Gladius is like that, although you don't fight for the character, you just tell them what to do. Probably not what you're looking for though.

Gladius, PS2. It actually was a great game, more of a turn based RPG/tactics game. You build a squad of gladiators and level them up in various arenas, very addicting.

There was another that allowed you to control your fighter, Shadows of Rome I think it was called. You ran around half the time solving puzzles, the rest was spent in the arena fighting.

I have Gladius for Game Cube, its alright but got boring really quick.

they should make it like fable sorta you start child get bigger and stronger fight in arenas and become legend , throw in many side missions. you got your self a kick ass game

Shadow of Rome for the PS2 might be what you are looking for - its a well good game and you are a gladiator flighting in arenas aganst ppl, tigers elephants etc.

I thought it was a very good game!!
