View Full Version : Better fighter: Jackie Chan or Jet Li?

So, who do you guys think is a better fighter. Not who has better movies, or who is a better actor, but if put in a real unscripted fight against each other, who do you think would win?
I think that Li would win, and actually very eaisly. If you watch and compare their fighting, you may notice the speed that Li uses. In some of his movies, they have actaully had to slow the fight scenes down a bit becasue Li would move so fast the viewer wouldnt have enough time to react. Jackie Chan (though has MUCH better movies) has a fighting skill that doesnt seem to equal Jet Li's.
Now, im not exactly sure of Chans technique, since all of his recent films in the USA have been more of a mix with fighting and comedy, but still believe Li would win.

Well you never know about his speed, he could do everything very slowly, and the director could speed up the film. *shrugs* you never know with movies these days. I voted for Jackie Chan, because he seems to have more muscles. *shrugs again* Wouldnt that make him a better fighter??

for muscles, they are pretty much equal, maybe Chan does have some slightly bigger ones. i dont really think how much that would help though...

My friend and I have often debated this topic, she always says Jet Li and I lean torward Chan. Now that I think about it, though, it would probably be pretty even..........

what would his seriosness have to do with anything? it doesnt really affect anything.
tru chris. i did csome fight scenes from the first drunken master, and he seemed to do a lot better fighting in that than the second one. there is about a 25 year difference from that to today. chan could have been more in his prime than, and lost some of his skills over that time.

Jet Li does look much better at martial arts in his films for some reason. Maybe its because he doesn't star in comedies , I don't know. But course in films they always glorify the martial art sequences. I'm not saying that Jet Li and Jackie Chan couldn't do those moves. I don't even know if Jet Li is actually a master or not.
In fact, in Kiss of the Dragon , Jet Li never used any wires or computer generating effects for his martial arts.
Once he used wires to make it look like he got sent flying up into the shelves when he squared off with the black dude and another time
it lowered him down when he was escaping the orphanage but no help for his martial arts.

That is what they did. If you watch the actor and director commentary on "kiss of the dragon" dvd, they said they had Jet Li
execute his martial arts slower than he usually does it. Then after they filmed it they sped it up a few frames.
I would like to vote for Jet Li, but Chan is older and has more experience. Although Jet Li is only 5,4 and that would give him an advange with a lower center of gravity. but who knows.
Its all about quickness, pressure point knowledge, energy conservation and adaption.

Chan would win it because he knows mixed martial arts, not just one style whereas Jet Li has some or no expeirience with mixed martial arts. Chan has trained in Jujitsu, Judo, Kung fu, karate, tae kwon do, etc....so yeah Chan has more experience in that field.

Jeet Kun Do is making a revival...I would LOVE to learn Bruce Lee's own form of martial arts...but, there are only 100 qualified senseis in the world...ya think lessons would carry a hefty price tag?
its a tough one, Li had amazing fighting techniques in "The One", but then Chan has some great moves too.
I'd have to say Jet Li, only because he is younger, and there for most likely to be more agile.

what the hell you guys thinking???
anyone who knows anything can tell jet li would kick jackie's ass (though jackie is hilarious, went to bejing opera school, had a hard life, etc., that doesn't mean that the popular one will win.... althought i cant comment on the pistons right now...) AND jet li has so much more speed, control, and his mind is sharper. jackie's muscles look bigger, but this doesn't mean he's stronger- c'mon! in troy, brad's arms were humungo, but i bet my lil cuz could whoop him in arm wrestling, one match (steroids.... *cough, cough*)
even if jackie is actually stronger, jet li's speed gives him such a huge advantage that he would win
ANYWAYS.... what the hell we talking bout them for? if only bruce lee was still alive.... there wouldn't be any thinking, polls, or voting, his win would be a shoe-in......... DUDE he's brilliant!! ahh *spazzes* have you seen enter the dragon? that thing witht he stretching is so amazing.. im working on that currently,... cant even come close to head in knees, though

Jet Li ofcouse!!! Jacky Chan is all about stunts! and in his fights he uses the surroundings alot...like climbing through bins or grabbing stuff to help him.Jet li is better all round fighter..If u guys seen the old 'Wong fei hung'(once upon a time in china??) jet li films u can tell jet li is better fighter. If they really fought in a empty room it would be pretty even match but Jet li would most likely win, unless jacky does his stunts again and find some way to climb up the walls and escape! But Jet li proberly cant do half the stunts jackie did in his time. So i guess they both good at what they do. A good fight would be jackie and jet vs bruce lee!

i like watching jackie chans fights coz they always so entertaining but recently after he came to hollywood, his movies are pretty bad cept for rush hour and shanghai noon/knights...he hardly does those crazy stunts anymore and when he fights its always aided by computer such as 'the tuxedo', 'the medallion'. I know hes getting old but he was good in rush hour 2.

