...other than a door-stop :)

Utilize the Cell processor in your PS3 to run Folding@Home and help cure diseases more effectively than you could with your current computer.

Now in 2006, we are looking forward to another major advance in capabilities. This advance utilizes the new Cell processor in Sony’s PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) to achieve performance previously only possible on supercomputers. With this new technology (as well as new advances with GPUs), we will likely be able to attain performance on the 100 gigaflop scale per computer. With about 10,000 such machines, we would be able to achieve performance on the petaflop scale. With software from Sony, the PlayStation 3 will now be able to contribute to the Folding@Home project, pushing Folding@Home a major step forward.

More here with screen shots and videos. (http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-PS3.html)

And people were joking when they said PS3's could cure cancer :ahhh:

Download will be available tomorrow (March 22nd).

I prefer to think of Computers as future self. In the future, all the dead can have their brains scanned and their personalities uploaded to a computer where they can live on in whatever fantasy they like. They also need to interact with one another in a realistic environment, so they'd have to all be uploaded to a server with a huge processor and an even larger harddrive for realistic environments and human interactions and to hold all the personalities. The server will orbit the earth in a geosynchronous orbit so everything can be uploaded with a broadband laser signal broadcast from earth to the server, located within a space station, the ISS Heaven. Every now and then, the people on Earth can talk to the personalities in Heaven via a 3D hologram that completely resembles the dead during the prime of their life. The hologram will be appropriately called a ghost, and will help people visit their ancestors and get a detailed point of view of important parts of history.

Anyway, cancer only helps people get to heaven, I don't see why anyone would want to cure it.

Doctor: The PS3 has flatlined! It's losing too many exclusives! Nurse, bring me exclusives, now!

Nurse: Doctor, there aren't any more available exclusives. What are we going to do!?

Doctor: We'll have to take drastic measures.. I need ten cc's of hype, STAT!

Nurse: Are you sure that will work Doctor?

Doctor: It's the only choice we have!

Nurse: *exhales*

Doctor: Let's hope we can keep the PS3 on life support until more exclusives become available... if more exclusives become available...

LOL, that was great. Brought a smile to my face. Better notify the next of kin, the PSP, and don't forget to tell him there probably won't be a PS4...

They already have that. It's called World of Warcraft.

Looks like Sony did a fantastic job at making the home-supercomputer. (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=osstats) About 20,000 PS3's doubled the computing power of about 200,000 other computers. If only it played games.

And seeing as how your PS3 will probably over heat and explode before you get 1 WU done... Its basically useless.

Right, tell that to the 30,000 PS3 users (of 230,000 total users) who make up over half of the current Folding@home activity.

EDIT: At one point today PS3 users made up almost 3/4th's of all activity. (http://tomwritesablog.blogspot.com/2007/03/playstation-3-is-folding-up-storm.html)

That's the 360 you're confusing with the PS3.

OS Type
Windows
Teraflops 151
Active CPUs 158572

PS3
Teraflops 102
Active CPU's

Useless?

Yeah that's one thing NOBODY can argue with. I haven't heard anything about PS3's going out in mass like the 360 has. Chalk one up to Sony for good manufacturing.

The PS3 does run hot, but it doesn't come close to overheating. There is vents and heat pipes all over the thing!

The only problem I heard so far was the 1080i problem which has partially been fixed.

Sony and good manufacturing should never be used in the same sentence. If it doesn't fall apart, it's got too much DRM to play even MP3s, and if not that, then it explodes, and if not that, then it just has no games. They've earned that reputation, and I think everyone should respect it.

Show me some links were PS3's have been returned like the 360 has. I'm not saying the things is perfect, just that it's had less issues thus far.
