The slasher flick is set to open on Christmas, much to the horror of some Christians, who are calling for a boycott of the movie.

“It’s a disgrace,” said Michele Combs, director of communications for the Christian Coalition, based in Washington, D.C. “The movie industry has really gone too far, and we are sending out an e-mail asking people to discourage others, especially young people, from seeing it.”

A remake of the 1974 horror classic, “Black Christmas” features the slicing and dicing of sorority sisters on Christmas break and stars Michelle Trachtenberg (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), Katie Cassidy (David’s daughter) and Oliver Hudson (brother of Kate). The movie, whose trailer plays the hymn “Silent Night” while blood flies, features the tagline: “the ultimate slay ride.”

“It’s another strike against Christmas,” said Robert Marley, co-founder of the Coalition to Save Christmas in Massachusetts (www.savingchristmasinmass.homestead.com). “It’s in bad taste. Not only dooes it send a bad message, it’s the further degradation of our holiday.”

Marley won’t make an issue of the movie on his Web site, however.

“Who is going to see it? It’s full of B-list actors,” he said. “It’s a joke.”

“Black Christmas” isn’t the first holiday-themed horror flick, but most Santa-centric slasher films steer clear of a Christmas Day release. The original “Black Christmas” hit the big screen Dec. 20, in deference to the holiday. Both “You Better Watch Out” (1980) and “Silent Night, Deadly Night” (1984) were released in November of their respective years, and “Silent Night, Bloody Night” hit theaters in April 1974. But Dimension Films, the distributor for “Black Christmas,” stands by its decision, saying in a statement, “There is a long tradition of releasing horror movies during the holiday season as counter-programming to the more regular yuletide fare.”

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights scored a victory last year when it forced the the retail behemoth Wal-Mart to return to saying “Merry Christmas” to customers but doesn’t want to get involved with the “Black Christmas” controversy.

“There’s not going to be a protest,” said Kiera McCaffrey, director of communications, who told the New York Daily News last week the film was “out of line.”“We’re not outraged. It’s a slasher flick. There’s no reason to get involved.”

Nonsense, said Combs.

“Christmas is one of our holiest of days,” she said. “It is galling that the movie industry would try to destroy the true meaning of Christmas by (releasing) a horror film on that day.”

Seems pretty silly to me. The movie would probably do shitty without this attention, but now people are going to want to see what the hype is about. I've never understood this kind of stuff, seems like a waste of time to me.

I love christmas, I love the festivities, I love the family togetherness and I love presents.

But I'll be sure as hell glad when it's over and all the media hype will die down for another year.

I have to agree with you entirely here, not that I don't want to. You know a lot of people think that Passion of the Christ would also have been a huge failure if it weren't for the media buzz of the protests over it.

I don't see a need to protest a movie no one should be going to see on that day anyway. I think it's more distasteful that people who celebrate Christmas would go to theaters on Christmas instead of spending it visiting with loved ones. And if people don't celebrate Christmas go see it, big fucking deal, it's not a special day to them. This dumb broad needs to stop attacking the supply and start turning on the people who celebrate Christmas that contribute to the demand instead.

“Christmas is one of our holiest of days,” she said. “It is galling that the movie industry would try to destroy the true meaning of Christmas by (releasing) a horror film on that day.”

That's right, retard...the movie industry's conspiracy plot to destroy Christmas is revealed. Christopher Reeves has fallen, now it's on to the next Christ-anything on their list. That is their ultimate goal: destroy Christmas. Heaven forbid they're just out to make a cheap buck. It has to have that ultimate moniacle and evil intent...they just dimply HAVE to be attacking Christmas...I bet she's hoping someone makes a claymation Christmas special about how she saved Christmas from slasher flicks with Rudolph, Frosty, and that gay "I wanna be a dentist" elf...maybe they could release it in theaters on Christmas.

The more they get worked up into a frenzy about this movie the more free publicity the movie gets.

I think if people ever found true happiness they wouldn't know what to do with it.

Why do we always have to find something to complain about?

Even I think these Christian groups go to far. The movie will bomb anyway. Seriously, when was the last time a horror movie did good? I suppose the Saw series is doing pretty good for itself. Horror films are a lost art. I dont really like them, except for the Dracula movies with Christopher Lee. Now that's classic!

Grow some balls ...

If you wanna see the movie go see it, if you don't wanna see it? Don't.

They can't do anything with their boycott, making a thread about it and getting all upset about it only gives them what they want and encourages them to do it more.
