so i played nhl 2007 for 360 on an hd tv at some store today. was blown away by the gameplay/graphics. so the question is, do i need an hdtv to enjoy the 360? how big is the difference to a normal tv. thanks.

Well ... the normal tv is well smaller?

Well, the graphics aren't going to be as well defined on a tube tv. For example, let's take Dead Rising. On a normal (tube) tv, the characters look alright. You can make out what they're supposed to be fine. Backgrounds don't really pop out all that much, etc. Now, on an HDTV. You can see the stubble clearly on the main characters face. The background is crisp, and you can read the text on posters, stores, etc.

So it's really just a personal preference. I love my HDTV, and it makes every game I have just that much more atmospheric.

If you enjoy the game play, then it doesn't matter a whole lot. But there is definitely a noticeable difference between 1080i and 480i. If you enjoyed the HD at the store, you will think the SD looks shitty by comparison.

Well size is the only difference your going to notice, instead of writing been this big it will be this big and of course with that you will lose some detail.

I have my 360 Set-Up in my "Gaming Room", where the only TV is a 12 year old, 15 inch Alba Set. Gears of War is just fucking beautiful on the thing and I can only imagine how great it would look on a HDTV.

Moral of the Story is. Gaming in 1080p is just a nice add-on.

Wow xeoset are you saying that if a game looks good on a small tv it will look better on a larger tv?

I notice a big difference. But the graphics are still awesome even on a normal tv. Most games, like dead rising were designed with only high def in mind when it was created. I read this in reviews but didn't think too much of it until I bought the game and trying playing it on my tv. I've got a 36 inch tv, which isn't all that big, but the words on the screen were so small that you could barely make any of it out which made playing the game just totally suck...almost impossible. My solution to this was my LCD computer monitor. I bought the optional HDMI cable for the 360 and just plug into my pc monitor, now I can play the games in the highest resolution. Plus I'm like 2 feet away from the screen so it doesn't seem small at all. The only thing that sucks about doing that is constantly switching cables back and forth.
Anyway, it is a noticable difference, but you'll be pretty suprised by how good the tv still looks.

You do realise 1080p is a High Definition Picture right?

Somthing a 15' CRT can't do?

well it depends on how good the game looks, 1080i is absolutely MUCH better than standard def, but games like gears of war look absolutely amazing in standard def, but when you make the leap to HD, you won't want to go back.

there's no such thing as an HDMI cable for 360, i wish so fucking worthless hollywood movie companies wouldn't screw me with copyright bullshit.

anyway, i think you mean VGA.

HDTVs look awesome just in general. Try and get an LCD HDTV because Plasmas have a really short lifespan before they start fading.

Does someone want to explain to me the difference between 1080i, 480i, 480p and all that? And what cables and stuff you need for them?

Is this where component and composite cables come in for games?

size has nothing to do with HDTV. i have a 36 inch normal tv but my friend has a 27 inch HD tv.

the only game I've played in hd is oblivion.....most, in fact all of my gaming is done on a $150AUS (about $110-$120USD) 51cm sdtv.

one thing i noticed about ob is lighting and shadows and reflections look way better in hd. things like water and clouds look amazing in that game. still good though in sd. i have splinter cell (which isnt really that great graphically) and gears waiting for me under the christmas tree and i cant wait to see what they look like on the 42" hd
