After enduring the silence of my dark closet during the great wars of the "next revolutions in entertainment systems" for many years, my Dreamcast finally saw the light of day this weekend. I just saw it sitting there... lonely... a small collection of games, a controller, and a VMU next to it. It was as if it were luring me in, egging me on to finally break it free after a near 4 year lock up. So I decided to put fworth the effort in wiring it up, and boy... haven't made a decision this good since choosing the red pill (Meh, fuck fighting invincible agents and saving an enslaved mankind to live in the hell whole of a year 2199).
So I decided to finish off some old priorities... Shenmue immediately among all of them. You see... I've had the game so long, and devoted so many hours to it, only to get stuck working some lame shift at some lame job in the Harbor. But I guess over 4 years time I've become a better, more sophisticated human, playing only minutes before making some desperate ground breaking progress in the story. And as things start ramping up into what I'm expecting to be a HUGE climatic ending to a historic game... Ryo simply, in such lackluster, souless style, sails off to Hong Kong. Cut - that's a rap. And I'm sitting there with a "WTF was that?!" expression burned on to my face, which still lingers now. Either I'm emotionally crushed, or I've got some problems. But either way, I'm disappointed as hell. That ohhhh... about a year of game play was molded into a huge dildo and shoved right up my ass - not even a courtesy lube squirt.
I'm especially disappointed in the makers of Shenmue after learning they spent 7 years developing the game, and had a supposed budget of 70 million dollars to make it happen. Although Shenmue was probably one of the more visually stunning and complex RPG's throughout the year of the Dreamcast (and perhaps the first year of the second generation consoles), I felt that more could've definitely been done. I mean sure, there is countless exploring to do, tons of people to talk to, lots of lively enviroments to interact with, and tons of mini games to waste hours on... but there is a certain lack of closure, depth, and well... action and excitement (story and gameplay wise).
So now I'm debating on whether or not I should buy Shenmue 2 to finish the story, because let me tell you... this cliffhanger is crippling my ability to appreciate Shenmue, as I did so many years ago. My decision on whether to like Shenmue ever again is in limbo, depedant on the quality of it's sequel.
Thoughts?
