911 Turbos are all-around great cars. I would reccomend test driving one and seeing for yourself, but I can almost guarantee you will like it.

As for a good deal, if I had 90 grand, I would jump on this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-Porsche-GT2-Euro-Club-Sport-MUST-SEE_W0QQitemZ200092040707QQcategoryZ10156QQrdZ1QQc mdZViewItem) in a heartbeat. 911 GT2s are simply fucking awesome.

My cousin has a 911 turbo (05 I believe). I have rode in a good amount of sports cars, from camaro's to BMW coupes to corvettes, but NOTHING came close to the one he had. When he floored it, it actually THREW me back in my seat, the first time I ever experienced that in a car. He got a used one with some good mods on it for about 120k, so it was a good deal. That car is a beast.

I'de recommend it even though power isn't your main choice (since it is a great all around car). Another good one is the BMW 6 series or the M5, more luxury with sports performance. Corvette Z06 is also very nice.

What about wiring, linkages, cooling system, and everything else to make the motor work? Also, G50 = $5000 Used, there goes half of the engine/trans budget.

Also, Meio, could you assemble the car and make it run? Most shops wouldn't touch it and the ones that will would probably charge over $2000 to install the engine and transmission, then what happens when something goes wrong, good luck finding someone that will touch a custom car.

I've never fitted a brand new engine before, but I can read instructions, and I have a phone (so I can phone the Marlows if it all goes pear shaped).

I know lots of shops that don't give 2 fucks where a car came from. Do you live in some kind of main dealership land or something?

A Carrera is built to be a luxurious performance car. It can go on the track, but its a very comfortable ride on the road as well. The Ultima is a kit car--it belongs on the track. Since I've never been in one, I can only speculate that you would not want to go on a drive of any significant distance in one.

Installing an engine and trans in a Ultima would fall under custom work and unless you have friends, custom work is expensive. I'm sure I could have it together and running in a weekend, but I have done custom engine swaps before.

Pretty sad if you can't take on someone's car incase they sue you for leaving the heater controls on 3, thus causing hot air to be blown onto their feet and making their ride slightly uncomfortable.

Or it would be from the early 70s, in decent condition, and runs fine. Besides, he said $100K, not $10K. For 100 large, you can buy a used 911 Turbo and still have money left over.

You can buy ANY car for under $100k used, it just depends on it's condition.

For example:

2002 mint condition 911 turbo with 10149 miles, no problems: $110k

2002 in good condition 911 turbo with 100,000 miles, has some problems cosmetically and mechanically but still runs and great car: $65k

Do you see where I'm coming from???

Well speculations aside, I can find no evidence that the Carrera would be more practicle on the road.

'Luxury' is a different issue from practicality. The Carrera has a about a 65l luggage capacity which is this big:

http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/pr/pro-action-65-litre-rucksack.jpg

The GTR has 2 side pods and other stowage areas which probably equates to about the same.

Fuel economy:

Carrera 16mpg (being generous)
GTR 25mpg (being generous)

what else were you thinking?

Ride?

http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/gtr/usaroadtrip.html

By all the accounts I have read not too painful....

Anyway, whatever, you just keep thinking that the GTR must be a bag of shit because of your 'kit-car' prejudice.

Well speculations aside, I can find no evidence that the Carrera would be more practicle on the road.

Thats why I speculate. I know quite well the practicality of Carreras on the road, but not much at all of that of the GTR. I'm not gonna lie, I'm biased when it comes to Porsches, but by no means did I ever imply that the GTR is a "bag of shit". A car meant solely for the track is hardly a bag of shit, unless of course I were calling one of my own cars a bag of shit.

Now, as far as that article goes, it claims nothing about how comfortable the ride is in the GTR, leaving me once again up to speculation. In the end, I'll still reccomend a Porsche anyway, because thats what I do. Any more useless arguments you'd like to throw my way?

You did imply that the GTR was a bag of shit, you just didn't state such opinion specifically.

For what it's worth, I'm biased against Porsches, for various reasons but the chief of which is probably that they seem to be bought by people with more money than imagination. They are estate agents' and middle managers' cars, a brand like Gucci.

Why are you insisting that the GTR is 'built for the track'?

It holds the record for 0-100-0 by quite some margin, which is a statistic I would say comes in handy on the track. On the road, not so much. I cant say too much about the suspension, as I really dont know much about it, but I can assume its a pretty stiff suspension (one might say "race-inspired"), which is uncomfortable for everyday driving. At this point, the only thing stopping me from calling it a full-blown race car is that its street legal.
