not too common and I don't resent him for it. DT does write good music in my eyes and I like DT a fair bit.

Just because I could shred at an unreasonable pace doesn't mean I would. Technicality isn't the be all and end all. But just because you're not playing crazy virtuoso stuff doesn't mean that you have to play power chords - that's a bit of a drastic oversimplification of music.

I'm not saying technicality is bad either - but technicality for the sake of technicality isn't particular great.

Yeah, i dont play full strength 100% of the time. I mean, Petrucci has gotta make some of DT's music playable by others...

Dream Theater are an embarrassment to King Crimson, Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, and the other bands they supposedly model their music after.

IMO dream theatre is great at playing their instruments.. no one is denying that... but they fail to make music that is full of emotion and atmosphere. they've also never made a song that is honest and personal. on one of their songs they attempted to be melodramatic, honest and personal and it came off as being embarrasing. it sounded like it was made for a 14 year old girl and written by a 14 year old boy. sometimes i get the feeling that some of their songs are merely platforms for them to shred on. playing as many different guitar notes as you can within a solo does not make good music.

You're entitled to your opinion. But I am curious about which song you heard that you thought was embarrasing and melodramatic. I think most of their songs are honest and emotional, just not in the sense that most traditional music is. Thats what prog rock is about, having to look deeper than what we are used to when it comes to music. This applies to the melodies, rhythms, techniques, and the lyrics as well. We can all agree that music that is just showing off skill kind of sucks. Dream Theater has been around for 20 years, they would have faded with the 80s if that was all they were about. It has to be about more, its about the songwriting and musicality!

I don't know about that, i'm listening to Take away my pain right now, and it has no crazy guitar at all, and it is one emotional song.

people who say that really haven't looked at more than a few of DT's songs.
