Claypool for the talent side of the battle...But I can't stand Primus' music.

Flea for the foot tapping side of the battle. I love his stuff.

Good call.

As for the thread, I'm not very familiar with Flea, but I know I enjoy Claypool's work tremendously. I'm just going to guess that he is in fact more talented than Flea based on all of the other posts.

Too bad Sheehan looks like a child molester now.

Flea by fucking miles, I am absolutely gobsmacked that appreciate Claypool so much. And then again both of them slap with that shitty white-man style where the thumb points down, restricting all dynamics and lots of techniques.

Both of them are incredibly fucking awesome, but I have to go with Flea. To me, he's just a better bassist.

Maybe Rob Trujillo and Dirk Lance could be added to the poll - they both are decently similar to Flea and Claypool?

Flea & Les are in my opinion 2 of the most over-rated bass players on Earth. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Chili Peppers and ALL of Claypool's endeavors (seen him live 5 times). But when people start throwing around words like "bass god" it shows how little most they know about the bass.
Sure, they're both good bass players, they both play with awesome bands, and they both have an excellent discography. But that doesn't make them bass gods. Bass gods make music that's on a whole other level of complexity, style and technique, the way Steve Vai does and Jimi Hendrix did on guitar.
I'm 21 and I can play 99% of both their bass lines myself, most of it's really not that hard. They just have a nack for making great, original and unusual sounding music but they use pretty common techniques. They're great, but they're not the best.
You wanna hear some real bass gods, listen to Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Larry Graham, John Pattitucci, George Smed, Billy Sheehan, Michael Manring, Steve Bailey, Rocco Prestia, Tony Levin.....I could go on and on and on.

Dude your right, Ataxia is a trippy band. I heard some samples and I'm gonna leave my house in a bit to by "automatic writing"

Thanks for showing me this new band. ;)

ohh yeah, both musicians are great in thier own right, but Claypool has been the most original thus far. Claypool is so distinct and different, you can tell it's claypool playing from only a 5 second clip of their music.

George Smed? I'm a bigger bass god then George Smed.

It's funny that all the guys you listed bar Billy Sheehan are completely lifeless on stage, it shows that you don't value stage presence much. I'm sure Flea could groove just as intricately as Rocco or Levin if he wasn't jumping round, smiling and ENTERTAINING PEOPLE.

Totally agree. Ability doesn't mean everything unless your a fuckin no mark session musician. You can sit in your bedroom and get as good as you want, if you've got no energy and presence on stage then i don't want to watch you, and anyone who does will be sitting there trying to work out if they're better than you. Why do you think Kurt Cobain was so successful.

Gotta be Flea.

making a general statement that one professional musician is better than another is tough. They are different people and approach their instruments, and music, in very different ways. They are both fairly talented.

But Claypool is better than Flea.

Ugh, Claypool, not even close.

But Flea kicks ass too.

Who gives a shit whether Primus blow or not. RHCP are much much more listenable than Primus, still doesn't change Claypool being better then Flea.
