Ken Kutaragi retires
Sony Computer Entertainment chairman and CEO steps down from his posts to pursue other projects and "pass the torch on to the new generation."
By Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK

Ken Kutaragi, the 56-year-old "Father of the PlayStation," will end an era by retiring from his position as Sony Computer Entertainment chairman and CEO at the company's annual shareholders' meeting on June 19.

In a shocking announcement, Sony has revealed that the decision was made so that Kutaragi could "pass the torch on to the next generation," and so that he can "pursue his dreams beyond PlayStation and accelerate his network vision."

Kutaragi commented, "I am happy to graduate from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. after introducing four platforms to the PlayStation family. It has been an exciting experience to change the world of computer entertainment by marrying cutting-edge technologies with creative minds from all over the world. I'm looking forward to building on this vision in my next endeavours."

He will continue to "support" Sony Corporation chairman and CEO Sir Howard Stringer as a senior technology adviser for the company, along with serving as an honorary chairman of SCEI.

However, during a management shake-up in 2005, Kutaragi was demoted from the Board of Directors and replaced as head of the home electronics division. Last year, another Sony reshuffle promoted Kutaragi from SCEI president and group CEO into the position of chairman and group CEO.

While Stringer's latest words were particularly glowing toward Kutaragi upon news of his departure, the Sony CEO didn't always have kind words for him. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Stringer hinted at problems with Kutaragi, calling the Japanese executive "uncommunicative." -Gamespot

Best thing to happen for Sony in years. I think this means there is hope for the PS3 after all.

Fina-fucking-ly. Maybe they'll start making some good changes with that tool out of the picture. People should learn that if you are working with or have someone working for you that is going slowly crazy it is best not to work with them anymore.

I am looking at YOU Steven Spielberg.

EDIT: Holy shit! I just remembered, I made a Thread on how he was going to get SEGA'd. SEGA's headsman was dropped from leading the Console Projects and put into a CEO position before being made to quit.

He's about as close to a complete fuck up as a man can get.

When the PSP first came out, there were two major complaints, the screen, and the unresponsive square button. His reaction to the button was essentially 'we wanted it that way, get used to it'.

"This is the design that we came up with. There may be people that complain about its usability, but that's something which users and game software developers will have to adapt to. I didn't want the PSP's LCD screen to become any smaller than this, nor did I want its machine body to become any larger.

"The button's location is [architectured] on purpose," Kutaragi added. "It's according to specifications. This is something that we've created, and this is our specification. There was a clear purpose to it, and it wasn't a mistake." -Ken Kutaragi

He wanted to push blu-ray with the PS3 and so we got a needlessly expensive console that delivers something almost nobody wants. It's the same mistake they made with the PSP and it's UMD function, only this time it drove the console's price through the roof (not that the PSP was cheap) resulting in a small user base, poor game sales, and a loss of over a billion dollars to Sony. The PS3 is continuing to lag behind, and unless the price is dramatically reduced (about $200 dollars off would be a good start) sales will continue to trail behind the other 'Big Two'. The best bet would be to remove the useless blu-ray player from the thing all together.

He rose to the top, told everyone to kiss his ass, and said "They'll buy it because it has Sony on it" and now he's getting taken down a peg. He's a dickhead, he had it coming.
