I'm really interested to start collecting vinyl albums. Most of it being classic rock. I was wondering if there were any members on here who collect. And also, what are some good places to look for them? Any online stores I could start at? Thanks in advance.

If you really want to expand your collection. Look around for estate sales. If you get lucky, massive amounts of records to buy for very very cheap.

I have a box of about 300 vinyls, all classic rock that are just collecting dust.

I also have about 200 different vinyl albums. Mostly gave to me by my dad. There primarily jazz and classic rock. Lots of good stuff though.

I've got a bunch, I buy them in local record stores. Old classic and prog rock stuff is usually cheap too.

Maybe try to understand someone's interest solely in the historic personal value of an interest rather than what it contains? Damn, open your mind a little bit.

yard sales though they barley ever have anything good, flee markets, and ebay is where i go. and just a regular record store if you have one around you, they almost always have used as well as new records.

Try ebay dude, that's where I've bought some before. Downsides though, you don't get to see the record, and the price may not be that great. I'd much rather shop at a store like Record and Tape Traders, but they don't have any around here.
And that estate idea is fucking amazing, thanks dude.

People like records because sometimes they're unavailable on CD and it helps REMIND them of the memories.
Also, shut the fuck up ignorant ass.
To Marshalldylan10: Try estate sales, flea markets, and second hand music/exchange stores.

Yeah, I used to collect music on vinyl, but I switched over to CD's a good few years ago, and am steadily replacing most of my vinyl collection onto CD.
As for collecting, I'd say this: pick two or three artists that you're interested in and get to know their discographies by heart and start from there. Use the magazine "Record Collector" as a guide to prices and to point out any rarities of the particular artists you're interested in, but don't treat it like a gospel.
Don't buy stuff you're not interested in just because it's rare or valuable.
Investing in good quality vinyl storage is also a good idea for your most valuable vinyl. I've lost a few boxes of vinyl in the past due to carelessness whilst moving house/water damage etc and storing vinyl correctly is also a good thing to learn. Some vinyl can be of poor quality; some vinyl from the mid 80's is manufactured incredibly thin, for some reason, and will warp easily if not cared for properly.
Oh yeah, and keep a record of what you've got, and what you want.

Also I prefer the sound of vinyl to mp3. Much better quality imo.

I know what you mean, the sound of a vinyl can't be reproduced. It's so damn unique.

Try flea markets. My hometown has a flea market a couple of times a week, plus there's one about 45 minutes from my house that I go to, as well, and I've found a lot of albums there.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I convinced my mom to give me some of her vinyls because they were just sitting in a cupboard downstairs. She has about 200, I went through them all and picked out the notables.
The Beatles-White Album
The Beatles-Let It be
The Beatles-Magical Mystery Tour
The Beatles-Abbey Road
Yes-Close to the edge
Jethro Tull-Aqualung
Iron Butterfly-In-Da-Gadda-Da-Vida
Eric Clapton-Eric Clapton
The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Smash Hits
Instead of storing them, they are all displayed on my shelfs, I might post pics sometime.
And for the guy who said it was stupid to collect music, who said I wasn't going to listen to them?
And Subin, what are some notable albums you own?

no way. vinyl is different. its retro. plus i doubt hes gonna go out and buy every vinyl he sees, hes gonna get stuff that he likes and wants. and he likes it for its content. you cant directly compare liking music to collecting music. the two are different concepts, but they do go together.
hell, im about to buy a ghetto blaster, get my cassettes out, buy some too and play 'em non stop. why? cause of how it sounds and the feel that it has to it. what casettes to buy? the ones that i like.

Ebay actually is a great way to start, if you get it off the right people. But try any just CD store, most of them will have some vynyls. But still, for the harder to find albums, just go to ebay, I got a mint condition Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Vynyl for only $10, and my local record store (I'm lucky enough to have one) said it's worth upwards to $200.
But my collection is as follows:
Dark Side Of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Obscured By the Clouds - Pink Floyd
Boston - Boston
Paranoid - Black Sabbath
Bad Company - Bad Company
The Eagles - the Eagles
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - the Beatles
Unfortunately, I can't find a record player to play any of these:wah:

I'm going to get started in that also because my neighbor has about 7,000 records and I'm buyin some off him for $1 each, the only notables I've got so far are:
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Eric Clapton - Slowhand
Led Zeppelin IV
but, its going to take a while to look through all his records
