So, the AAU just accepted my application to coach this Spring, and although I've coached AAU before, I'm really excited about this year.

The past three years I've coached various church leagues and AAU teams in Lexington, but ony from the 8-10-year-old range.

Now I'm in the basketball hotbed of Southern Indiana, and I'll be coaching 13-15-year-olds from the tradition-stacked Hoosier Hills and Mid-Southern conferences.

Kids from schools like New Albany, Jeffersonville, and the like, will be taken under my wing, where they will be molded from JV to Varsity players.

It's a great opportunity for me to get my name out there to some of the various high schools in the area, and it's always been my dream to get paid to coach basketball.

But what I'm most excited about is I get to try something I never got to try with my 8-10-year-olds, a box-and-one to triange defense.

So, if you coach basketball or any other sport, come in this thread and give us a holler.

okay well, no.you dont know how to coach, a box-and-1 is only used if there is a dominate player on the other team, it doesnt work out, its a retarded defense..just stick to 3-2 if you are going to pull that...second of all, you shouldnt be a coach, you just care about yourself "i want to get MY name out there and get paid" a coach doesnt get paid alot at all, i dont see why...

I have used a box-and-one to win two straight AAU championships. Perhaps your coaches don't know how to apply it correctly.

Also, I want to get my name out there because I love basketball. It's not all about the money.

Good to hear, Dev. My brother coaches JV and Varsity soccer. If you're anything like him, coaching an older and more athletic group will get you hooked...and maybe even a championship. So don't be ashamed about desiring make your name known, and talked about in local coaching circles because this is key to a coach's progress in most -- if not all -- cases. Success speaks for itself.

who cares, i have like 10 aau championships, an aau championship isnt a big deal...2 aau championships, gimme a break..anyone can enter a shitty tournament...

athletic teams use man, use 3-2 if there the other team has good guards, 2-3 if there is a dominate big man, triangle and 2 for two dominate players on the team...

i think the box and 1, and the triangle and 2 is just fucking stupid.. there is no help d at all

Think what you want, but AAU is supposed to be a league where coaches can change it up and use different things.

I plan on flipping the box-and-one around, and if that doesn't work, I'll try something else.

As a player, don't you appreciate a coach who tries different things?

My team won the champiionship 2 of the 3 years in 8-10 year old. We also ran a box-1 usually. The one was our point staying with the ball at all times. I like it alot better than the 2-1-2 or triangle and 2. The box and 1 worked well because the offensive plays at young ages such as the simple give and go was hard to use on it. Good luck.

as long as it works, the box-and-one never worked...our highschool coach is an idiot, i'm really hating the game because of him...but the JV coach is who should be head coach...its tourny time now and the JV coach is basiclly running the practices, he is the man, he knows what to do...it doesnt matter if he switches it up, just as long as he is a good teacher...

Box and 1 is terrific when used properly...Even if you just keep one defender on their primary ball-handler, it really fucks up their offense. My highschool team is the best in school hsitory and everyone tries weird defenses against us. We've seen it all...and almost lost to some shitty teams because of how the Box and 1 threw us off..

Triangle and 2 is retarded though...Just put the 2 guys being man-guarded down low on the block, and you've got 4 defenders on 2 guys, leaving outsid ejumpers WIDE open.

A 3-2/2-3 is best in my opinion...Gotta have a smart guy in the middle who knows when to flash to the top and when to drop down low. Especially if he's a lanky big-man. Makes it so tough for the offense to do anything.
