Sony is delivering the ultimate Christmas gift to Japan this year: a free demo of Gran Turismo 5, set for download starting December 24 exclusively via the PlayStation Store. Thanks to Famitsu, we were able to relive our childhoods and get a sneak peak at the gift in advance.

According to the latest issue of the magazine, the demo, titled Gran Turismo HD Concept, will ship with one course and ten cars. The course is the all new Eiger Nordwand, and you'll be able to race it normal and reverse.

The car list has mostly Japanese vehicles, but there are some high profile foreign models in the bunch. Here's the full list:

# Suzuki Cappuccino '95
# Mazda Eunos Roadster '89
# Honda Integra Type R'04
# Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV GSR'96
# Infinity G35 Coupe
# Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR'05
# Lotus Elise 111R'04
# Nissan Sky Liner GT-R V Spec II '94
# Toyota Celica GT-FOUR Rally Car '95
# Ferrari 599'06

It's stupid that the download will be for Japanese customers only.

Personally I lost interest in the GT series after GT2. The AI sucked. They ALWAYS drive in single file, following the exact same driving line, and never pass each other. I remember reading one review on GT4 where the reviewer didn't touch the controller during a race and parked his car at the starting line. What did the computer do when it tried to lap him? IT REAR ENDED HIM, because he was on the pre-scripted driving line. That's a good sign of a crappy AI.

Also the cars need damage models like Forza. People always said 'oh the manufacturers won't allow licenses if their cars in GT look crumpled' which is a bunch of BS. The only reason they haven't added damage modelling is because it takes a lot of work.

Damage, better AI, online capabilities, and better graphics... people have been asking for that since GT2, and the only thing that really improved was the graphics.

GT4 was terrible. Probably the easiest racing game I've ever played. They need to make it harder to earn money and come up with new tracks. I know they're supposed to be real tracks, but they've been using the same ones since the first game. I'll stick with the Burnout and Need for Speed titles unless they ake some big improvements.

Gran Turismo is a horrible game. There are tons of racing games far better than that junk. If you want a similar game that is actually fun to play, buy TOCA Race Driver 3 for PS2.

Gran Turismo is not only one of the best selling games for the PS2, and was the best selling game for the original Playstation, but it is the most realistic driving simulator game there is, and hosts the most cars. The physics are better and more realistic than any other racing game, and it has more cars than any other racing game there is, with over twice as much as Forza's.

What you are probably looking for it more of an arcady racer like NFS or PGR. If you are an enthusiast, and love cars, and are in it for the driving, Gran Tursmo is unbeatable.

I cant wait to see it on the PS3 in action...

BTW, I cannot believe you think TOCA is even in the ranks of GT...

I tried downloading this today but it didn't work. I managed to download the demos for MotorStorm and Resistance though.
