PS3 Sonic the Hedge

I just picked up a PS3, for the BluRay and I got a couple games for my nieces to play. I got Sonic the Hedgehog for my nieces, but we can't even figure out how to get passed the first board. There is a line of rings that go over water, to a little piece of land. I think I have to stay airborne, along that ring line, in order to make it accross the water and not drown. How do you do that?

talk to the old man outside the little shop ;)

and further on in the game when you have to shut the gate to stop the whale escaping the button is on top of a hill you have to use a jumppad to get to (took me ages to get that one figured out)