My vote goes to Bruce Lee.
Let me tell you guys something. Jet Li is the better fighter hands down. Jackie Chan's fighting style is all stunt based and choreographed by movie directors/staff. However, Jet Li trained with the Shaolin Temple Monks for years before he even hit the movie screen in Asia. If you guys know what kind of training goes on there, you know how strenuous and rigiorous their style of fighting and discipline is. I believe someone posted some videos by them somewhere in the video clips forum. Jet's fighting techniques are 100% genuine wherea's Jackie Chan's are not even comparable.

Wushuography
The following is some information about Jet's training, styles he knows and his competitive career.
Jet's Coaches
Jet's primary coach was Wu Bin, who served as head coach of the Beijing Wushu Team from 1964 until the early part of the 21st century. While Wu Bin started training wushu athletes at the Beijing Sports School in 1964, the Beijing Wushu Team, as it is currently known, was not formally created until 1974. Jet, himself, started training in wushu in 1971 at the age of 8 years old.
During the early years of the team Cheng Huikun and Li Jinfeng also served on the coaching staff. In addition, many other coaches and teachers, each with their own specialty and area of expertise, visited the team to help train Jet and his teammates.
The original members of the Beijing Men's Wushu Team were Li Lianjie (Jet Li), Li Zhizhou, Li Jinheng, Tang Laiwei, Yu Shaowen, Wang Qun, Wang Jianjun, Sun Jiaming, Dong Honglin, Cui Yahui, Yang Yongli and Yan Ping. On the women's team were Li Xia, Hao Zhi Hua, Zhang Gui Feng, Wang Xiuping, Zhang Hong Mei, Ge Chunyan, Luu Yan, Hui Xuna, Huang Qiuyan, Zhou Jingpiong, Mi Jin, Huang Xiaofeng and Zhang Dehua.
Contrary to popular myth, Jet never trained at the Shaolin Temple. At the time Jet was training in wushu (late 60's and early 70's) there were no "fighting monks" living at the Shaolin Temple
Styles of Wushu
Jet specialized in the following styles:
chang quan (long fist)
dao (broadsword)
gun (staff)
fanzi quan (tumbling fist)
3-section staff
pu dao (horse chopper)
And in addition, Jet also studied the following styles (some in more depth than others).
taiji quan (the 5 main styles)
xing yi quan
bagua zhang
jian (straightsword)
qiang (spear)
zui quan (drunken fist)
tang lang quan (mantis fist)
ying zhao quan (eagle claw boxing)
zui jian (drunken sword)
shuang dao (double broadswords)
axe
battle axe
double hooks swords
fork
9 section whip
mace
hammer
talon
trident-halberd
long-handled spear
short cudgel
meteor hammer
rope dart
Competition History
The following is a brief history of Jet's wushu career:
1971: Jet begins training in wushu at an after-school program at the Beijing Sports School.
1974: Jet joins the newly created Beijing Wushu Team and begins competing on a national level.
1974: Was awarded his first Men's National All-Around Championship title at the age of 12.
1975: Men's National All-Around Championship
1976: Men's National All-Around Championship
1977: Men's National All-Around Championship
1978: Men's National All-Around Championship
1979: Retired from professional wushu competition after a knee injury where he ripped his Anterior Crutiate Ligament (ACL) doing the jump inside kick to split.
From the official Jet Li site: Jet Li.Com (http://jetli.com/jet/index.php?s=body&ss=wushuography&p=0)

Chan is all show. Everything he does looks really cool, but it is so choreographed that he would never be able to pull off half the things he does in film. Jackie Chan got his training in like a performing arts school. He was taught to perform, not to be a martial artist. Yeah he can fight and all, but its more like he was trained to be a movie star. I dont think he ever even took part in martial arts competitons or anything. Everything he ever did was for movies.
Jet Li, while choreographed in films, is a lot more realistic, and has proven through all his competitions that he can actually fight. Jet actually started out as strictly a martial artist. He had no intentions of doing films. He was dedicated to martial arts and only martial arts, and that dedication would definately give him the edge over the all-for-show Jackie Chan.

I prefer Jackie Chan movies (his older ones, news one like "The Medalion" suck) but Jet Li would kick his ass.

First, I think you have to consider them both being in their prime to make it even.
Jet Li is probably more skilled, but I would go with Jackie Chan. He can kick your ass with anything. He can kick your ass with your own shirt. I remember in one movie he kicked ass with bubbles. It would be close, but I think Jackie Chan would win.

Thats why everyone THINKS Chan is better, but all those times he uses the shirts, shopping carts, bags of flour and crap like that, its well planned, well thought out, very choreographed stuff. Chan would never be able to pull that stuff off if he was in a real fight, and he never has. Jet Li has proven through many Martial Arts tournaments that he can fight, Chan has only proven that he can fight when its all scripted out and his oppenets cant hit him back.

