SACRAMENTO (AP) — A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

It was not immediately know how much water Strange consumed.

A preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death," said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.

"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.

Initially, contestants were handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Year of Woodland. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore," he added.

After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids."

Discuss, personally I think it's pretty stupid holding such a contest, the slogan is kind of funny though.

"Hold your wee for a Wii". Brilliant! :D

It's basically a milk chugging contest except when you lose you don't vomit you just die.
EDI: some neat stuff on drinking too much water http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperhydration

They should've did this with gatorade or something. Then you wouldn't really have to worry about hyperhydration.

Aw well, they were warned of the health risks before hand. A pretty interesting idea for a contest though.

Awsome, these new consoles are so awsome they get people killed.

Can't remember did anyone loose their life to a PS3? I remember some people getting shot?

I remember reading something about a guy and his dog getting shot after robbing a PS3 about a month ago. So you can add the PS3 to the list of "consoles to die for" :D

Some guy got shot for a PS3 at launch by a shotgun. The funny thing is while he was bleeding on the floor he said "Save the PS3!", turns out he was just gonna scalp it and his hospital bills ended up being way more than the money he got from his PS3. The story is somewhere on Gamespot.

I remember when my Biology professor taught me about hyperhydration...I was baffled. I think it's not really common knowledge. Sucks for this woman though...

How fucking stupid. That radio station is soo out of business.

Totally iresponsible. Drinking that much water is very dangerous. They should have limited the amount, maybe 1 gallon or something.

Wouldn't you vomit if you drank too much of anything?

When the title got cut off as "Woman dies in Wii..." I thought that it would be some freak accident with a super-intense game of doubles Wii Tennis with solid steel Wiimotes.

She died for a Wii? If you are going to kill yourself you might as well do it for the most expensive console out there.

A guy that used to go to my school robbed a guy of a couple of PS3's...when the cops showed up at his house to arrest him, he was holding a controller walking towards the door and they thought it was a gun so they shot him...

There was a whole huge controversy about it, but I side with the cops because he had a violent history and had many pictures of himself online holding illegal guns and crap...

Thats at least one death...

Very very sad. This is what happens when you these companies don't release enough product, to gain hype and peripheral sales. Of course the lady is responsible for not taking into account her health when doing this, but still really sad, and really stupid. I hope someone at Nintendo sees these reports and vomits from thier lack of good marketing. Blah blah blah, supply and demand my ass, if they released more systems, they would sell.

1. You cannot spell.
2. You've raised another old thread.
3. You have Linkin Park lyrics in your Sig.

I think it's safe to assume you don't belong here.

Since this thread has been resurrected, thought I'd mention I saw this topic on a number of other boards, and you wouldn't believe how many people were saying stuff like, "LOLZ serves her right for not knowing too much water can kill you LOZ111!!! Everyone knows if you have too much of something, it will kill you LOZ!!111 Personal responsibility and Darwinism FTW!!111"

Glad to see most everyone here knows that if a corporation holds a contest, they are legally responsible for contestants' safety.

EDIT: Cool, over 1000 posts now :D
