So I have had my Xbox 360 for about 4 months and last week it started to freeze about 5-10 min after I started my Xbox. I got angry as hell and wonder why the fuck is this happening. I did a little bit of research about Xbox's freezing. Upon my research I found this. (http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2006/6/16/4353)
I read through the article and since my Xbox had no warrenty and I already opened it before to mod it, I thought I would give it a shot. So I disassembled my Xbox and sure enough my GPU and CPU were fucking covered in a silver coating. Here are some sweet pictures. Sweetness1 (http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/5971/dsc00111at2.jpg) Sweetness2 (http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/9227/dsc00112wt0.jpg) Sweetness3 (http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/4387/dsc00110lr0.jpg) and Sweetness4 (http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/4792/dsc00109ev4.jpg)
I'm gonna go out tommarrow and buy some Artic Silver to put on my CPU and GPU dies and I will make a update to tell you guys if it fixed my xbox or not. I'm almost positive it will and I hope this helped someone else out there who has the same problem I have.
Damn, did you leave it on for extended periods of time with the air passage blocked?

Nope, I think the longest I have ever left it on was maybe like 7-8 hours. Its not that it got overheated its that MS put a faulty insulation in rather than putting something like Artic Silver in which would actually insulate it.

Oh I know about that, thats why i took extra care by getting a air cooling into the Xbox 360. I've had my Xbox 360 for a long time now and no problems.

Pretty sure that voids the warranty.

Yeah, modding the Xbox instantly voids the warranty. :wah:

Hmm, xbox has never froze on me, but I do get those disc read errors every once and a while. Is there any news of the lenses being faulty or I just need a lense cleaner.

Why would you want to insulate it?

Mainly Gears of War, but it froze before it even got to the dashboard sometimes. It froze once on Oblivion too.

That silver shit is a thermal compound.. basically a cheaper version of arctic silver. Most PC heatsinks come with a pad of it on the bottom of it that melts once it has sat on the CPU for an hour or so. It should eb sufficient but yours might have been off center or something and didn't cover the GPU sufficiently and melted unevenly.
Good luck though, arctic silver can take about 8degress off your temp, so it might help.

So I just put some of this shit (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102858&cp=&sr=1&origkw=heat+sink+compound&kw=heat+sink+compound&parentPage=search) on the GPU and CPU and reassembled my xbox because I didnt know where to find Arctic Silver. It still gave me the three red lights. So does that radio shack compound not work or did I not put enough on because I put a thin layer on. Im gonna try to find some Arctic Silver tommarow hopefully that will work.

my xbox360 has only ever froze online when me and someone else hit the guide button at the same time and invited our friends and a few other random times when loading a race up but when I updated it has been fine ever since
and on this pic (http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/5971/dsc00111at2.jpg)
that must be either
a:one hell of a shitty thermal paste
or
b:one hell of a hot computer
I would probably go with both
not nearly enough thermal paste you can practically see through it (http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/4387/dsc00110lr0.jpg)
put some arctic silver on it but once you put it on do not remove the heatsink again because after a few seconds AS becomes slightly liquid to be able to spread out and if you rip it off then put it back on there wont be an even distribution of AS

Thats gonna be a bitch because those fucking x-connectors that hold the heat sinks in place are a bitch to put on quickly or without moving it too much. I will give it a shot when I get some Arctic Silver.

im speaking from experience lol I accidentally ripped my brand new processor right out the board and bent the pins on it when I put arctic silver on the heatsink now I have a slightly S shaped pin (took a few hours with two credit cards to straighten them all) but atleast I didn't fuck it up
word of caution after the arctic silver has set your heatsink will stick like glue I don't think you can remove anything from the 360 board but just incase you can watch out is all I'm saying :P should be an easy job though and well worth the extra cooling also if you're serious about cooling

Well that shouldnt be a probelm becuase I doubt they would even use pins, and I think its glued down anyways. Also those fans are a waste, they arnt going to help anything.

actually they have been proven to work
they have a higher speed than the stock fans and the extra fan circulates the air where as if you just have fans at the back all they are doing is sucking air down the tunnel where as the other one is blowing it up the tunnel
its the external ones that don't do much

Last night I figured I would try and melt the heat sink compound that I got a radio shack by doing the towel trick. I let it cool over night and came home today and It worked fine, I just got done playing GOW for about 2 hours and no problems. If it freezes again which I hope wont happen, I will go and purchase some Arctic Silver. But until then I will see how it runs over time.
Edit: Nevermind started to freeze again, time to get some Arctic Silver.
Edit2: Got the Arctic Silver and put it on the GPU and CPU and it works better than ever. No freezes so far and it will hopefully stay that way.

I know just giving it a lot of breathing room helps. Mine never really freezes, it siezes up sometimes when I'm hosting on GoW, but that really is it, never any other times.
So yeah, I'd recommend making sure it has lots of ventilation, and a side note, I also wouldn't stand the 360 vertically.