Bruce lee would tear anyone up. Easy. I remember on tv some guy was talking about how Bruce set his fist about 4 inches from the man's chest. Bruce then punched the man with only 4 inches to gain momentum and the poor guy flew back 3 feet to his ass. He was a God among insects.
Jet Li is a close second and Jackie Chan probably WAS killer, but he has probably been gayified with all these faggoty movies and fame/fortune.

Both are fantastic fighters. Although id say Jet Li would be even with Jackie if they were both the same age, as Jackie is slightly older.
On the other hand, i'm not sure if this is mentioned but i'd say Tony Jaa would win in a fight. He is a gold medalist at Muay Thai fighting.
He is in the film Ongbak and his new film:

But between Jackie and Jet, i would choose Jet Li because Jackie Chan's stunts are almost the same in every movies.
Jet Li. He's fuckin insane. Jackie is also REALLY good, but most of his stuff in the movies is based around comedy. In a real fight he'd probably bounce a ladder of his leg and rub it with a funny expression on his face leaving Jet Li the perfect oppurtunity to shatter his spine.

im not basing this at all on their movies although Jackie Chan does all his own stunts and he's had some badass falls that he's recovered from, but movies aside I voted for Jackie because I've read a bit on his growing up in martial arts and he knows more styles and he's been at it much longer than Jet Li. Jet Li's a badass though, but I wouldn't want to meet any of these guys in a fight.

I wonder how much of a kick ass movie it would be if Jackie and Jet would star in a movie
Jackie knows how to control it better than Jet...
Jet has been known to hurt other people on sets and Jackie has mastered controlling himself to prevent hurting other people (and he has all the bloopers to show all he went thru to make his movies!)

It's obvious that Jet Li is the better fighter. Chan was a circus guy whose first claim to fame was falling like 100 feet. Chan is ok, pretty sure he could kick the average persons ass, but not Li. Li is lightning quick and is more a fighter than an actor as his movies prove.

People seem to think that Jackie Chan is all about stunts and that's because of his movies. If you look at the training these two guys have received, Jet Li does not have an obvious advantage (as most of you point out) over Jackie.
Jet Li has mastered wushu and is very good at it as proven by his numerous victories during tournaments.
Jackie Chan has multidisciplinary training. While he did start his martial arts training in an opera school, he also received training from three kung fu masters.
In a no-rules match, Jackie being a multidisciplinary and flexible (not physically but in terms of fighting style) has an advantage over Jet Li. In a formal match where they would fight in a ring, Jet Li would win since he has experience in competitive tournaments.

Jet Li has actually fought in competitons, and won many of them. He was trained to be a fighter, not an actor.
Jackie, I believe, was trained to be an actor. He was taught in a performing arts school. He wasnt trained to fight, and I dont think I ever found any kind of information about him being in or winning any competitions (last time I looked was years ago).
Yeah Jackies moves look cooler in the movies, but that means nothing. People are like "Jackie could beat you with a garbage bag, like he did in MOVIE TITLE". But then watch the credits. They show all his bloopers. Since he screws up, he clearly CANT beat you with a garbage bag. Imagine if he had a screw up like that in a real fight. He would get his ass kicked. All his stunts are planned out and practiced over and over, and he still makes mistakes. Just think what he would be doing if he had to make it all up on the spot, without all the preperation, practice, stunt men alongside him and the knowledge that if he screws up its no big deal, they'll just shoot it again.
Fact is, Jet Li has expierence in real fight, Jackie Chan doesnt.

This thread was made in 2003, bumped in 2005, now again in 2007. Lets let it die again until 2009. QFT on the Tony Jaa part.
LOL at this thread and the replies. A lot of misconceptions are floating around. Firstly, wushu isn't a martial arts style. It's a combination of all chinese kung fu grouped. Mostly northern shaolin styles. Secondly, both men trained in wushu. A misconception is wushu's fighting functionality. It is an art-form more than a fighting-form. Unlike muay thai or its chinese counterpart wing chun, wushu is nothing more then ballet with punches and kicks.
Most importantly, the biggest misconception is these prestigious wushu titles that people believe Jet Li has earned. Yes, he has won these events and was a reigning champion. But have any of you studied wushu or been to any of these events? They aren't fighting competitions, LOL. Those wushu competitions were all DEMONSTRATION events. My high school friend who I train with currently competes in them annually at Beijing.
Jackie Chan has trained in muay thai, as well as jiu-jitsu and more FIGHTING-forms. To say one is better than the other ever without seeing any of them in a REAL fight, makes it an impossible question to answer. However, Jackie Chan has the definite size-physical advantage, both are very knowledgeable, and both have immaculate form. Still I choose Jackie Chan due to his varied range of training and well-roundedness in addition to his obvious physical advantage.

