View Full Version : Where's the new Sim City?

Shouldn't it be time for Maxis to update the almost 4 years old game? If so then may power be on their side because they've already raised the bar high up with Sim City 4, and a revolutionary fresh Sim City 5 would be just tough. Do I smell a 64 bit game? I would imagine something like Google Earth except with today's graphics and real model building shapes and detail down to a person's daily lives, and be able to recognize them by their face. It should incorporate multi-culture detail and different countries. It should incorporate online multi-play/co-op interaction much like the Sims. It should enable plug-ins for Grand Theft Auto style game in your own created city, an airplane game from your airport, war games from your military base, street racing game on your road system, hunting in the woods, mini water/snow ski game, motorcross, fishing, adventure and such sort of game-in-a-game. The mini game should correlate to your actual city. It shall require a potent machine to run all the data, 3D rendering and be the next game that sets the new record for minimum system requirements.

I might be thinking too much, but a game like that would fucking rule.

I think Maxis is pretty busy with Spore at the moment.

This game would be basically impossible to make. I dont even think it would be that fun.

It won't be impossible to make, GTA already has a bunch of minigames and they do it just fine. I'm talking about incorporate the Sims into Sim City but have the free-roam do what u like gameplay in GTA. So it'll be like Sim City, you built an airport, so now you can go into that airport as a person and do "missions" like in GTA, except people in the airport may be other humans players. It'll be a game that you can play as a person or the person who builds the city, with other online players doing their own thing, building their own cities.

If that player decides to roll all of his military army into your city, all the sudden it's a different game. If he comes into your city as a person and killed a bunch of people, all the sudden it's Manhunt.

Simcity 5 is "in the pipeline" and initial development has started since the beginning of January. EA is also looking a new development staff for this release.

I would imagine that it will be something way different than what we have been used to since the oldschool days. EA is looking for a more broad crowd to attract, mainly because the SC fans are the same ones since oldschool and 2k; reasoning behind making a DS game. I am thinking that we will see some of the spore type interface/engine mixed in with new 3D modeling, and updated transportation, regional, and infrastructure systems, as well as an easier way to budget and run the city, because new fans that picked up SC4 did not stay attracted to the game because of city management complaints.

I for one cannot wait, I have already played out SC4.

Sim City 5 probably won't be released until late 2008. That would be my guess. It's not all bad though, Sim City 4 is still AMAZING and there are a ton of third party add-ons for it that gives the game a lot of replay value.

If you're looking for something simcity-esque to hold you over until SC5, I suggest checking out City Life. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Life_%28computer_game%29) It's not as good as Sim City 4, but it has a lot of interesting innovations (ie, roads no longer limited to a grid, fully 3d, etc).

SimCity 4 was hard as fuck... SimCity 3000, now that was a damn good game.

SimCity's too boring. I prefer The Sims.

OMGZ SIM CITIEZEZ!!!!11shift!

This brings back memories of the old games. I only played Sim City classic for like 2 minutes though. Sim City 2000 was kick ass. I made so many cities (and burnt them all down). Sim City 3000 was just so-so in my opinion. I still play Sim City 4 Deluxe. I just started a new region about a week ago and I already have a population of about 150,000. Sim City 4 is not hard as fuck as Mount Happy believes. The trick is to build a bunch of poor class neighborhoods and make a big industrial center at the corner of the city. Once its big enough set the dirty industry and manufacturing industry taxes to 20% and bulldoze your poor neighborhoods. The industry doesn't leave but still pays taxes. Depending on how long you wait you can get a lot of monthly income. Use this income to support your city till it is gigantic and then bulldoze the dirty/manufacturing sector and replace it with high tech industry.
Once Maxis finishes up with Spore I hope they start working on a Sim City 5. I hope they can do it because they set the bar for Sim Cities high in 2k and then again in 4.

So you're looking at a game that takes up what? 2 or 3 terabytes?

There is no Sim City 5, although there is that new city building game called "City Life" which the creators say should satisfy Sim City fans

THATS NOT SIM CITY.

How the hell are you trying to run a city and compete wit other citys if your fucking around commiting crimes in an airport.

Thank god your housebound and not making video games for a living.

I second City Life. If I had a better video card, I'd get it in a heartbeat. Think you can now download it off of Steam now too.

So you're looking at a game that takes up what? 2 or 3 terabytes?

I can buy a 200 gigabyte EXTERNAL hard drive for $99 brand new in BestBuy, so I imagine we'll see internal terabyte HDs for less than $300 by the middle of 2008.

Thank God you're not a real DJ cause your music sucks my left nut.

As for the city + gaming part, when you play the minigames your city does not change, thus it doesn't need management. The city requires attention only when you play the actual Sim City game. For example, you saved your city after you just built a mall, you then apply the GTA add-on then restart the game, now you can roam about your city and enter the exact mall that you just built, the city itself does not change its state while your add-on is in effect. Or, you just built an awesome 4 lane highway, you then apply a racing add-on, restart the game and now you can take your car and drive on the roads that you just built. Get it people? The city you built will only be a "background" when the mods are in effect.

IMO the next Sim City cannot be just another Sim City game, because Sim City 4 has already raised the bar way high in terms of what you're supposed to do to manage a city. It wasn't hard to me, but I've been playing Sim City games since like 6.

do you have any fucking idea how big a terrabyte is?
aside from your complete dumbshittery you have no idea about video game logistics, your talking about at least 20 different engines for one game, say for the online mode, your in a dynamic world. games cannot render at the speed of light. If you have any experience coding or mapping for games you should know that you have to compile light, shadows, collision, not to mention loading the scripts. and compiling a small map for the average game takes up to a day.

I think he knows how big a terrabyte is. What he said about 1TB drives for less then $300 is very true. Considering a 750gb HDD is only $300, a 1TB drive in 1 1/2 years will for sure only be $300.

I really don't like the idea of mini games within your SimCities. I mean, if you buy a City Sim game, you're buying it to build cities not drive cars? If you want things like that, go get Need for Speed or GTA!
