"Is Wii winning the console race?"
by Mike Smith

"Of all the pundits that tried to call the console race before Christmas, few predicted the Nintendo Wii, with its modest hardware and oddball control system, would still be lining up the punters in March. 436,000 Wiis sold in January, beating the Xbox 360 and PS3 handily, and there's no sign of the pace slackening. The handheld DS is doing nearly as well, tightening Nintendo's 18-year stranglehold on the portable market and capitalizing on its first-rate software selection. A total of 635,000 new Nintendo systems made their way home with eager U.S. purchasers in the supposedly quiet post-holiday period.

Even with that quantity of systems moving through the retail system, both the Wii and the DS remain hard to find in stores nationwide, while the other two consoles are lining the shelves. If you're unfortunate enough to still be looking, your best bet is to keep your eyes on online trackers like ours or resort to the usual auction sites.

Wii games are shifting well, too. Although Wii heavy-hitter The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess sold well in January, it was actually beaten to the top spot by quirky minigame-fest Warioware: Smooth Moves, despite the latter not actually coming out until the 15th. Rayman: Raving Rabbids came third, with under half of Zelda's sales. Unsurprisingly, Wii owners have vast appetites for games that take advantage of the machine's uniqueness.

Nintendo's fast pace of impressive releases continued in March with the surprise appearance of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the N64 smash hit that's remembered as one of the best Zelda games -- if not the best -- of all time. Coming up in the next few months, fans of classic Nintendo systems can expect to see Super Metroid, Excitebike, Mario Kart 64, and Duck Hunt hitting the service. "

If you actually manage to make it to page 2, it gets pretty sad from there.

This author clearly believes the Wii--and subsequently, Nintendo--is going to the win the console race even though we're roughly only four months in.

It's very apparent what he's trying to do when he 'neglects' to mention the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360's upcoming line-ups. Enjoy it while you can, buddy. This time next year it'll be a whole new ball game.

People are so dumb. Just buy a system you like and play it. Hell, I'd buy all 3 systems if I could afford it. I don't understand the need to say "My system is better then your system"

Not sure if that was to me or to him.

Either way, the XBox 360 has already been out for a year. It's upcoming games are definitely going to be more established and defined than the Wiis as developers are still working out the kinks in that and the PS3.

He drones on and on about the Nintendo, Super Nintendo and N64 games, even though their no longer free and everyone gets them. Supply and demand will level out and the big hits for XBox 360 and the PlayStation 3 will come out. Yes, the Wii has several still coming, but there's just no huge hype for it at the moment.

Everything I've seen so far show the PS3 and XBox 360 as having a wonderful season this upcoming summer/fall/winter.

Assholes with no self-esteem buy PS3. The only ones that buy x-box are dumb American hicks too. (except that one asian guy I knew who owned one... and my buddy George who happend to be Arab... alright stfu)

Nintendo has always owned in fun factor. Granted its sometimes a bit childish but that only bothers people who try to live their lives in video games because their too emo about their own life. Basically they need to feel cool by association.

I think people who are most threatend by Wii though are fat nerds who will actually have to do some exercise to keep up with their competition. NoooO! I love cookies and diabeties.

I always knew the Wii would sell, purely due to its price and the fact it had somthing new.

Whether the Wii can keep people intressting long enough is another question.

Yes, the Wii is winning the war. This is based on sales of in North America of all major game consoles and handheld gaming systems for the month of February 2007.

Nintendo DS - 485K
Nintendo Wii - 335K
Sony PS2 - 295K
Microsoft Xbox 360 - 228K
Sony PSP - 176K
Nintendo GBA - 136K
Sony PS3 - 127K
Nintendo GameCube - 24K

It strikes me as interesting that the PS2 sold more than twice as many units as the PS3. Not sure what these sales figures mean in terms of how the PS3 will pan out for Sony, but it doesn't look good. I predict the PS3 will die; it will just end up costing Sony too much money. We'll see though

I predict Wii will win this year and next but not sure after that.

My friend says Wii will get boring, 360 will gain dominance with Halo 3, and PS3's MGS4 will make Wii look outdated.

I really doubt the PS3 will do any blasting. Considering how equal it is to the 360 in power and how the 360 currently has a better library of games and will continue to stay a few steps ahead of the PS3.

