It was a black and white film and I think it has been remade by mel gibson.

Basically this guys son is kidnapped and the kidnapper demands a ransom. He has to deal with a strong dilemma. He can either pay the ransom and possibly get his son back, or he can not pay the ransom so he does not encourage more kidnappers to kidnap other children to make money.

If we give in to kidnappers' demands it may work in the immediate short term, but in the long term more people will be kidnapped once a weakness to be exploited is found.

In the end, the father chooses to offer the money as a bounty to anyone who finds and kills/captures the kidnapper instead of giving it as ransom.

Does he get his son back!? Go rent it!

Absolutely right. It may sound harsh leaving a man to die like that, but in the long term a no negotiation policy saves many lives. If we concede to it once it will send the message that kidnapping is a great way for terrorists to achieve their goals and the amount of incidents will skyrocket.
