I've been trying to make one all night, but I've yet to succeed.
Essentially, I downloaded an Ubuntu ISO file (Ubuntu 6.10 (http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/ubuntu-releases/edgy/ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso)), and I'm trying to make a Live CD from it. The instructions tell me to just burn the ISO file straight to the CD, then boot from that CD. However, when I tried that, my computer didnt recognize the CD and just booted XP as usual. I've also tried extracting the ISO into another folder and burning its contents onto a CD, again no luck. For a third try, I burned the extracted contents onto a CD, as well as a .bin image (isolinux.bin) in order to make the CD "bootable". When I did this, my computer just sat at a blank screen, and booted no running system.
Am I using the wrong .bin file, or is there something else I'm doing wrong here?

Did you set the boot order to try to boot from the CD drive first, before checking the hard drive?

Yep, I already set up the boot priority in BIOS (thus the blank screen when I inserted a bootable CD).

I dunno. I've never tried Ubuntu llive CD, but Knoppix worked on the first burn. DSL took a few tries before I got one that would boot. I always burn the ISO's straight to a disk with Nero or BURNCDCC. It's always a good idea to use md5summer to check that your download didn't get corrupted too.
Some laptops, I can't get the cd's to boot, even with the bios set right.

I have like 30 official copies of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake right from Ubuntu in the packaging and shit.
Shoot me a PM if you want one sent your way.

Could you reword that?

the iso is an image of a cd. you have to mount it using a program like Alcohol 120% or Daemon tools before you burn it onto CD.
sorry if it seems a bit obvious but i had a friend who did the same thing, he thought he just had to burn the iso directly onto a cd.

You know, as obvious as that is, I never even thought of it. I think I've got Daemon tools floating around somewhere, I'll see if I can figure it out. Thanks man.
EDIT: I have Daemon tools, but it seems that Daemon tools is only useful for mounting virtual drives. Would it work to mount a virtual drive then run the CD with the ISO on it, or do I have to mount the ISO to the CD itself?

I've never had to mount a cd image before burning it. Burn CDCC and nero both take care of directly burning the image.iso file onto a disk. Just browse it to the iso and click burn image.
I only mount a cd image if I want to use it in the virtual drive on that comp.

Alright, you mount the .iso on the virtual drive with Daemon tools. Then use any CD copier program and you'll be all set, just select the proper drives and it'll work fine.

yeah, daemon should make a virtual drive.
just open up daemon and mount that iso in your virtual drive.
then just use the copy cd function in whatever cd burning program you use.

Awesome, I think I finally got it. Man, I feel dumb right now. Thanks a lot for the help.