I think the Wii will "win" the console war. Based on sales and how Nintendo did a brilliant job with the marketing of it. Cheap and friendly, it explores new blue markets and it is appealing to a wider market than the 360 and PS3. Both hardcore gamers and non gamers should have interest in it, so it'll sell more than the 360 and PS3. And once it becomes the top dog, the developers will shift towards it.

It's not as fun as you would think. I only liked playing GTA on my PSP. Of course that's just my opinion.

I think the Wii will survive and be a good console in the long run but I have no idea of who will actually win.

One market analyst said the 360 would win, another said the PS3 and another said the Wii. To summarize, none of them can predict shit.

I want to get a 360 later on and IF some games come out for the PS3 that I happen to like a lot then I will get one (PS3 slimline for $150  ). That's the only reason I bought a PS2 slimline... for like 4 games. I had one when it first came out but I returned it and waited a while to get a Xbox. I'm glad I did b/c I loved it and I still use it everyday because it modded and acts as a media center for me. I use it for gaming too of course.

well according to last night news, the wii is the top seller due to its lower price and family friendly feel, only prob is the lack of cool games. there's only a few noteworthy ones. the 360 is at 2nd mainly cuz its had a head start and has a larger game selection to choose from. the ps3 is at last due to its overblown price, lack of good games (resistance failed to do anything for the system unlike dead rising and gears of war did for the 360). they labeled the ps3 a bust and if the blu ray dvd doesn't succeed that can spell certain doom for the ps3. not only that but game designers are having probs with the blu ray. they even talked to people who owned the console and most said that they were mostly playing their wii's and 360s cuz that's where the games and quality are at while their ps3s were more like paper weights taking up space. they ended their report saying that if sony doesn't get their act together they might go the way of sega.

wii's are sweet... I think they are the future of video games, plus they are cheap....too bad they are so damn hard to find, me and my friend have been "wii hunting" for a long time but havent found one yet....

It's selling well, Nintendo's turning a huge profit, and their stocks are skyrocketing.

On top of that, they completely dominate the handheld market.

Nintendo's going to do just fine this generation.

Nope. The 360 is... and "winning" doesn't mean anything. What is your criteria? Profitability? Market share for future projects? Total sales? Assistance in selling peripheral items (zunes for example)

Mugatu

Winning means everything in the real world.

Overall profit of both games/units sold = winning.

Quality of games/fun factor is based on opinion so it doesnt count for jack shit.

The Wii owns though.

I HAVE A DREAM... A dream where the console wars will be naught but a memory, a dream where all three companies will come together and join hands in unity, a dream where white boys and girls will play black boys and girls whilst simultaneously playing yellow boys and girls and brown boys and girls over the internet, a dream where everyone wins and everyone is happy, a dream where gaming is cheap and affordable whilst still kicking butt in the fun and graphics department...

I HAVE A DREAM... And I called this dream the PSWii60.

If you really want to compare the Wii and the 360 see how many 360s had been sold after being out as long as the Wii has and compare them. I'm WAY too lazy to look that up.

But if I remember correctly you could get a 360 rather easily by this time after it's launch.

I wish I had both but oh well I'm a broke dick.

In the UK I was hunting till March 26th and that was because I managed to walk into HMV, ask for one and they let me have a Premium Console that was on Pre-Order. In other words, I bought someone else's 360.

This is a real fucking simple question.

Is it winning the race? Well, is it selling the most?

Then yes.

What's the future hold? That's another argument. But the answer to the question at hand is: Yes, the Wii is winning the console race.

Pretty much, although a bunch of people will disagree, there's no denying how well the Wii is selling and if it keeps up it's obviously going to be the best seller out of all the consoles, which equals winning.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? YOUR LAME ASS OPINION ISNT FACT!, JUST BECAUSE YOU BELIEVE IT IS WINNING DOESNT MEAN IT IS. SELLING MORE DOES NOT MEAN WINNING..IT MEANS..UMMM........shit what does it mean....fuck apparently more people are owning the system...so....that means...fuck you are right. shit. now i feel like an ass.

But the wii is like a penis, and i like to play with mine all day.

then occasionally ill let my friend andrew have a turn.
