I grew up with metal. I'm in my mid twenties. Most shit I like is before my time. I bought LP's becasue Eddie was on the cover, and it just so happened that Iron Maiden's Live After Death kicked ass. So did early Metallica and early Megadeth. So does Slayer to this day.

I could go on and on and on. I just discovered Gojira, whom I fucking LOVE. They embody averything good about Morbid Angel, Strapping YOung Lad, ah forget it.

Testament, Death, Kaos, SLayer, ah fuck it...I can't name drop. I guess I could. I'm soused, sorry. Carcass, Pantera, Morbid, Deicide, yada yada yada.

is happening to metal these days. Never mind that Scott Ian is on every fucking VH1 show. Never ming that Metallica is putting out therapy videos and horrible southern rock songs to make the $$ off of people that live in those gullible areas.

Never mind all the progress that "underground " metal has made, which has gained in popularity.

So by no means am I surprised by the upsurgence of "boy band" groups that basically feed off either "metal 101" or the old 80's standards, like Trivium (talented but souless), Unearth (amazing breaks but angry young teen vocals), and utter garbage like Bullet For My Valentine or whatever.

I don't know about Opeth, so forgive my ignorance. I just see a lot of jailbait chicks in hoodies and I'm sketch.

I really hate pidgeonholing music, but metal to me is an institution. Regardless of what you like, I feel that there's an unspoken respect that good metal bands get. Not to stroke off my sig, but Slayer has been very sucessful with little to no airplay until recently.

Bands like Old Man's Child, SYL, Gojira, even songs like Lamb of God's break in "The Faded Line" have renewed my faith in the genre.

hey... I played on a line in the minors with Mathias Trygg, he was out in the US for like a month with the Cologne Sharks.... cool dude. He was a huge Mayhem fan. Random name drop. Your OPINION about SYL is your own. It does not make it so. Gene Hoglan is an epic drummer, and I am a huge fan of that band for many reasons, Devin Townsend being the biggest one. And yes, after not listening to much metal for a stretch, SYL did renew my faith. Mine, not yours. The fact that SYL doesn't take themselves too seriously (like, well, you?), is incredibly talented, and goes completely against popular trend, yes... I dig it.

Second of all, the "genre" you claim I know NOTHING about is one that I have been a part of for two decades at least. Maybe you can name drop more obscure bands or have been to more concerts (which I seriously doubt), but this meaningless respone you've given proves nothing.

I'm glad you know EVERYTHING about the genre... maybe you can enlighten me as to what I SHOULD be listening to, seeing that MTV, the radio and everyone else in the business seems to want to do that too. Personally I don't like metal as a whole. A lot of it, with any sub genre of it, is rehashed and over used. However I like metal for the fact it has brought influence to other bands that aren't exactly metal but use it to make a unique sound. When I listen to metal I can never listen to it for personal pleasure, but it does get my creativity going.

i know how you feel dude. it can be frustrating seeing things we beleive to be crap succeed and things we love not get the recognition they truley deserve. however ive learned one very important thing: if you stop giving a fuck about whose in the mainstreem and what this band is doing and where its all going and just be more open minded, relax, and enjoy the music you love instead of critisizing everything, you will be much happier.

i beleive Trivium is a riff stealing, souless, in it for the money, learned to play guitar from magazines type of band. but do they make good music? i think so. if Metallicas not going to make "metallica music" amymore then im glad someone is.
