This was on the local news last night..... (video)

February 5, 2007 - KCTV5 News Investigation

Tasers have often been at the center of controversy since police departments started using them. One man says the Independence Police Department went too far when they shocked him at least a dozen times. Is it a case of Taser torture?

I agree when you say that tazering nonviolent resisters is wrong.

We've got three issues here, IMHO.

Was the Marine involved in the fight which prompted police intervention?

Did the police use excessive force in subduing the Marine?

Are Tasers inherently bad?

The trial will determine whether he was the perp.

From the video it seems to me he was properly subdued and could have been cuffed without further Tasing. Yes. Excessive force, in my opinion. Although you never should make a judgment until all evidence is in UNLESS time or other factors don't permit getting any more evidence.

The Taser has been proven to be a fine 'less than lethal' tool for police. It seems to be an important alternative to less effective tools or more lethal tools and has undoubtedly saved thousands of perps, suspects, innocent civilians and LEO's lives. If there is a problem with the discipline of the officers or if there is a problem with their training, it must be seen as a separate issue and not be used to take this effective and indispensable tool out of the hands of law enforcement.

If there was no Taser would the Marine have been beaten like Rodney King or would he have been shot? In either event no one would be talking about removing the night stick or baton or side arm from police use. The Taser is not the problem.

Bottom line, I hope he is compensated for his pain and suffering. And if he really wasn't involved in the fight in the first place I hope he is VERY well compensated for his pain and suffering.

Off topic, but the CBS affiliate in Phoenix, AZ, has the same slogan. "Live. Late-breaking. Investigative." I wonder if that's what all CBS affiliates say.

Have to agree with eieio that perhaps is too early to pass a judgement. The media does not always report everything.

tiny update:

Just heard on the local news station that aired the investigation... that the man was tased at least a dozen times, hit once with a baton, & punched in the face once.

For once I agree with eieio, it is not the tazers fault it is the officer who is responsible for the pain inflicted. Had the officer been using a night stick in this incident the man could have suffered more lasting damage.

^^^^ I have no problems with tasers.... but only when used properly.... when used to subdue or control a threatening, violent person. Not someone who is passively refusing an order. Like the woman who was repeatedly tasered for not getting out of her car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptRZLfw2_NI Tasers are often used as punishment. I dont support that in any way. Use it as a tool to subdue someone who is threatening and/or violent.

More tasering....
