Do any Americans think the President should be more accountable? Not exclusively Bush, but any President.

Take our Prime Minister. We don't pick him, or vote for him. Yet he has a monthly press conference, and is, on a weekly basis, torn into in the House of Commons.

You vote for a President directly, yet he doesn't seem to answer to the people, except every four years. Am i right? I don't know. How is the President held accountable?

What are your thoughts?

I couldn't run for US president even if I wanted to.

I could, however, stand to be elected to Parliament, start my own political party, win a majority in the Commons, and then become Prime Minister.

Aw i thought you were going to say you were crazy.

Well, every January there is the State of the Union where the president gives his goals and gives the "state of the union".

Normally the presidents can do press conferences when they want. Bush doesnt do them nearly as much. Also he does tons of speeches, not all are on TV. You can see some on court tv (clinton heh...)

No, we don't. If the last election taught us anything it taught us that.

Do any Americans think the President should be more accountable? Not exclusively Bush, but any President. Our president can be removed from office if at any point there is real evidence showing he should be.

Take our Prime Minister. We don't pick him, or vote for him. Yet he has a monthly press conference, and is, on a weekly basis, torn into in the House of Commons. And our president is torn in to by the world on a daily basis.

How is the President held accountable? Impeachment. He can be put on trial for high crimes and misdemeanors and removed from office. This is why I question the sincerity of his opposition regarding situations like Iraq. If they truely believe there is a conspiracy or whatever, why not impeach? If there is anything to back up the statement, it should be grounds for impeachment. But even the most bitterly partisan democrats havent even started the process or spoken about the possibility of it.

No, we don't. If the last election taught us anything it taught us that. Yeah, the last election tought america that our forefathers were smarter than the average american and understand the idea of statistical samples.

You're telling me the only way a President can be held accountable for his political motives is by impeachment? It'd take a Congress that were rather power mad to impeach a President just because they didn't like what he was doing.

I'm not talking about being held accountable at the highest levels. I'm talking about actually having to answer for current events. None of this passionate speech bollocks, just direct questions and answers.

Bush may be ripped into on a daily basis by the world at large, but he doesn't have to answer to or even listen to these complaints.

Ah ok I wasnt sure what you were getting at in the first post. No, the president wouldnt have to ever talk if he didnt want to. He would have a hard time getting re-elected though.

It looks bad to let stuff go unanswered, and that is one of the aspects about Bush that annoys me, and that frankly, Clinton deserves some credit for.