they are both good fighters, actors, etc.
but in a fight, jackie chan would defiinently win.
jackie chan fights with his own style, if he get hits, he laughs it off and gets right back up. jackie chan is def jet lis MASTER . so jet li can get on the ground and beg for mercy, jackie chan is much more succeful than jet li,
they were originaly supposed to make jackie chan into the next bruce lee but because jackie chan had his own unique technique, they considered jackie chan and bruce lee to be unimitatable . ahah anyone can do what jet li does, which is kungfu, danm, i could even do it. jackie chan uses all sorts of kungfu, drunken, tiger, snake................blah blah blah,:blahblah: lol
OVERALL. JACKIE CHAN WINS!!!:boink::bigwink:

Jacki Chan knows limited amount of Kung FU styles, he is good at it but
Jet Li started Kung Fu school at 8 years old and he was a champion of
"Shaolin Kung fu" all over the China ages 12-18 and to learn Shaolin Kung Fu
It takes several years practicing every day. After that only few will ever get 2 Secret Kung Fu which combines Different styles like Tai Chi with Shaolin Kung Fu makes ur style deadly. but anyways i Vote 4 Jet Lee not bcuz he has better or more movies but bcuz i know lot about his martial arts styles that most of u guys dont even know!

Dude, Jackie Chan uses real kung fu! Ever watch Jet Li's movie? All his moves are edited with special effects. The chan man doesn't need crappy film editing to be bad ass. Jet li does however. That's why it's Jackie Chan, hands down. I mean seriously, they edit the crap out of all jet li's fighting scene's to make him look super human. It's fucking dumb.
This topic should be Jackie Chan Vs Tony Jaa. Neither of them use shitty film effects to make their kung fu look better.

It is still a fact that Jet Li has won many REAL fights and competitions, and as far as I know, Jackie Chan hasn't even fought in a real competition. Jackie Chan is great at what he does, but what he does is PERFORM. He was trained to look great, not fight great.
Looking at their movies is completely fucking retarded. Like look at Rumble in the Bronx. In the bloopers, Chan tries to duck out of the way of a pinball machine coming towards him, but moves too slowly and it sandwiches his head between the machine and the wall. If he tried that move in a real fight he would be dead. Yeah Chan doesn't always use special effects (but he does use them, The Tuxedo anyone?), he just has to rehearse it for months and do take after take until he gets it right.
Also, watch some of Jet Li's older movies. He was doing films long before The One.

Jet Li hooks himself up to a bunch of wires, launches himself all over a movie set and calls himself a martial artist. Chan leaps across rooftops, does insane stunts, and fucks niggers up without even breaking a sweat. Anybody that thinks Jet Li is a better fighter is a 13 year old pubeless cunt with a high voice and no arm hair.

Again, you do realize Jet Li has been making movies for longer than the past 10 years, right?
How many martial arts competitions has Jackie Chan won?

You go to be crazy to think Jackie Chan could bet Jet Li... I bet most of people that voted Jackie Chan must not be Asian because Asian people would know this answer. Jet Li study many different types of martial arts for example "Wu Shu" which my Uncle teaches. Jet Li study Wu Shu at age 8yrs old and then later on mastering Wu Shu. right now if you had to consider Jet Li, Jacky Chan, and Tony Jaa then you would have to vote for Jet Li. Muy Thai is a form of Thai Boxing but remember this, all types of fighting originated from China and guess where Jet Li is from.... also note this there are even more better fighters that people don't even know of for example Zhao Wen Zhou also a great fight that also studied Wu Shu along with Jet Li. between those two guy i would love to see a real match with them. now going back to Tony Jaa, yes he is a good fighter. notice i said good and not great. Tony Jaa has a on screen unique style of Muy Thai and with a Chinese martial art influence may seem very amazing. just remember on screen is practice stunts same as Jackie Chan, everyone agree some of the things he has done is pretty amazing as well. don't get me wrong, there are even more crazy amazing things that people has not seen in movies that has been done in real life. for example for the Shaolin monks has done many extraordinary things I've ever seen in the Martial arts world. if anyone doesn't agree with me, you can message me on http://www.myspace.com/ace127viet <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/joa9tuT-Mts&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/joa9tuT-Mts&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Chuck norris could take them all on.
Jet Li anyday of the week. Sure Jackie Chan is a much better and funnier actor but in a fight, Jet Li would whoop his asss.

Why are you comparing movie stunts that probably took months to perfect? We're talking about REAL LIFE FIGHTING. Fact is, Jet Li is better trained in real life than Jackie Chan. Like someone else already said, he's been studying martial arts since he was 8 years old.
