So.. Admittedly I had no idea who the guy was, or what the hell he was saying, but it made more sense after watching this SNL skit first.

SNL Skit on Google Video (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8839411299782714555&q=Harry+Caray+SNL)

And here is the eBaums version of the soldier impersonator (http://emuse.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/17970).

That's all... Not much of a thread... :uhoh:

That was actually prutty lame. Soldiers arent funny and lack personality. They should stick to what they do best, solving problems as babaricaly as they can.

I personally thought that was hysterical. Its also a good way to lighten the mood when you're searching someone's vehicle for weapons. Even that Iraqi guy was laughing.

"Its also a good way to lighten the mood when you're searching someone's vehicle for weapons."

Unless you're suggesting that the vehicle searches are just a way to give people the illusion of security (which is probable, but we don't want to admit that), then it's probably not a good idea to make light of a weapons search, especially if there are actually people out there willing to kill themselves just to hurt you. I'm not saying soldiers can't have a sense of humor, but it seems kind of inappropriate when you consider that being a soldier is essentially his job, so he's messing around on duty when he's supposed to be protecting the nation and whatnot.

In addition to the "illusion of security", random vehicle searches also deter illegal activity, such as weapons/drugs smuggling etc. You could argue that the soldier's behavior was inappropriate, but not really illegal. Hopefully he does this routine with everyone they stop.

Can anyone confirm where this took place?

Ok, you're right. It's only a war. It's not like countless people die in Iraq every month from suicide bombs.

Call me uptight all you will, videos of American soldiers messing around on duty always irritate the hell out of me. We're supposed to be over there to protect and liberate the Iraqi people (ever since we failed to find weapons, at least) and instead we're fucking around. The whole thing is a travesty to begin with, this is just insult to injury.

Right, because one fucking soldier doing a haray caray impersonation is gonna effect everything. He's doing the job fine, and having fun while doing it, so shut up.

everytime something happens, it effects everything. the shorthand is the butterfly effect. the result is a microcosm, where a small event can capture the main vibe of the larger picture. this video showed a harmless, legal, comical interaction, in a war zone. i would say this lends support to those who purport that the current war in the M.E. is something of a "joke".
(but i haven't confirmed that this was filmed in iraq yet..)

You can argue all you want, I know it's not illegal. There's just something wrong about any kind of tomfoolery when you're supposed to be protecting a country's people in a war zone. And yes, one soldier doing an impression can impact everything. In fact, if there were to be a few videos of soldiers doing things like taunting hungry children with water bottles, or rear-ending traffic out of their way with a tank on the internet, I bet global opinion of U.S. soldiers would plummet. Oh wait.

First of all, they're not in a tank in the video... And second, they are ordered to do that so they don't stop or slow down. Get your facts straight moron.

I would argue that kind of thing actually helps us in the war. It at least makes the Iraqis feel more comfortable about us being there. I know if I was an Iraqi, I'd feel much more comfortable if the Americans were friendly and light-hearted than if they were strict and angry.

My favorite Harry Caray bit from SNL is when Colin Quinn replaced Norm MacDonald as weekend update host and Harry (Ferrell) kept saying "Hey Norm!".

If you were a hot dog, would you eat yourself?

I thought it was funny. Just another guy in the world trying to have a little fun. Obviously when he needs to get his job done I expect him to focus and complete his task.

Neither of these facts -

1. They aren't in a tank
2. They are following orders

detract from the overall concept of American soldiers barging their way through Iraqi cities and knocking into civilian vehicles. Get YOUR facts straight, the ones that matter.

I would agree that a lighthearted atmosphere would help relations with the public, but there is a difference between being lighthearted and goofing around in supposedly dangerous situations. Anyways, I'm not saying that this soldier is the spawn of satan, I'm just saying that it's somewhat unsettling to see this deadly war not being taken seriously at the front itself, and it really doesn't help the image American soldiers have in global politics as it is.

Those ARE the facts that matter because you make it sound like they're just bumping into people for the hell of it, when they aren't the ones making the rules. they AREN'T in a tank. They're in a bradley. So once again you look like a moron. And again, they have specific orders not to slow down, even if that means bumping into other vehicles. Look it up, genius. Both fact.

And the real matter of the debate here gnome, is that you are a bitch. You over analyze every video and critique it as if its something that needed to be. Its a funny video, GET OVER IT. you did this with other threads too, you don't watch the video for its entertainment value, you just sit there and pick at it. Just like the genius baby video. "That babys nothing special blah blah IM the ones who's a genius."

Don't watch the video and comment if you think they're so dumb. Seriously. They're here just to be simple and funny. But nooo, thats TOO MUCH for the gnome. He's gotta argue with everybody and prove a point about a stupid video.

Deftones, you do realize that you're the only one fueling the fire, right? I've already said this multiple times, I enjoy the videos for entertainment value and enjoy the forums for debate value. I'm not going to come on the forums and say 'Hey everyone lol that was a funny video!' unless it was something amazing. I personally thought that the soldier did a terrible impersonation and wasn't funny at all, just awkward and out of place. I actually stopped watching after the third time he said he would ask for seconds, because it was getting old already.

This forum is for comments on the videos. If you can't stand more in-depth comments than 'that was good' or 'that was lame', then just leave the forum.

Anyways, if you want to argue more, I'm down. I understand perfectly that they were not in a tank (irrelevant) and that they were under orders (the average viewer doesn't know that, and that doesn't justify the order in the first place), but the issue at hand is an image problem. 99% of the people you show that video to who are not strongly in favor of the American cause will probably leave with a bad taste in their mouth. These videos are simply harmful to the country's image. It makes it seem like we're screwing around over there and people are dying on our watch.

I love it when I'm near a group of people speaking in a foreign language and they all start laughing about something.

he only asks for seconds twice. and i hope it doesn't take this video to make people realize the absurdity ("screwing around") of america vs. iraq. this looked like a random weapons search that went well. i liked it, thought it was a decent impression (actually an impression of an impression).

interesting because i was the one that put the link to that clip from youtube several weeks ago on the "video submission" section and everyone hated the video. now it appears on ebaums and everyone loves it. hmmm lol. anyway i noticed someone mentioned "Super Troopers" earlier in the thread and i found out a few weeks ago the Broken Lizard gang is in the works of making "Super Troopers 2". from what IMDB indicates,it appears to be a prequel as the guy who played Rabbit will be Rabbit's dad,and Rammathorn will be Rammathorn's Dad and Farva will be Farva's dad, etc. should be cool.

Could you imagine doing the same mundayne task dozens of times a day day in and day out....
Humor makes things easier on troops and keeps morale high. Is there not humor at your place of work?
Humor has been in war since the beginning of time it is one of the things that keeps a man sane in battle.

personally the impression was ok at best. but if you are in a warzone think of how a little smile on your face would make it so much easier to be there. if u never smile you will more than likely go crazy. and people are not stupid the middle eastern dude may not have known what they were saying but he got the point and i bet he felt better having smiling faces (people) searching him than stern evil americans.

and as far as the driving vid if u have to trade a lil paint to not stop that makes sense as stopping could lead to you getting bombed. they wern't imo bashing the cars in a reckless manor they hit them so they know to get out of the way. sure scared the shit outta some people but in a hostile area you cant stop and sit still that called being a target.
