"Thousands of unopened PS3s are being returned to shops across the US as eBay opportunists fail to sell their consoles online for a huge profit. This is largely thanks to Sony managing to push out a fresh batch of PS3s before the Christmas break, lowering interest in the auctions.

Canadian newspaper The Hamilton Spectator recently interviewed a number of disappointed eBay sellers who plan to return their unwanted consoles. One person adds that it'll be "the 'scalpers' who really lose out". Poor things.

Returns are so high that stores like Wal-Mart are refusing to take any more as its current stock remains unsold, according to website News0r, which also claims that "tens of thousands" of PS3s are being returned.

There're currently over 2,500 PS3 auctions running on eBay.com but, apart from one ridiculously high bidding war, many sellers are without even a single bid. One system is even selling for less than the retail price at just $475 (around £240), with no bids in place at the time of writing."

Guess noone bought them to play games. Figured as much. Europe must be fuming seeing all these PS3s coming back to stores in America while they have to wait a few more months.

Your thoughts.

This is the reason that I didn't try to scalp a PS3, everyone had the same idea after seeing the success of the 360 scalpers at its launch.

What's a PS3?

PS3 = Power Steering 3. It's a new and improved steering system for cars.

Haha, it's good that the scalpers are being refused - it's not legal to scalp tickets, but I'm not sure about consoles.

Scalping just pisses people off - people who actually WANT the product.

Yeah, the PS3 scalpers are idiots. In the Classifieds section of my newspaper has had three people trying to sell PS3's for over a month now, cheapest one being $900. No one is buying them.

Scalpers want the product too, they just want it for money instead of entertainment.

Yup, I learned my lesson from the PS2.

Still enjoyed the system, just didn't make any money.

Nope, perfectly legal. Scalpers only happen when companies drop the ball on product releases.

How are the scalpers losing, when they can return the PS3 for the same price they paid? It's like buying a lottery ticket and being able to get a full refund after finding out it's a loser.

I figured that statement meant Walmart was no longer ordering them from Sony since Walmart now has surplus stock. Walmart won't, and legally can't, refuse a return just because they already have the thing you're returning in stock.

Scalpers want the product too, they just want it for money instead of entertainment.
And that's unfair. They were available in limited numbers and there were real gaming fans who would have killed to get hold of a PS3.

Then they might miss out on that chance, because some greedy scalpers are going around buying several PS3 consoles and forcing people to pay ridiculous prices for them. It destroys the market.

I love business and have always been business inclined, but that is simply unfair.

You could argue that it's more fair. Some people are willing (and have the time) to camp out for a day or more to get such a system. Others are willing to pay double price. People place different value on their time and money.

You raise a pretty good point there actually.

Some people end up with consoles - others are less lucky. This is based on many factors like their position in the line, the town they live in etc. The people who end up with consoles aren't necessarily the people who want them the most. I guess you could argue that people willing to pay the scalpers' overblown prices are the people who are willing to spend more money because they want the consoles the most. So that is in a way giving consoles to the people who want them the most (and perhaps then deserve them more). In a sense, the scalpers are dividing the market into tiers like it should be.

But I still don't agree with it. I don't think the ridiculous prices are fair.

people say that Sony doesn't know how to distribute their products.

man, they have single-handedly taken ebay down for PS3 sales by timing all of their shipments right.

It's because it's such a fantastic, reasonably priced gaming system with many great games and innovations that consumers can't get from other systems. :wah:
