what the hell happened?

there was a soccer game, Catania vs Palermo. They're two rival teams, and there were troubles before the game. During the match, the police had to intervene, using tear gas and removing some of the supporters.

Because of that, the game was halted for 40 minutes, after which Palermo, the away team, scored 2 goals with help from the ref, winning with 1-2. The Catania fans were pissed, and once again they started to attack the Palermo supporters and the police. One police man was killed. First they said he died by a firework-bomb, but now they have arrested a 17 year old who confessed he had hit him with a lead pipe.

After the riots, the goverment decided to ban soccer from all the 'unsafe' stadiums - as if that had anything to do with people beating up each other :rollseyes

Hope that answers your question

This has been a long time coming. With the amount of racism and hooliganism at Italian football games, I'm surprised nothing worse has happened already. They need to do a shit load to that league and their fans. Add all the point shaving and shit that happened last year with the racism and hooliganism and police deaths this year...wow, what a league.

There was crowd trouble at a game last week and the crowd trouble spilled out of the stadium and eventually one police officer got killed. All the games in Italy were suspended after that point and new laws and harsher penalities were implemented. The new law says that no game can be played with a crowd until security measures are up to standards, where it can assure safety of everyone at the game. Well, only 5 stadiums meet those security standars and every game from now on will be played with 0 attendance until security measures are met. That is going to be alot of money lost for teams who don't meet the standards. They have had more than 2 years to implement more security controls, but most teams have ignored it and now they are paying the price (literally). The fans are also going to pay the price, if their teams don't inforce the security measures, they can't attend the games.

Italy has gone through a roller coaster the past year and a half. First the big scandel that Juventus, Milan and a few other teams were having their matches fixed by referees. Juventus is like the Yankees of Italian soccer and European soccer, well they got sent to the second division. That is like sending the Yankees to the minor leagues. They Italy has the best thing to happen to them, the nation wins the World Cup. The world cup means everything for a nation, especially a soccer fanatic nation like Italy. This helps people ease their pain and Italy's pain from the soccer scandel. Then this incident occurs and pretty much screws things up again. They are at a big time low once again. And the laws and penalties are very stiff, so the league and leaders are very serious about hooliganism and safety regulations by team officials.
